I need your help! "Kingdom Coming"

Oh brilliant and learned snarkers.

Based on a mention here, I read Kingdom Coming. Which reinforced some things I'd been observing, but is a little old. Two things happened as a result, so far.

1) It reinforced my paranoia / fears of what is happening around me.

2) When I showed the book to my most liberal inlaw and her husband, he said "Well of course, look at the authors name, it was written by a Jew." And my most liberal inlaw piped in and said "yeah, has to be." Which basically killed the conversation, as far as they were concerned. I had no idea tht being a jew was an issue for them (and I've known them and been around them constantly for 30 years) AND the biggest irony is that my husband's family name is "jewish sounding" ie, I have been asked if I was Jewish dozens of times since my marriage (until I went back to using my maiden name, for unrelated reasons) and other people just assume. I had a woman say to me at a Dem political cocktail party once that "Your people have done so much for our party." (WTF? PLump blonde lapsed Methodists??? What do you mean "my people")

So, it was a voyage into surreal land and killed the discussion of the book. My husband and I were dumbfounded and I have given up on them. I thnk they are too far down the rabbit hole. SO far, he's drinking the koolaid without having yet joined a church, but we'll see how long it takes before we learn they have gone full fundie--which will be a shocker, as she was historically for gay rights and was a feminist. (Sorry for the digression) '

My request is for more, well written books and websites detailing dominionism as it is being put into play. I need resources so that I don't come across as a complete nutjob about my fears and observations.

Snarking is fun, but I am at a tipping point in my life and may be about ready to start actively fighting the ignorance.

Edited for stupid spelling.

Have you read Quiverfull by Kathryn Joyce? She specifically pinpoints the baby-collecting part of dominionism, but name-checks and researches a slew of frequent fliers on here. Her writing is reasonable and has infuriated VF, Doug Phillips, and a number of other dominionists. It's written from a frankly feminist perspective, and when one of the adherents pipes up an objection, she simply quotes his own words back to him. I highly recommend it as one of the most levelheaded treatments of the movement I've come across.

Thank you. Will get this.

Second the rec on Quiverfull. Also, even though its focus is on the movement as played out at one particular college, I found God's Harvard pretty eye-opening reading.

I don't have any book recommendation, but sympathise with the family situation. I have known for some time that my SIL and her husband were anti-immigration - my husband got into a huge argument with his sister a couple of years ago about the issue. But a couple of weeks ago she posted stuff from the BNP (British National Party - nasty racist political group) on her FB page and it really shocked me that she'd gone that far. I've been on marches against the BNP and to think that I have family members supporting them made me feel sick. My husband can't let this sort of thing lie and I know it's going to cause tension next time we see them.

Then you know where I'm coming from. What is amazing is that my husband and I were never what I considered liberal (I mean, I know some true liberals, and I'm a piker!) but the right keeps shifting ever more to the right and I look more and more leftist to them.

Aaaand my summer reading list grows longer. Doug Phillips is a tool, and anything that personally offends him must be worthwhile.

Well, right now I'm reading The Good News Club: The Christian Right's Stealth Assault on America's Children, by Katherine Stewart.

Uh oh - Jon Stewart's Jewish, I think, so Stewart might just be a Jew-name.

Oh, good luck scrubbing that stain out of your family, Salex. If they dismiss a book's content because the author is Jewish, then you're probably fucked in teaching them anything.

But then again...

Excellent idea. I may not stop by for all of these, but I may pop in from time to time. Thanks.

And these were the ones I thought were closer to my viewpoint. So maybe not. I've already (in part from reading in here) decided if one of the more conservative relatives tries to corner me on some of their religious/political views, I plan to tell them that I've become concerned about them, and will be praying for them because they seem to have made an idol out of politics...

However, that won't work for nonreligous bigots.....

Well, I guess the best you can do is just keep putting the message out there. People - including family - will either get it or they won't.

I had no idea about this. Count me in! I've read a bunch of these and can jump right in on AJ Jacobs-- he's a riot.

Awesome! A book club that feeds my fundie obsession with others who get it!

You are going to love this book. The author would feel right at home here on FJ.

All the books sound great. Right now I've just started Spirtual Envy: An Agnostic Quest by Michael Krasny. Before that I finished Teavangicals, which at points made me want to throw the book at the authors head to knock sense into it. Has anyone else read Teavangicals?

Under the Banner of Heaven is the only Krakauer book I've never been able to finish. Not because it wasn't good- it's actually great- but because of the descriptions of the murders. They just hit too close. Would definitely recommend it for Mormom history though.

Jon Stewart's birth name is Jonathan Stuart Leibowitz. :)

I have a rec, but it's not a book. Most of the DailyKos diaries by dogemperor deal with Dominionism and Quiverfull. She was raised AoG, and has done a hell of a lot of research.

I have read most of the books mentioned in this thread, either because I learned of them here or because I sought them out on my own because I'm obsessed with these topics. I may have to find time to drop in on the FJ book club thread!
