Dang! He's disturbing on so many levels. Well, I guess if he ever loses his current followers, he will have a decent backup career as a soft porn bodice buster author. Just more proof that they are all dangerously repressed.

I think he'd have to skip bodice-rippers and go straight to hard core rape fantasies. It's more in line with his screwed-up mindset.

I wonder if that dipshit child-killer-by-proxy knows what a world o' hurt his daughters might face because of his stupid views against their registering these marriages?

If my husband and I hadn't married in the eyes of the province, despite our living together, then his ongoing hospital stay - five fucking months and growing - would have been an even bigger nightmare: I wouldn't legally be allowed to do jack-shit on his behalf. And since he currently can't speak - he can write but he can't actually talk - that would be bad, m'kay.

I live in Canada. If we were in the US and this happened, then we'd also have to contend with a tonne of horeshit from an insurer - not that any of Michael Pearl's kids are likely to benefit from medical coverage, being so willfully stupid (and likewise "yoked" to equally dumb men) as to forgo something like basic coverage.

Wonder if they commit tax fraud and file "married filing jointly"? Wonder if they have taken the other legal steps to ensure that the other can make the decisions normally that go to a legal spouse ie: medical care, end of life issues, custody of remains and burial, housing issues, etc. I doubt it.

They probably won't file taxes at all. In fact, aren't the Pearls the ones who didn't get SSNs for their children?

I would be really surprised if they had insurance. I know my husband's aunt and uncle don't have insurance. They believe that it's showing a lack of faith that God will keep you alive/healthy.

Okay WOW. I've seen a lot of weird fundie stuff but that last part was off the cliff. I used to get blinding rage when I read paranoia-filled stupidity like that (I come from a family that is UBER UBER UBER afraid of government so I have heard this shite all my life) but actually...I'm starting to feel bad for them. Not enough to let it slide of course but just enough to think, Wow, I'm so glad I don't live a life that includes being that paranoid about "perverts."

I remember hearing about fundies who did that but then had to relent - especially for the boys - when their kids reached working age. No SSI (or SSN) - no job.

I believe in a God - one that permits free will. This sort of God will help you even if you're a victim of your own stupidity, but It can't force you to think.

I think most people have heard the old saw - one of my personal faves - about how a man in high flood waters waited on God for a rescue. (Another poster here recently shared a variation of the same.)

One boat floated by but the man rejected an offer of assistance from its passengers, saying God would deliver him. Then there came another boat, to which he gave the same answer.

Eventually the man was driven to his roof as the flood waters rose all around him. He begged God that his life might be spared.

A helicopter appeared and offered to throw him a ladder, which he refused.

He was eventually swept away by the waters, and died in the deluge. God met him in the afterlife, and the man asked God, "Why did you not save me?"

"Oh my beloved dipshit," God said: "I sent you two boats and a 'copter. You were the one who failed to act. I gave you a brain and several 'outs.' It is your responsibility to meet me halfway on this."

Question about the whole marriage license thing... Does that mean that they're not married in the eyes of the law? If so, that must be really hard to do. If not, then what's the point of anyone getting a marriage license?

I'm not certain about the law in their state, but the tradition of English Common Law holds that children born within wedlock are the property of their fathers, whereas children whose parents are not married (a marriage recognised by the state) belong exclusively to the mother. It's still rather difficult for "unwed dads" to sue for custody rights in many parts of the English-speaking world.

I swear this was done deliberately by Pearl, and the gay thing is just a weak excuse. He holds a lot of power over his sons-in-law if they would find it difficult to get full custody of their children should they decide to leave his daughters. Since the daughters have no education/training to support a family, they would probably move back in with Michael and Debi. Pearl has effectively taken his grandchildren hostage from their own fathers. I wonder if they are aware of the power he holds over them.

debrand, please allow me to thank you for bringing to the fore my all-time, most favorite slab of fundie WTFery.

And holierthanyou, allow me to thank you even MORE for the much-needed brain bleach.

Well, technically it was mostly cake, but still...

http://youtu.be/9XB4p9fCz1Y

Story starts at 1:18

"all the women gasped and all the men laughed, and I just laughed and started cleaning up-- dress was stained, but it was homemade and only cost about 100 bucks, so it didnt' matter anyway."

What? Sort of a grosser version of smearing cake in one another's face that was the trend for a while (hubs and I declined to follow that trend) but also, all the men laughed and all the women gasped, suggests even the other women in the group found it questionable and the men are all a bunch of pigs--even she seems a little embarrassed to tell the story.

That is very disturbing! 30 minutes into their marriage and he completely showed her and all of their loved ones that he has no respect for her as a human being, that she is simply trash that he owns.

BTW, what is up with her weird accent?

It sounds like they're moving closer and closer to hanging a bloodied sheet out the window the morning after the ceremony.

Ugh, so true. This isn't the first time I've read this, but it isn't any less disturbing. The Pearls are just terrible.

Something about the fundieness coupled with the weird, creepy, public sexual displays suggest something....not right with Michael Pearl's relationship with Shoshana.

I think that with all the sexual repression going on around the hard-core fundies - we will start to see more and more weird sexual kink. If only because they have no idea of what is and isn't publicly acceptable, having been so sheltered from society.

Also - EWWWWW - can someone pass the brain bleach?

Also - they think gays are disturbing? Really? Oh the hypocrisy - it makes my head hurt

Yes, they're not married in the eyes of the law. I don't know what TN laws are re: common law marriage/domestic partnership, but I'm pretty sure you have to have lived together for a certain amount of time for that to be recognized. Then again, I'm sure James and Shoshana make it a point to live off the grid as much as possible. Wouldn't want people to think a Manly Man who lives up to Michael Pearl's example has become Uncle Sam's bitch or anything

Per Wikipedia, Tennessee has never recognized common-law marriage.

Yeah, they are up a creek without a paddle. Their marriage is not legal in TN, therefore they are not each other's next of kin. That can be problematic to say the least in certain circumstances. Since they don't believe in "legal" marriages, I'm willing to bet they don't believe in wills and other legal documents.
