I Am Not Esther

I was just thinking about this book the other day! I came across "People Might Hear You" at the library and checked it out for a quick read - I think it and "I Am Not Esther" were the only cult-centred youth lit I read as a kid.

Read it as a teenager. A lot of my friends studied it at school. If I remember correctly, was rather good. Possibly based off the exclusive brethren?

This thread made me look for the book in my local library. They had it! I checked it out and read it in a few hours. It's "Young Adult Fiction" so it reads very quickly. I enjoyed it a lot. I'm in the US, so the religious group made me think of the Amish. Although the Amish at least let you leave in peace if you leave before being baptized.

Possibly based off the exclusive brethren?

I used to be Plymouth Brethren and when googling that to try to explain it to someone I came upon the Exclusive Brethren. Since the book is set in New Zealand I thought of them too while reading the book.

Thanks Inky Girl for bringing it to my attention!
