Modest underwear?

I am a big girl, and I love Lane Bryant bras. I buy them twice a year when they have their buy one/get one sale. It's the only place I know that carries a 40DDD that doesn't ride up in the back on me.

If the others ride up in the back you might want a smaller band... :?

Of course I may be misunderstanding "ride up."

I don't go to VS because I can't stand the sales people. I'm the type who likes to browse by myself but they will just follow you around, wanting to help you, recommending things for you to try, asking if you've shopped there before, etc. I know that's their job, but it makes me head straight for the door and go to Target or Penny's where I can shop in peace.

I also dislike the VS sales people. I buy my VS panties online because I get a better selection, but I have to go into the store whenever I get the coupon for a free panty. Without fail, I get attitude like I only shop when there's a free panty involved.

My great grandmother said that during The War (WW 1) everyone went commando because all the rubber for elastic was used up by 'the war effort'. Her final decision to just go commando full time was after her non-elasticized panties fell down around her ankles while she was walking in Toronto. She picked them up and put them in her purse and decided not to wear undies anymore (at least until elastic was again available).

OMG, this happened to my great Aunt Esther during the same period, except family lore has it that she walked right out of those bloomers and kept walking like nothing had happened and left 'em right there on the street!

When I was a child, I thought this was the funniest thing I had ever heard. I barely remember Aunt Esther, but she was a very dignified woman and a spitfire, all at once.

Actually a wider band works better in the same size.

OT but kind of not: I found a Youtube video on Amish underwear. The channel, from what I can gather is ex-Amish, but it explains some of the Amish customs and the reasons behind them from Former Amish.

I've never really had problems with their salespeople, but I hate the store layouts. I walked in there in the middle of a busy sale once and there were so many mirrors and tables spread around that I got overloaded and I couldn't tell where to walk because everything looked 2D. :( The person I was with had to push me around before the spell broke and I could tell where I was going. :?

I believe the sale ladies are so insistent because they're paid by the sale. At least that would explain a lot, anyway.

I order from figleaves, too. 38G's are rare and stores always tell me, "Are you sure you can't fit a DDD?" Nooooo!

I hate that! I wear 70E/32D (in UK, it would be 32DD I believe), and this combination is rare in the stores here, because most German women believe they need a 75B (34A or B), so I am considered "busty", and old ladies wear D or larger, but with crazy large underbustbands, so that's what the stores stock: Large Cups, large band, small cups, small band.

It is VERY important to have a good fitting underbustband, otherwise, all the support needs to come from the straps, and that gives much strain with a large bust! And ugly marks when taken off. So I get quite mad when salespeople who are supposed to be specialists with lingery suggest the rule: One cup smaller, one bandsize larger fits perfectly! So they offer me 75D all the time, which DOES NOT FIT! (There are exceptions when the bra has a strange sizing, so I try them on, but usually, they do not fit.) I have been fitted, too, but only got recommendations for the style, as I had figured out my size before. My aureolas are very large, so I do not like low-cut cups, because my breasts seem to pop out of them! These days, I usually buy Triumph, do not know if that brand is available overseas. A friend will go to the US this month, and he WILL be equipped with a list for VS! Poor guy, imagine him walking in there! :o

It never ceases to amaze me how many women walk around with badly fitted bras, it gives so much discomfort, but many seem to think that women's underwear is supposed to be uncomfortable. Well, yeah, if you're talking corsetts, perhaps...

I wore granny panties and white bras till I was well into college because of 'modesty.' It was a late night dorm convo that changed my mind....I went out and bought COLORED, still granny, undies! lol.

I really got into the pretty stuff when I worked the lingerie dept at JC Penney....I cleared half the clearence rack myself! I will never go back to packaged, granny undies again!

I'm feeling quite lucky I've got a reasonably easy to find size (34C) even if it does sell out quickly. I find the maidenform t-shirt bras to be quite cheap and comfy (at costco in multi-packs) and they last even in the washer (and then line-dried) for a long while - I bought six before starting university five years ago and still keep a few of them around for when all my others are in the wash (they are falling apart now of course, and they're 34Bs which is too small as I grew a cup size halfway through university - well AFTER starting to grow them at the age of 9 and BEFORE I started on the pill and BEFORE gaining a few (not 15) pounds - I guess I gain weight on my butt and boobs first). I have to say though that VS bras - my sister dragged me into the store for the semi-annual sale - do look better with lower tops, as I have absolutely no cleavage otherwise, and I mean that even VS's unpadded, non-push-up bras can manage to give me a tiny bit, whereas otherwise I need a very padded bra if I want to wear such a top and not just show my sternum. Most of the time, with all bras, however, I find that the band stretches out and then the bra rides up (I start on the tightest notch) and one of my friends who is very very very - ahem - "well-endowed" and has to buy very expensive bras suggested I should maybe get a 32 and start on the loosest notch. Thoughts?

VS panties, though, I find have a rather skinny crotch part that just gets thinner and thinner during the day, but maybe that's my bum stretching it out. As my African American study abroad roommate once told me: "You ain't like those typical white girls with no butt and no hips!" (She followed this with "You gotta embrace what the Lord gave you!" and I was highly amused.) I'm just as happy with a cheap variety of undies, although this thread is also making me want to go buy some sexier undies for a change. Cute and comfy is most of mine, with the odd thong for under-leotard-wearing. Lots of boyshorts which are cute but quite modest at least in amount of fabric, or else panties that I can be sure actually cover my whole bum to avoid pantylines.

I can just imagine my boyfriend's surprise if I actually wore sexy skimpy undies. Hahahahahahaha.

