Sarah Smith, who was engaged to Christopher a few years ago. And as we all might remember, their engagement was abruptly ended and that was just IT.

 

She works for Gothard, but she's a fun girl -- travels a lot, doesn't wear frumpers, and according to her new blog post, she tried sand-boarding (in form-fitting pants!) while on a recent trip to Nicaragua.

A Discovery of Why the Friendship Did Not Work

God has shown me that through the time of engagement, I had made an idol out of marriage, and I had made an idol out of my fiancé. I expected him to fulfill all my needs and be everything to me when, in reality, only God could be my source of everything.

In my mind, I imagined that my fiance was perfect in all ways and then, when I saw flaws, I became worried and fearful. By giving my entire heart and soul to this man, I was left with a divided heart and a heart cannot have two masters.

My fiancé started to be a competing affection with my Lord and Saviour, and I had made him a god in my life. I had been loving him on my own merit instead of giving myself over to the Lord for Him to love through me. I could not be a channel of holy, agape love, thereby encouraging my fiancé in the way of Christ-likeness. I now see why it is so vitally important that I give my whole heart to God and then allow Him to love other people, including my fiance through me. In that way, I do not have a divided heart and divided loyalty. I had lost my ardent desire to seek the Lord’s face, and my love for Him had grown lukewarm.

In my relationship with this young man, I began to love for my pleasure and my benefit. What started out as a Godly, pure love now turned into a fleshly love. As this selfish love grew, I began to appreciate fleshly traits rather than spiritual traits, which caused me to have a lack of trust in this man and my Saviour. I was now an idolater.

Wow, she does look a lot older than 28. I have to wonder what would have happened if she had married Christopher. I don't see her giving in and sticking to the Maxwell routine. I think she would have led Christopher astray.

It breaks my heart to think that a Maxwell-spawn could have it in him to attract a girl like her, to think that there might be potential in them to be fun and carefree only to see it killed by that fucked-up family-dynamic that is the Maxhell, actually no, it doesn't break my heart it angers me to no end :twisted:

I think that would have taken all the fun away from her if she became a Maxwell. She probably would have had a bunch of kids by now if she married into the Maxwell family!

I think she is older than 28 -- my guess is she hasn't updated her profile (and doesn't want to). Seems to me she is over 30, although I don't know why I would even know that.

I believe Christopher's family broke off the engagement, but it's never been fully explained. Whatever happened, I hope she kept the ring and hocked it and took a vacation! And yes, Stevie would have a stroke if he saw her in those completely defrauding sandboarding pants. She, like Elizabeth, certainly dodged a bullet regardless of how that break-up happened.

And it is interesting to me that both Christopher and Joseph seem to attract and be attracted to girls who are both pretty and fun, and then they ultimately reject them, presumably for their "fun" side. Well, STEVIE rejects them, but only after they are almost all the way to the altar. He's such a prick.

She is far too alive and experiences far too much LIFE to have ever been a Maxwell. They may hold similar theology, which I suspect contributed to the matchmaking, but she is alive - the Maxwells are not. It never would have worked and was doomed from the start. She's tied up in IBLP and all that crap up to her eyeballs, but she's still living life and enjoys things for the sake of enjoying them; her brother's have wives who obviously don't hold all the same beliefs (some wear jeans!!!), and she works. Like, paying jobs. The last one I remember her mentioning was as an Admin Asst for a "Christian man" - whatever that means, but regardless, it's a job, outside the home. She isn't under her parent's thumb for all her thoughts and ideas and, well, life. She traveled to China to 'teach' - alone, un escorted, no family member anywhere to be seen. She lived in Chicago when she 'worked' for IBLP, in an apartment, while her entire family went about their own lives.

For all the religion that these people follow, she is a person in her own right and that simply does not mesh with the cult of Steve.

I find it interesting that her sister-in-laws wear pants. I wonder if the family has lightened up since the engagement or if that was part of the break up? Can't have those pants wearing SILs being bad influences!

Yep, she has a lot of life in her. I think she scared Stevie with her independence and style. I like her, despite her support of Gothard. I hope she finds herself a husband if she wants one.

The photos of her and her mom in NYC just reinforce how un-Maxwellian she is. Can you imagine a Maxwell in NYC? LOL.

Two failed courtships. It will be hard for her to find a fundie guy who will take a chance on her with that in her background. I think she will have to look outside of the fundie/courtship world to find a husband.

I agree. She's tarnished! She was actually engaged to Christopher Maxwell, so it went beyond courtship. They had an October wedding date!

Honestly, I hope she pulls out of the Gothard organization and just figures out she's attractive and probably has some really good social/marketing skills and finds herself a path where she's super happy. I think in her world, unmarried women of her age are wearing an imaginary tshirt that says "what's wrong with me?", so it must be hard to navigate that. But she's got a pretty good life -- lives with her parents (I think), travels the world, and isn't a Maxwell.
