Liberals are responsible for the uglification of women

I think a quick review of any media will tell her that women are now held up to impossibly unrealistic versions of air-brushed, teeth veneered, anorexic beauty on a 24/7 basis.

Seriously look at any tv show or movie from even 20 years ago and you see lots of average looking people, now the only time people look "average' is if they are being portrayed as fat, ugly, poor or otherwise undesirable.

I agree. I do think that it's not so much older media vs. new, but more of a cyclical thing, and sometimes, it depends on the subject and tone of the production. I know US film and TV better than other sources -- here's what I see.

In the silent era and the the 30s, American film was pretty strictly all-glamor, and very high glamor, if we were supposed to care about the characters. Only comics and villians could look average. Oh, and pitiful, poor women were gorgeous, just not as made up. :D

Some combination of WWII, powerhouses of skill that weren't Hollywood-pretty or were willing to look unattractive for the character (Humphrey Bogart, Bette Davis, etc.), and interest in serious subjects made it OK to look average for serious drama, noir, war, and social-relevance for a while. So the 40s-early 60s were a mix -- beauty and glamor were still a must in musicals, spy films and romance.

Even in romance, there were exceptions for men who didn't have a pretty face -- Fred Astaire and Jimmy Stewart, as they aged and aged and still got the girl, for example -- but never for women. Some women in stand-up comedy, who also did some film and TV, had a comedic image of mocking their own looks (Phyllis Diller, Totie Fields).

Hollywood's attempt at the "hippie look" was bizarre (lots of neatly-styled long hair), but, at least, through the late 60s and most strongly in the 70s, the casting of average-looking people we were meant to care about was probably at its strongest.

High-glam came back with a vengeance after that, and has tended to rule. Men could look average (Tom Hanks) but women had to be at least "cute" (Meg Ryan).

I have hope that varied-looking people in US media, who are not cast as pitiful or evil characters, will return, but they will probably also fade again. :(

Here's a picture of liberal feminist Ashely Judd. Oy, what a dog:

Ashley, not Ashely. Oy, what a riffle.

And why are conservatives so obsessed with how women look? Maybe it's because the only thing today's conservative women bring to the table is a so-called attractiveness. Ann Coulter, Sarah Palin, Michelle Malkin, Michele Bachmann, SE Cupp, Dana Loesch may be aesthetically pleasing to the eye but they certainly don't contribute anything positive to society.

Is this the same Sunshine Mary that is a member here, posted some stupid things about how women are too emotional to make decisions and then flounced when challenged?

Yep. She was trying to defend a post on her blog about why the women's suffrage movement is partly responsible for the decline of American society. Essentially, we women vote for candidates based on their looks and our emotions this making bad decisions. She believes we'd be better off leaving the voting to our husbands, fathers and sons.

Because you know, looks are everything.

I know very attractive liberal women and women who are conservative and wouldn't be considered conventionally attractive. Beauty is in the eye of a beholder.

*I don't consider myself a very attractive woman...but somehow I was able to find a husband who I have been married happily to for several years now. How does she explain that?*

Presumably her hypothesis applies only to liberal women, not men. Otherwise, how to explain liberal econommist Paul Krugman or VP Joe Biden vs, say, Glenn Beck, Paul Ryan, who always looks like he's hiding a mouthful of rotten teeth. Even being a gazillionaire and thus able to afford expensive haircuts and skin treatments and fitness trainers couldn't wipe the mean off Mitt Romney's face.

This makes me sad. I want to get a job after college and be able to support myself, but what are the issues? Ah yes, whose women are hotter.

“How Ugly is the Person With the Liberal Bumper Sticker?â€

If you don’t believe me try playing the game yourself. Any time you see a car with a leftist bumper sticker catch up to it and peer inside to see how “attractive†the occupant is.

You’ll note two things:

1. They are usually pretty ugly, certainly homely.

2. They are never smiling.

The reason why leftists tend to be uglier is the same reason they are leftists – a deep-seeded fear and hatred of effort and competition.

First, who pissed in your Cheerios?

Second, no one owes you a smile.

Third, out fo the liberals I've known not too many had a deep fear and hatrid of effort and competition. At least no more than an average group of people do.

To be physically attractive, just like a career or anything else worth doing in life, takes effort. You need to work out, you need to run, you need to eat right, you need to dress right, and above all else, you need to have self-control and discipline.

Eating right and getting exercise is a part of just being healthy. It doesn't matter what side you're on.

You may not like the maintenance required in having long hair, but you’re not having long hair for you, you’re having long hair for him.

No, my hair is for me.

It is here, however, where you can extract your revenge.

How about not being an asshole? Or does that require too much effort?

Sweatpants and pajama bottoms in public? Come on. And quit with the army pants and punked-out, black slut-wear. Put on a dress. Dresses and skirts look better than pants on most women; if you are a few pounds (or more) overweight, pants are the worst thing you can wear, as they draw attention to your thighs, hips, and tummy, areas which are gracefully covered by a dress or skirt. Wear hosiery unless it’s the middle of summer.

