Speaking of fat shaming

A sports blogger (female) commented on how one NBA (OKC) Cheerleader was too pudgy for the skimpy cheer outfit. Said blogger caught a rasher of shit for this. I, personally, wish I were that pudgy.

Actually, when I was that pudgy, my mother began really getting on my about my weight. Thanks mom....

And here an article related to it.

She looks a little thicker than other cheerleaders, but if she's happy, who cares?

My thought is, she likely has weight standards they require of her to stay on the squad. She may or may not have been warned, if she is gaining. Some careers have strict rules. It is interesting to see comments on various sites.

I didn't even think of a weight requirement, but that makes sense. Much like how you have to be thin to be a runway model, and agencies will drop models if they gain weight and don't comply. I watched Girl Model and two of the models living in Japan were purposely gaining weight to get out of their contracts because they hated it.

It seems to me that today's perfect woman is an anorexic with boob implants.

If she's pudgy, then I'm as big as an elephant. She's thin and she looks healthy. She's curvy (not sickly stick thin)- damn, I wish I looked like her.

From the blog:

“This pretty blonde has been criticized by some folks in OKC for having “pudginess†around her waistline. We’re not trying to be ugly. We are just discussing what men like in women, specifically NBA cheerleaders.â€

And why exactly is this female blogger all concerned about what "men like in women"? This shit makes me crazy. You don't see men doing this sort of crap to each other.

I don't get the problem her body is arched to the side it's gonna look like that. Everybody is obsessed with having a thigh gap because if your thighs touch apparently your a wilderbeast it's sick/

I'm pretty sure men would like this woman just fine. She has a pretty face and long blonde hair. She's a cheerleader. I really doubt she lacks male attention.

And it is incredibly annoying and wearying that every detail of women's bodies is picked apart.

She looks fine, and I would think it would be the business of nobody but the cheerleaders' choreographer and director, and I suppose the team management, whether or not she was adequately fulfilling her duties as a cheerleader. Jesus wept, aren't sports blogs supposed to be about sports?

She looks to be a normal, healthy weight to me. I hate that the new "healthy" has bones showing. I don't think that is healthy at all. Plus, she is a cheerleader, I would bet they have weight requirements because there is lifting required usually and if you are too heavy, you aren't going to be getting off the ground. If she is still on the team, she is obviously within the requirements, so she's fine.

It depends. I am 5'7-5'8" and 140 lbs, but my ribs stick out and I'm pretty bony looking in general. I have hypermobility syndrome/Ehlers Danlos Syndrome and most people with EDS have Marfan-esque bodies for some reason.

If you have to starve yourself in order for bones to show, then no, it's not healthy.

She looks good. I hope she doesn't let this get to her. I'm very fat and would love to be "pudgy" instead. :)

Not only is she not "pudgy", but it takes a hell of lot of confidence to put on that outfit and perform in front of that many people. You know what doesn't take as much confidence? Blogging about a person's weight, putting up a poll about a person's weight and saying things like "If she's comfortable wearing that tiny outfit and dancing for NBA fans, then good for her.", which, to me. comes off as kind of a bitchy, mean girl insult disguised as a compliment type thing.

Claire Crawford (the blogger) should turn off her computer and get out there and do what that cheerleader does, or STFU.

Hurrumph!

She's fine. People need to leave her alone.

We can't say "oh, we should have many body types!" out of one side of our mouth and then criticize a woman who is doing fine out of the other.

She's obviously able to do all the "stuff" for her job, so people need to fuck off.

I think she is parroting things she has heard our culture say about women's bodies.

I suspect it's extra noteworthy for a woman to criticize another woman's body, eye roll like it's some proof that all women are jealous bitches or something stupid.

I asked my husband if this woman was overweight, and showed him a picture. His response?

"Huh?"

She's a seriously good looking woman, with a nice body. Both of us are quite confused.

During this same conversation, my husband brought up an interesting point. His thoughts were that sometimes women are a lot harsher on other women's physique than men were. He thought it was interesting that so many women insist that men love super-thin women. If you look in women's magazines, the models are all very thin. But if you look in men's magazines or even porn, the women look more like this cheerleader with full busts, hips, thighs etc. Which seems to be true from the men's mags I've seen on the news stands.

This cheerleader is still slender and glamorous, but she isn't rail-thin. I don't know many men who WOULDN'T find her attractive. This is an idea that the blogger came up with on her own.

That's not to say there aren't gorgeous super-skinny women. There certainly are, and beauty is so subjective anyway. I'm sure there are plenty of people who prefer very thin women. However, it would be interesting (albeit dehumanizing IMO) to ask men who is more attractive to them. A high fashion runway model, or this woman? Because I think I know how the majority of men would vote....

Cheerleading squads have weight limits because of doing lifts.

However, why are we conflating slim with good-looking? I am obese and hella hot (just for example :D).