And... lots of misinformation on this page: http://mybelovedsgarden.net/Beginner's-Corner.html

I think this is in the running as one of the worst websites ever. First off--the person can't write a sentence, so it's just this long diatribe about how women are lucky when their husband's have small penises so that it doesn't hit your cervix. wtf....and the products are grossly overpriced. Wow...I guess even if these people never passed a high school English class they found a niche market :-S.

You know, I don't really understand by panty lines are so bad. I mean, I know they're bad if you're fundie, but mainstream fashion advice seems to have conniptions over them--Sure, with a formal, they mess up the line of your dress, but for daily wear, I guess I don't care at all if I see a line. And thongs give you panty lines as well--just in different places. I did stop wearing thongs after I got a lecture about how bad they were from a nurse. Actually her words were "Thongs are for entertainment purposes only! The go directly from your butt to your pee hole." So much for specific names for specific body parts...

I used to wear more exciting unders, but lately I've gone the comfy route. For most days, I just don't care that much, you know? It's more about comfort.

Speaking of undies though, I wish that they made women's boxer briefs, so that you could eliminate chub rub AND have cotton undies with one item of clothing. I've worn pettipants, but they seem too...breezy to be worn alone. That is one advantage I can think of with the Mormon garments--you do have an all-in-one piece.

Has anyone else looked at the lingerie on My Beloved's Garden? LMAO!! Kudos to them for the crotchless panties and (non-ish)exposed nipples!

I really don't get the big deal about pantie lines either. So people can tell you're wearing underwear BFD! Now, a male friend did tell me I should wear thongs to show my assests to best advantage. But I rarely dress for entertainment purposes.

I'm also a bellydancer and this thread reminds me of a story about Madame Abla (a famous costumer) she was out at a show with a couple of American dancers who commented that the dancer on stage was wearing panties that clashed with her costume and were very visible. Mme. replied that she was just letting you know she was a good girls who wore panties! :D

Totally OT: That's soooo great! I've been itching to try bellydance for ages, but the local courses are always full, at least the affordable ones, can't pay 50 Euros a week for personal lessons... but I managed to snatch a place in a beginne's group that starts in september! Yay!

antifundie: Nurses have hangups, too, so I wouldn't get too worked up over her opinion. Perhaps she's confusing thongs with g-strings but my thongs do not move from one orifice to the other all day long, I can assure you. And with quality thongs, just as with quality boy-short type panties, there is NO line. If you don't like them, no problem, but they're unhealthy? Really?

musicalbookworm, I assume that other people assume I wear underwear. I guess I just generally assume that most others wear underwear. So no, it's not a "BFD", but I just don't like panty lines. They break up the line of skirts or trousers and if you don't have a pretty perfect little ass, they make it look even worse. In my opinion.

If you do like panty lines, I'm sure there are some fruit of the looms at K-Mart with your name on them.

Austin, I wasn't too worked up, but I was taken aback--It was just not what I was expecting to hear you know? Also, I was calling about a UTI, so maybe she was trying to cover all possible bases, I don't know. I did stop wearing them and the UTIs got better, but now that I think about it, the undies I wore at the time weren't cotton, so maybe that had something to do with it? In any case, I think it's something personal, and I don't get upset either way. I don't really think about what others wear, you know? I just get annoyed with the women's magazine type "OMG!! PANTY LINES!"--whatever floats your boat, you know?

'Course, I also really really hate heels, but love expensive handbags, so to each her own. :)

I must confess, when I was very young (8 or so) I looked quite askance at naughty exotic underwear like thongs or string panties (I particularly remember a pair of double-string panties). But once I got old enough to dress myself I had no problems with it (not that I wore them myself). It's UNDERWEAR. Nobody SEES it.

I used to have this problem all the time and I think it just turned out that I'm actually in between band sizes. So you know how the number indicates the circumference of the rib cage? Mine is 33, and I used to buy 34Ds to accommodate that but the bands ended up being too loose very quickly. My sister in law, after getting a fitting at a very exclusive lingerie boutique, advised me to go to 32 and start on the loosest notch so I tried it. It worked wonderfully and now my bras last so much longer before getting stretched out! And once I faced reality and accepted being DD the bras I get fit so much better and last a lot longer than they did before. 32DD is a bitch of a size to find but when I find good ones they make me really happy! I do mostly get my bras online because my size isn't usually available in stores and a lot of online places have free return policies. I love Bare Necessities because they have a huge selection.

Hmm that could very well be. My rib cage is 29 inches, so then my band size comes up as 33 if I have the rule right. Cup sizes are so different for 32s though, and not just in the "go up one size" rule (I assure you I'm definitely not a D, so that wouldn't work anyhow) but also in shape - my boobs are pretty far apart and the base or diameter or whatever is pretty wide even though they don't stick out all that far, if that makes any sense, so that's another problem I have with trying to find a suitable 32. And every time I calculate my measurements I get 34C, very rarely 34B, depending on a myriad of factors of when I measure. They're comfy, just they wear out when the band stretches. But I've always had trouble finding any type of clothing, including shoes/boots, that fit quite right, despite being technically average sizes. My family figures I'm just weird ;p

I have a friend who's a 32DD, I've heard about the difficulty in shopping! Sounds miserable.

The best thing I ever did was go to a speciality bra store and get fitted properly for a bra. Now I have hideously expensive but ever so comfortable bras that make me look much better. As for underwear I am a cotton + lycra boy short person. My husband used to buy me expensive but uncomfortable lingerie because he thought it looked good - until I pointed out I was much more likely to be "in the mood" if I was comfortable. Now that he sees the direct benefits of keeping his wife comfortable he has become a strong supporter of the comfortable, well fitted, cotton lingerie brigade. Win-Win!

also: I'm a 32 DD too - it is hard to find that size - do what I did - go to a good store and stock up
