Duggars, Boys and Romance Novels

There's a new video by TLC with the Duggar girls talking about relationships with boys blah blah and how bad romance novels are. In A love that Multiplies Michelle says romance novels are porn for women. And why do they refer to them as boys when talking of the older Duggar daughters? It is funny reading comments defending how the girls are lucky to have 'protection'. Anyway Lather rinse and repeat. We have heard this talk before.

"See if there are any courtships *wink wink* under way in the Duggar family"

Courtships my ass. They use that line every time to lure me into watching the video, and it's always the same "stay pure" rubbish. Ah well.

. In A love that Multiplies Michelle says romance novels are porn for women. .

And what exactly is wrong with that? Women enjoy titillation too.

What does she define as romance novel anyway? Some Harlequin rag that actually contains sex? Do they refer to any fictional story about two people in a romantic relationship? What about Jane Austen novels? They deal with romantic relations. Does it have to be about sex to be immoral and pornographic, or is kissing bad enough (Thus making "Jane Eyre" or LIW's "These Happy Golden Years" porn?)

...or maybe those Cherry Ames, Student Nurse novels from the '50s my mom kept trying to defraud me with when I was younger.

oh wait, scratch that. Cherry Ames worked outside the home. Can't have that!

:wanker: Porn for women is just called porn, Michelle. Not to downplay the enormous issues the industry has, but lots of women willingly and happily produce, star in, and watch porn. Michelle would fall right out of her seat if she were aware of the depths of depravity she could be partaking in.

:romance-threesome: :nanner-sex: :teasing-whipyellow: :character-koolaid: OH YEAH!

...

I certainly learned a lot of defrauding information reading the Earth's Children series by Jean M. Auel. That would be SO off limits. Ayla and Jondalar have sex every three chapters at one point, Ayla is the most awesome woman who ever lived and invents everything, and even though it takes place in the Stone Age there isn't a dinosaur in sight.

Why would anybody ask a Duggar lady for advice on men? They've never had a boyfriend or suitors.

Poor girls :( Theyve never been allowed to have any experiences with dating and relationships, and maybe they never will :(

I also feel bad that theyve been taught that their natural urges are bad and wrong.

My advice for fundie girls:

There is nothing wrong with reading romance novels, books about sex, fanfiction about sex, anything like that.

There is nothing wrong with watching porn.

The majority of people in the world have sexual urges which are completely natural and its not wrong to have them.

There is nothing wrong with masturbating

Dating isnt wrong, its how your parents met, and theyre still together after all these years and all these children.

Your dad does not own your body, your body belongs to you, and always will, even after you get married or are in a relationship.

Its up to you to choose who you want to get married to, cause youre the one who is going to have to live with them.

If you want to be in a relationship with someone, you do not have to be submissive to them. If the man (or woman, thats fine too) you are with bosses you around and expects you to be submissive to them and do whatever they say, you should break up. Relationships are a partnership.

Nobody knows whether you are a virgin or not. It doesnt make you dirty to lose your virginity, and dont listen to what your parents tell you about virginity, most people arent too bothered if their partner isnt a virgin.

Nothing wrong with using protection when you have sex, if you do not want a baby with someone. Having 20 kids isnt for everyone, and its nothing to be ashamed of if you dont feel youre cut out for large family motherhood.

I would like to add: Please go to school and learn a skill or trade. You never know what kind of curve ball life will throw at you. Someday, you may be glad you're educated enough to get a decent job. If you truly believe that leaning on the government for survival is wrong, then you'd better start planning now for any potential monetary crisis that could happen in the future.

When I was about 11-12, I was obsessed with romance novels. This was pre-Internet, so those pictures inside the front cover of romance novels (big Fabio-looking guy, shirtless, and a disheveled heroine looking like she's about to orgasm or vomit, or possibly both) were hugely titillating for my friends and I.

I remember a girl who was convinced that reading these was bad grabbing a novel from me during recess and showing it to our teacher. I was mortified, because I had been trying to keep my reading them secret. The teacher, bless her, looked at the novel, smiled, and said, "Read, but don't do" and handed it back to me. :)

I wonder how many of these romance novels Michelle had to read before deciding they were bad for her daughters. And does she keep up with the latest in the genre to make sure they are still bad?

Yes, thats really important as well :)

They cant have had a good education with them caring for siblings since they were 10, travelling around almost constantly and the ATI curriculum is crap. I know Jill at least has some ambitions for the future, and Jana is dragged along with her, but I do think that Jessa and Jinger should also be doing something to train for a real job. Theyve proven theyre capable enough to work in a coffee shop or do something else like that, but they need to be able to do something that pays better, especially as theyre the ones I cant see being interested in being a SAHM.

Their parents have really let them down.

it is all about preventing the very thought about touching one self. these books will get young woman all riled up. even though woman don't get riled up according to fundies. I mean I bet they have to shower with a with a shower mitt to prevent touching.

I wonder what they do with showers/baths because it is the best opportunity for masturbation. Having a buddy in their with them is too defrauding, and the idea of having a parent watch is incredibly wrong and perverted. Maybe 2 minute cold showers?

What I find interesting is there is a whole genera of Christian Romance novels. No sex in them. Just people trying to find the partner god has intended for them. Many of them deal with such subjects as learning to love again (in a godly way) after having your heart broken, redemption, building families, finding true love. Yes, very defrauding subjects there.

The Duggar women (I refuse to call them girls) have no idea what a "romance novel" even is. Heck, I'm not even sure what qualifies as one as they aren't something that would ever have appealed to me. So it's more than a little disingenuous for them to be blathering about how bad they are to a group of teens. I would have loved for one of the girls to raise her hand and say, "Can you give a few examples of the types of books you are talking about so we know what to avoid?" Four deer in the headlights. And next question, “What’s on your reading list these days, Jana?â€

The Duggar women wouldn’t even be allowed to read Webster’s dictionary. It has the word “penis†in it!

i'm sure that when they say "romance novels" they're talking about the christian genre ones. the only duggar woman picking up harlequin romance novels are grandma duggar or cousin amy (although i honestly can't imagine amy reading).

I agree with you. It was a joke when the Duggar girls did a speaking segment on a Christian conference last year about relationships. I remember audio clips were on some sight and they were awful public speakers.

I wouldn't be a bit surprised if Amy has snuck a few romance novels to the J'slaves.
