Maybe God is telling you to use real toothpaste....

not sure whether this blog has been discussed, but she's a nutty nature type (unassisted home-births, no vaccines, etc etc). This post cracks me up and also makes me sad, because it sounds like her kids' teeth are rotting out and she still refuses to just BRUSH them with normal toothpaste.

Can you please fix the link? I can't click it, because of the DOT, and I can't copy & paste it because it's shortened. Sorry to be a pain.

CPennylane, if you're a microsoft/chrome user you can right click the link and select "copy address". It will paste the whole thing in the browser bar and you can take out the 'dot' from there. :-)

Breastfed three kids at a time? OMG. She must have been ravenous all the time!

I think I fixed the link.

I can't completely hold this against her. The main benefit of brushing your teeth comes not from the toothpaste (think of that as the icing on the dental health cake) but from the action of the toothbrush itself.

I have heard that about antibiotics, although I have no idea if it's actually true.

I can't find the toothpaste blog posting. But I looked through some of this woman's blog and she is a bit wacky especially when it comes to not vaccinating. I also cringed when she a" vote for me" button for topmomblogs or whatever.

Antibiotics cause tooth decay?

Whaaaaaaaaaat!?

First the blog seems to be protected... I can't access it anyway.

Secondly, my dentist told me that antibiotics in pregnant mothers can cause issues with their children's teeth in the long run. My mom was on 2 rounds of antibiotics while preggo with me and my teeth have loads of cavities, not due to lack of oral hygiene but weak enamel (I think that's what he called it). He asked me if she was on any antibiotics when pregnant and when said yes, he said that could be PART of the problem. My whole family has strong teeth with the exception of one grandmother who has falsies.

Did she close it? I can't get in. I get prompted for a Blogger/Google account name/password. Once I got through that, I received a message that the blog is by invitation only.

If she did, that was freaking fast. I was on it just 30 minutes ago.

Antibiotics can cause damage to teeth. But, only when used for extended periods of time. Just like if you let sugar build up on your teeth without brushing, antibiotics can build up. Mostly, the people who have experienced issues with antibiotic induced decay are those with other life threatening issues that require them to be on antibiotics on a regular basis.

I only know that because one of my best friends had a heart/lung transplant. She didn't reject but she spent about three years post-transplant with a multitude of infections (ten years later, she is alive and kicking and doing well). She was on antibiotics for several years almost constantly. Her teeth were badly affected.

Antibiotics used to treat one infection or another over any number of years isn't going to do anything to your teeth.

Anyway. Whatever your personal preference, if it ain't working, try something else. If 'natural' tooth-brushing results in one kid having 10 cavities, try commercial toothpaste. It ain't that hard. If you're so willing to give up 'modern' products because of evidence you trust, why can't you trust that the same things don't always work for everyone?

Breastfeeding three kids at the same time is insane. Did any of them get enough nourishment? How much time and energy did she put into juggling them instead of simply caring for and loving them? Two kids, ok. Fine. But three? To me that says 'cause' far more than kid's best interest.

Earlier the blog was open but I couldn't find the toothpaste posting. But the blog was still up. I guess she got tipped off by someone who lurks here.

The same URL I used half an hour ago (grabbed it from my history) now displays the blog as closed. Which doesn't bother me in the least (although I always do copy and paste the link because I know others view it as a bad thing when they close up and I don't want to lead anyone here).

I don't really have a problem with her choice to make her own toothpaste. I wouldn't do it because I do not believe that flouride in toothpaste is a problem, and so to me, it would be a stupid waste of effort. But if she does, whatever. People used to use baking soda paste quite commonly. My grandmother grew up using it as toothpaste.

What I do have a problem with is the typical fundie belief that correlation equals causation, always, in every situation. But I guess they're not alone in that.

Grr....looks like she's cleaned house.

Yep...took down a LOT. I just don't get these people - obviously she knew many of her posts were controversial - so either don't post that type of stuff or stand behind it once you do!

They always seem so surprised when people comment on their nutty beliefs.

If a pregnant mother was prescribed tetracycline, the child's teeth could become stained, also some medications used while the crowns of teeth are forming before a child is 6 could cause staining. The main thing here is education. If you are under the care of an informed health professional, all of this can most likely be avoided. I don't see anything wrong with using baking soda, as the action of the brush will remove plaque and debris. However, fluoride is so key to healthy teeth and baking soda doesn't have fluoride. Regular brushing, regular check-ups, a good diet are all key. Baking soda alone isn't ruining their teeth.

That's true. It's not one thing or one product that does the job or the damage. A combination of factors affect all dental health, including genetics.

For the record, it was nothing taken while she was pregnant. The child took antibiotics for strep throat (which mom regrets), which apparently messed up his oral flora and caused the tooth decay. That's her theory.

They're nursing pads she's talking about - no deadliness involved. She is gung ho for them!
