KKK Propaganda in Government-Subsidized Housing

No Cure for Stupid

Recommended Posts

My mother is disabled and, due to this, she lives in a government-subsidized apartment building. This isn't the projects, it's a nice apartment for people with limited resources. As I walked in today, I noticed a flyer posted on the bulletin board with the Stars and Bars on it. I live in the Midwest so it's not an uncommon sight, but then I actually started reading the material on the flyer, and to my shock and disgust, the flyer was trying to recruit people for the Ku Klux Klan.

This is the flyer quoted word for word, all spelling and grammar errors are from the page itself:

The media will tell you the Ku Klux Klan is dead, gone and irrelevant. They have tried since the birth of the Klan to downplay the influence and power of the Klan. They will also try to portray us as haters and ignoramuses. They will ignore the facts. Let me tell you, THEY are the haters! They have engaged in a campaign to destroy our Race, culture and heritage. They are communists, socialists and haters of freedom. They have been poisining our race with their propoganda for the last 140 years plus years. They would deny us our heritage and birthright. They trample our Constitution and Bill of Rights. They want us to be ashamed of our heritage. We cannot allow this!!!

The time has come to awaken from our hypnotic sleep before we and our children wake up to a hell we can never escape from. Our mission is to preserve our White culture and heritage but also to be relevant to the happenings going on in our Republic today. We must defeat these communist, socialist, anti-God, anti-White, anti-American enemies within our own borders. It is essential that we wake up as many of our fellow White citizens as possible and recruit them to our cause. We must set the standards and they will follow our lead. We need mean of courage and character who will not cut and run when the going gets tough. God give us men!

We are traditionalist in that we aim to preserve the traditions passed down to our Klan from the founding in 1865. The principals we have been taught can guide us even in this modern age of confusion. Christ is our criterion of character. His teachings are our rule of life; blood bought, holy, sanctified and sublime.

The anguish-laden cry of the defenseless people of the Southland was heard and answered by the gallant knights of the Invisible Empire and not one faltered or failed as duty pointed the way in the cause of humanity and civilization. Impelled by an instinct of Race, baptized with a suffusion of tears, they came, they saw, they conquered! Once again, we must rise to the occasion. The Spirit of the Ku Klux Klan lives on. Manly men must join in fraternal brotherhood and rise to the occasion the achieve the highest and noblest defense of our Country, our homes, and the White Race.

I am so angry right now, I'm actually shaking. The building is secure and knowing that my mother is living so close to such a piece of shit makes me furious. There has to be something that can be done to stop these assholes.

Bring it to the attention of the building management immediately. It's government subsidized, you can bet your next paycheck they have a fairly low tolerance for hate group flyers. Take a picture to have a document.

So sorry your mom may have a piece of shit for a neighbor, but there is also the possibility that a neighbor's visitor put that up. Not much comfort, but possible.

What Arete Jo said. The building may have a rule against posting political stuff on the bulletin boards too. Our county library (?!) did at one time because the library board had a majority of fun dies. * They didn't want anything supporting gay rights on the boards so they banned everything political.

*My autocorrect won't let me write our usual nickname for fundamentalists.

There are rules against posting political things on the bulletin board, but there are a lot of right-wing jokes and such; mostly, because the majority of people living there are elderly.

She's supposed to talk to the manager in the morning but "doesn't want to cause trouble." It's infuriating, though. There are four floors to the building and someone posted flyers on all but the basement level. I took them all down.

Very fucking worrying. And slightly surreal - the praise of the KKK back in the day doesn't make any sense.

It might be best if your mum just says "I am not happy about any political messages being posted on our notice board". Don't single out anyone, if she's not sure...just say it should be to do with things like cleaning schedules or roadworks, not politics.

Fascists, which is what you are dealing with, are a nasty set of bastards. If you take them on directly, they'll take you on directly as well. Be prepared for this.

Scary. What is scarier is that the rhetoric sounds very like right wing christianity in the US. Just with some added prejudice. Very scary.

Your poor Mum. Hope she is ok.

One thing though. Why the distinction between the 'projects' and where your Mum is? Social housing is social housing why the distinction.

My impression of the KKK from other people dealing with them is that they are often cowardly little shits who talk big about how superior they are but flinch if you so much as sneeze at them. Obviously this may vary by region, but if someone vaguely local weighs in, it may be that it would be perfectly okay to complain and have authorities just say directly "no racist shit."

(edit: and by "okay" I obviously mean "wouldn't provoke backlash", not "morally okay"... just in case I need to clarify that)

The distinction was because it's a nice, small-town neighborhood, not an inner-city project. People's kids play and everyone looks out for one another; that's why I put the distinction in there.

I was just thinking how appropriate that autocorrect is. When you are a fundie, fun dies (especially if you are a Maxwell).

There was a legal case a few hours from here, down in Vidor, TX, where the Klan applied for the "Adopt a Highway" program for a road that just happened to be in front of the Vidor Housing Project, which is predominately filled with African-American families. They wanted to put their name on the sign and everything. This attempt was blocked because the federal courts found it was an attempt to intimidate the people who live there. Just when you think the Klan has gone the way of the do do bird or something, they come back with another foul idea.

I heard about another Klan group that succeeded in getting a sign for the Adopt-a-Highway program. The sign ultimately had to be taken down because people began using that stretch of highway as a dumping ground, which defeated the purpose of the program.

I would tread lightly. And instead of your mother going to management, why don't you? Tell them that you found these notices on the boards, and didn't think they were appropriate. Find out if they were even approved to be put up in the first place. I know that when I was in college, I had a part time job where we'd put up flyers anywhere we could, approved or not. Including walking into apartment complexes and using the boards without permission.

Ah get you. It's a demographic thing then. Good and bad areas everywhere I guess.

We had a problem for a little bit with Klan documents getting left in our customer lobby. They would be removed and then magically reappear. They finally quit appearing after my uncle finally had a company meeting and announced that he would fire the person responsible when, not if, he found out who it was.

This is neither here nor there, but this is the second subculture (in addition to fundies) who are using the word "manly" sincerely. I've NEVER heard anyone in mainstream society use this word anything but sarcastically.
