Wasnt the book supposed to come out in November? I wonder why it was pushed to March...

I suppose it would be too much to ask that there was an engagement and they need to add a chapter on how it works perfectly.

I assume they have to change something offensive or something they found out people react negatively to.

Anyone who thinks the Duggars and Bateses aren't controlling is an idiot of the highest kind. Those women will never get married, because their parents won't let them get married. If any of them wanted to court someone that their father didn't approve of, she would be given an ultimatum and would have to leave completely if she wanted to pursue it. And if JB somehow changed his mind and decided that one of them did need to get married, you better believe they would have no choice in it. Refusing to marry someone that God and Daddy hand-picked for you would also mean being shunned from the family.

Another issue is that if a Duggar refused to marry the person God and Daddy picked and were shunned, they wouldn't be able to function in the outside world because the SOTDRT didn't prepare them for anything other than being a servant to Daddy or a husband.

That's exactly the entire point of their lifestyle. They set it up so the children are forced to obey because leaving is just not a manageable option for them. It's abusive at best. There's a reason many of us consider it a cult. When the choice is either obey Daddy or risk homeless destitution, it's not really a choice at all.

The level of control is what just breaks my heart for these kids. I was raised in the same type of environment- I guess it was fundie-lite as far as going to public school and being allowed to be in school choir, etc. but we were completely controlled. Our every moment was watched and I was never allowed to go anywhere without a parent or other relative.

My parents did not have as many kids, but being one of the oldest female cousins- I was constantly being sent to help an aunt or someone else with their little ones.

And the whole bit about never really owning anything yourself, where everything is communal just gives me nightmare flashbacks. It's disgusting but hilarious when I look back on it now, but I remember getting in a lot of trouble for being caught with a contraband stick of deodorant when I was in high school. I was expected to share deodorant with my two sisters but I bought a stick of my own and then someone found it in my backpack. You would have thought I was caught with crack cocaine. I guess I was just a selfish teenager for wanting my own stick of Teen Spirit.....

Thank goodness I was able to escape off to college! It was extremely hard- I still had very young siblings at home, but I have never regretted it.

Teen Spirit- contraband? Now I've heard it all. That is seriously disgusting that your parents made you all use the same stick. It would have ultimately cost the exact same amount to just buy three separate sticks (deodorant still gets used at same rate when used by the same # of people), and it would have been far more hygienic.

At the time I didn't understand at all, I really did feel selfish for wanting my own things. But now I know it was not about keeping me from being selfish and vain or about a hairbrush or deodorant- it was about control and making us obedient in every way. A lot of people wonder why these kids don't just blow out of there once they turn 18, but many do not have the skills to do that. Leaving a fundie family is one step above leaving the Amish- these kids are so sheltered and are raised to believe that the world will chew them up and spit them out.

If I had been kept a prisoner and homeschooled, I would have been screwed. Luckily I had several teachers who saw how desperate I was to get out and one let me use her school mailbox address for applying for scholarships. My family fought so hard to get to me to stay home from school- they didn't even know I had a full scholarship to a state university until 2 weeks before I was leaving.

Please tell!

So some of these Christian homeschoolers know how to get around firewalls and learn passwords. Hmm.... As to the part about who may or may not be gay, it is awful to make speculations about another person's sexuality (especially if that person is a minor), I lived through that myself (from the time I was 11 and at the time I didn't know what a lesbian even was FFS) and it was awful.
