New Laws Regarding Abortion in NC

I'm so disappointed in my homestate.

The North Carolina Senate voted 29-19 Thursday to overturn Gov. Bev Perdue’s veto of a measure that marks a major shift in state policy. The law requires doctors tell women seeking abortions at least 24 hours in advance about adoption, public assistance programs for poor families, and that fathers are liable for child support. The House voted to cancel the veto earlier this week, so the measure is now law

This treats women like children. Really, does anyone not know that adoption is an option or that they couldn't get child support fromt he fathers?

i'm a north carolina girl, too...i'm saddened, but not surprised. this is the state, after all, who elected jesse helms 500 times.

This special legislative session is just the nastiest, most spiteful waste of taxpayer dollars. Special sessions cost like $50K/day - it's so galling looking at the jobs that were cut and programs that were defunded in the 2011-12 state budget, and thinking of what could be done with that money instead.

They think women don't know these things already? And if they think they don't, how do they think a woman will be capable of taking care of a baby? Anyone who doesn't know adoption is a thing shouldn't be having kids. Sense...it makes none. And this is just sad.

What about mandatory counseling for women who want to carry a pregnancy to term? I consider creating and raising an new human being to be a major freaking decision - one that should not be made lightly. (In fact, considering how easy it is to significantly fuck your kids up for life - without even meaning to - is part of the reason that I choose not to reproduce. First, do no harm, right?)

Not to mention, of Republicans have their way, the public assistance programs that these doctors are now required to inform "poor" people about wil have gone the way of the dodo bird.

I'm from here too. Makes me sick!

Another NC-dweller here who is disgusted - although not surprised - at this development. As I've said before, you can't swing a dead cat (got the phrase right this time!) without hitting a church here, and the liberals in Chapel Hill and Asheville aren't enough to out-vote the religious right.

Nearby is an outfit called the "Pregnancy Support Center". It is not a clinic, it's just a sign in front of a house. It also has other signs in the front yard, such as "Vote the Bible". Part of me wants to do an Itty Bitty Titty Club action on those signs, but unfortunately it's on a main road. Maybe if I go in the middle of the night... :shhh:

Another NC dweller that is disapointed but not surprised. The state is crawling with IFB who want to force everyone to live just like them. But at the same time they claim to be anti-government and want the government to stay out of their lives.

Chip-chip-chipping away. That's how they said they were going to do it (anti-choicers) and they're doing it. It's now illegal in Ohio to have an abortion after a "fetal beating heart" can be detected. That's about. . . what? Five weeks gestation? A lot of women don't even know that they're pregnant by then, so the law is pretty much criminalizing abortion in Ohio.

God, I hate these backward assholes.

I have my heart in my mouth hoping my 23 year old daughter (a NC resident ) is careful and does not have an unplanned pregnancy. I hate these people.

If you chip away at my right to reproductive freedom can I chip away at yours?

These legislators are just idiots. Seriously, what's the point of the law in Ohio? Women in Ohio can get into a car and drive to Michigan if they want an abortion. The only people who wouldn't are those who couldn't afford to do it. And if they can't afford to drive a few hours to get an abortion, how are they going to afford to raise a kid? Now, they want to cut welfare to these women they are forcing into parenthood. Seriously, I think in about 5 years time, you'll see kids eating out of garbage cans in this country. The U.S. is looking more like a third world country everyday.

Maybe we should make viagra illegal too? That would solve part of the problem. If men can't get it up, they won't impregnate anyone.

Silly Childless, you speak as if you're expecting them to be coming from a place of logic and good intentions when, in fact, they just want to punish women for being evil, filthy whores.

And really, the states have been so effective in collecting child support from the fathers, right? And these good Christians are lining up in droves to adopt children.... especially the minority and handicapped ones, yeah, it just warms my heart. Yet this same legislature will vote to cut spending on welfare programs around election time because our taxes are too darn high. Boggles the mind. If you want them born , you have to take care of them, otherwise, butt out.

SERIOUSLY!

The thing that disturbs me about this is that it's more widespread then one state. NC, Ohio, and Florida are the ones I have seen in the news recently. Are there others? They keep chipping away at it.

This got me thinking about the Bush Faith Based funding and how CPC's and lots of pro life religious groups were given government money during his administration as well as abstinence education etc. Is this still happening or has Obama made changes?

The only part of this that I can halfway agree with is discussing all of the options available with a patient, before making a medical decision. I know that it may seem like common knowledge that adoption is an option and things like that, but I grew up in an area where it was "common knowledge" that douching with Coca Cola or baking soda and water would prevent pregnancy, so common knowledge isn't always so common. I do agree with every woman being given accurate, unbiased and complete information about her choices. With an emphasis on accurate, unbiased and complete. Once that's been done, butt out and let the woman make her own decision. If she's not capable of deciding whether to choose abortion or adoption, what makes these polititians think that she's capable of raising a child?

I really and firmly believe that abstainance only sex education does a terrible disservice to young adults and, yes, some people really don't understand how birth control works. My high school graduating class is a good example of that, as there were dozens of girls who had a baby bump under their commencement robe. Only one, that I know of, was a welcome pregnancy and the girl had been trying to get pregnant since she was 13 years old. But that's another thread altogether. TMany young adults don't understand that there is a failure rate and that backup methods are a good idea. They don't understand that antibiotics or certain herbal remedies interfere with birth control pills. They don't understand that condoms break and what to do if that happens. We're not teaching people how to avoid pregnancy, refusing to let them terminate the pregnancy and then telling them that they're on their own, once the baby is born. This is just ridiculous! If these politicians really want to reduce abortions, they need to start making sure that every high school student understands birth control, how it works, failure rates, the importance of backup methods and make the morning after pill more available, with no questions asked. Until they do that, I'll vote against any legislation restricting a woman's right to choose and I'll also vote against any politician who supports it.

I'd also like to require that anyone attempting to pass legislation on a woman's reproductive rights be capable of getting pregnant themselves. Men aren't capable of knowing what it's like to be in the position of having to make a choice like this and, until they are, they have no business telling any woman what she can or can't do with her life and her body.

There's also the issue of women who have to terminate a pregnancy for some kind of life threatening medical reason, like an ectopic pregnancy. Having to have an unwanted termination was gutwrenching enough, and my doctor exercised a lot of discretion in dealing with it. If I had to have an ultrasound and listen to the tech describing the baby that I wanted so much, yet couldn't have, I shudder to think how I'd reacted. I still cry sometimes, thinking about how old my baby would be now, wondering whether it would have been a boy or a girl, wondering what he or she would have looked like. This kind of crap would have only made it harder to do what absoluely had to be done.

Until legislators are able to take a look at the big picture of unplanned/ unwanted pregnancies, they're only going to succeed in creating yet another generation of poverty stricken children, unprepared parents and increase the dependance on the very social services that they're so eager to destroy.

Perhaps, before we even talk about sex education, restrictions on abortion or any of this, we should start discussing IQ testing and tests to determine deductive reasoning skills as being a requirement to seek public office.

Abortion counselling is already mandatory.

I kind of figured that, but I have little knowledge of this kind of thing to draw on. What other people do in their doctors office has never been of much concern to me, LOL.

I think Texas (I know you're shocked) passed a law requiring women to have a transvaginal ultrasound before they can get an abortion (so they can see that it's a "real baybee", I guess). That is terrible for any woman (invasive, much?) but I can't imagine how triggering that would be for rape victims to have that probe stuck up them.

These people are so evil.