I hate wearing panty hose. Haven't worn them in years. Besides, I can traumatize people with my lily white legs....

Dressing well, regardless of a person's size, can draw the eye away from "problem" areas.

Wear a little make up. Every day. You don’t need to cake on black eyeliner and red lipstick, but a light application of make up in neutral colors will make you look fresh, pretty, and put-together.

Women aren't obligated to wear make up. I know a lot that don't and they look fine and well put together. A lot of it is how you carry yourself.

Please stop with the excessive tattooing and all facial piercing.

The body is your temple and if you feel like remodeling or decorating...

Ladies, resist the feministic uglification of your looks, your attitude, and your behavior.

 There's plenty of lovely women who are feminists.

I have become more attractive as a woman the more feminist ideals I have embraced. Same goes for my divorced ex-church friends. Somehow even though they're getting older, they're in way better shape and are way more in tune with their bodies and what looks good on their bodies now that they're not wallowing in the depression of being ignored by their fat, couch-bound, insecure, right-wing husbands. Also, they smile a ton, because they're actually happy now that they're living in sin with men who treat them honorably.

I personally believe I have great sex, certainly way better than when I was married to a republication douchebag. The fact that I am physically attracted to my very left-wing boyfriend helps, of course, but more important is that he is totally willing to tune into me and watch for cues in my breathing, and enjoy me for a long time, "falling in love with the moles on your skin over and over" as he told me recently. Sex with him has been very healing and very passionate, depending on our moods, and it has gotten better and better over time. Yes, we take care of ourselves physically, but I'll be honest: I've been with better-looking men and none of them even came close as lovers. His fearlessness and security in his own masculinity directly influence how good he is in bed, as do my fearlessness and security in myself regardless of how I match up to anybody's "ideal" woman. We exist in that realm together, separate from what anyone thinks or how anyone judges us, and we meld with intense focus and sublime relaxation.

Tantric sex is not a right-wing thing. I know very few right-wingers who talk about how amazing their sex lives are, as opposed to my left-wing friends who get it on twice a day just because they can. Somehow it seems like it's the right-wingers who keep yammering on about how women are supposed to put out, look good, and all that bullshit. It's like the leftists are too busy having good sex to write blog posts about such silliness.

Well if you go around glaring at others with the right wing Face of hate and judgement maybe they would smile more around you.

I've recently lost 11kg (24 ish pounds). I love dresses and hose. I'm growing my hair out. I am a feminist, as is my fiancé.

Shorter Captain Capitalism: "To me, women are just bodies. Also, all women everywhere should be just exactly the bodies I want, or stay home all day where I don't have to look at them. Women who don't care whether I look at them or not make me mad. How dare they exist in public!"

Shorter Sunshine Mary: "Women who don't perform femininity correctly are deliberately kicking a hole in my nice safe comfortable assumptions. STOP DOING THAT RIGHT NOW!"

My partner is overweight and not a looker. However, there are other things except looks that can be attractive. (Shouldn't "Christians" know this?) I guess all the mind-blowing sex we've been having all these years is imaginary.

So then wouldn't women be voting for all the men on the right? Or Does being liberal only make women unattractive??

If so, why would I, as a heterosexual woman, care about my liberalism corrupting my looks? It seems to me like there are quite a lot of smokin' hot liberal men, and not so many attractive conservative men. Surely it's to my advantage to stay on Team Bleeding Hearts?

(Note: I am sure there are as many ostensibly attractive conservative men as liberal men. I would be hard pressed to name any, but that's probably because I am an evil socialist and find other socialists more appealing than right-wingers. It's almost like personality is a factor in attraction. Who would have thought?)

I'm just always impressed, as a Liberal, how much power I supposedly have. You know, to accomplish all these 'horrible' things. I'm also always quite amused by it too.

Interesting aside, I've noticed that when I get hit on by men within 10 years of my age (before they know I am married), 99% of them are Conservative. Either I don't get hit on by liberal men, they know better than to hit on a married woman, or they are all married. (Honestly, I don't know any single liberal men around my age, so I'm going with that.)

This is one of the dumbest "arguments" conservatives make up against feminism. I know many conventionally beautiful feminists in real life, so it only goes to prove how out of touch Sunshine Mary is.

Oh, read her old blog archives, young women shouldn't go to college, just get married and that's all.

This sunshine mary blog...it boggles the mind, anyway. She has a long article on how not looking at your husband when he is speaking to you means you do not respect his authority and show your contempt for him.

Well, I have been taught that it is impolite not to look in somebody's eyes when you talk to them/they talk to you. It has nothing whatsoever to do with God, sex, religion or the God-given role of women as doormats to men. Why do these people always, always have to make everything into a question of rightfulness and women's submissiveness? :angry-banghead:

But I thought women were to keep their eyes cast demurely towards the floor at all times! If we start looking men in the eyes we might start to feel like we're worth something and then feminism will errupt.

Oops.

Do you think we should point out the inconsistency to her or might it just make her head explode?
