I have a similar issue.

I am just surprised she didn't think about it earlier

It took me a few months to figure it out, myself, and was after I'd moved out of my parent's house for the first time many years ago. I'd never had to think about what kind of detergent to buy for laundry before, and somehow had difficulty making the mental leap to considering laundry soap, of all things, as something that could cause skin irritation. But four years? That is a LONG TIME to suffer.
