"Character Books"

I went wandering around the Bates' website tonight, and found [link=http://www.advancepublishing.com/store/asts.html]these[/link] wondrous character lesson books by Carl Sommer. Let's read together.

"It's Not Fair!" teaches important lessons about rising above your station. Buzzie Bee realises she's oppressed and that's utter bullshit, and learns a powerful lesson...

"I can clean the ceiling fans whenever I want! I can wear whichever fluro orange frumper I want! I can live a day without raising my younger siblings, and no one can stop me!"

If you are having problems with little hellions refusing to homeschool the rest, then Advance Publishing's Character Books have you covered with complementary activity lesson worksheets!

Jeezus. There's too much WTF there to even formulate a comment on. Especially the locked-up black kid while the white kids are successful. Seriously, that shit made me feel physically ill.

This. It was all bad enough to make me cringe, but when I got to the black kid behind bars, my jaw dropped. I just... I can't...I mean, what the ever-living fuck? :?

Ditto. It was beyond bad.

Also, I don't know about you, but all that "we must follow our Leader" stuff just brought up images of Kim Jong Il (North Korea's late "Dear Leader") and Hitler.

And seriously, the ass is named Stiffy?

If I didn't know better, I'd think these people are just trolling us. It's like they've discovered the greatest drug ever, they sit back and get high and crank out this shit and just laugh themselves to death watching us freak out about it. And they never share.

It's just too much.

I thought exactly the same thing. I've been reading about North Korea recently and this is exactly what they teach their children

Not to defend what is bad in general, but the rascist book does have Pictures of one black man as a physician on the same double page as his black brother in jail. The books (and the writings) are still horrible, but the pictures don't portray the white guys as successful and the one black guy as in prison.... just sayin.

Oh, I have a fetish for children's books with beautiful illustrations, but these pictures are just so bland and the colors are so uninspired. I don't see any kid liking this, very much.

Wow, that's...just...um...both hilarious and wildly offensive at the same time. It's like a Chick tract on steroids :? And yet they still have a better storyline than the Moody books.

Uhm....WOW...just....WOW

Can't say Im surprised.....appalled yes..... but ignorance is handed down unfortunately. I don't see these children having much opportunity to overcome it in the future.

yes, I think the only kids who'd find these appealing are those who've never seen anything else, presumably not even a better made Christian book.

Kids can have strange preferences when it comes to books. Anybody who has seen a kid repeatedly pass up classic gems (not naming any, because parents and teachers can be vehement on the subject as well!) for yet another reread of Barbie Nutcracker can sympathize! There just is no predicting what will appeal to any young kid. Many of them love certain books with uninspired pictures and tedious writing.

Which is even more reason not to let real garbage into your house. If your kid is going to fall in love with a book and demand you read it three times a day for a year, it should be something that a. won't drive you too insane and b. isn't giving them messed up values. (Huh, I guess I agree with fundies on something. I wouldn't censor reading of kid books for somebody who can read to herself, but damn if I refuse to participate in it. It's just that my shelves are more "tango makes three" and less "why your grandma is going to hell".)

One of my favorite picture books was No Measles, No Mumps For Me - about the MMR vaccine.

These are so bad they're just funny. Especially the donkey one. SURELY they must have thought before publishing that.

The one with the donkeys... Now we know where the Bateses get their animal care tips.

These character books pretty much spell everything out for you. No freedom, no individualism and 100% guaranteed safety if you obey! Unless you die in childbirth or choke on a tater tot...

I'd like to read more of these, just for the lulz. "Stiffy" -

So, working with a leader brings happiness, but OH NOEZ! OBAMA IS TEH COMMUNIZMS!

I . . . wut?

Well, of course we are supposed to follow a leader! Who will tell us what to think? But the leader is supposed to be white! Like Jesus. Black people are supposed to be in jail, not the white house! It's the white house, not the black house! (Im obviously being sarcastic, but I have heard these very things from a few family members, and I can't fathom the level of ignorance...)

Wow! Someone with worse relatives than mine. Sincere condolences.

And... shouldn't Stiffy be doing the groaning?

Not really that surprising since aren't they the same people who have a picture of Nathan Bedford Forrest one of the founders of the KKK hanging on the wall. I doubt the character books are the worst things these kids read history lessons at that particular SOTDRT would probably be a traumatic experience for most of us.
