Planned Survivalist Community

 This isn't going to end up being a whacko-filled cult (assuming it even makes it out of the planning stage), at all. Nope. Never.

You can pretty much assume it will be white-filled.

Edit - I keep waiting for the ghost of Thomas Jefferson to appear and tell the folks who keep (mis)using his name to STFU already. Jefferson was creative and worldly, saw the value of public education (hello, UVA!), and was STFU already. Jefferson was creative and worldly, saw the value of public education (hello, UVA!), and was incredibly skeptical of organized religion/Christianity.

This! There are several commentors in the blog section lamenting the fact that the community doesn't hsve a standardized religion or a One True Church. Oh, but Jefferson!!11

Good Lucifer, how much I detest this idea of "American Exceptionalism". I love my neighbours to the south even if I don't agree 100% with everything they do in foreign policy, in commerce between nations or in their domestic policy (although that last one is none of my business).

Many countries are "exceptional", not just the USA. I remember taking some courses in college like "20th Century American History" or "Intro. to American Politics" all the while doing a lot of eye-rolling when reading politicans' speeches on Manifest Destiny and American Exceptionalism. I'm still fascinated with that country and all its contradictions...

Re: that planned community. Looking into my tea leaves I predict it will not last more than 3 yrs; its end will come in a joint FBI-ATF raid. Hopefully that raid will end with seized arsenals of weapons and bruised egos, not with casualties among the police and the paranoid members... Govt. incursions into these compounds tend to end badly.

Edited to remove Roman numerals

Edited a 2nd time to break a run-on sentence

I don't want to live there. But I SO want it to happen. It's going to be a never ending source of drama and amusement. And that's before the trash starts piling up or the sewage treatment fails or the houses fall down. I suspect they can get a good 10 or so years out of it before things come crashing down.

My favorite is that their little oasis is completely unenforceable. Even if they form a militia (and I SO hope they form a militia), housing laws won't allow them to keep out gays, blacks, liberals, or anyone else. If this is a NICE, white bread community as they claim, nice people that don't necessarily agree with them are going to want to live there. This should be twenty years of great entertainment, people.

I predict it won't get off the ground, or whoever is accepting fees will disappear

Getting some definite Waco/Jonestown vibes from this. Waco, because these people seem to WANT to engage in physical combat with the government. If they didnt have kids,I wouldnt give a shit. Jonestown, because why the hell would thy need an amphitheatre if not to have some sort of religious overseer preaching sermons and telling everyone over the loudspeaker to drink the kool-aid when the government comes knocking at their door? If this takes off,I can only see it ending one of those two ways. Poor kids. They dont get to choose their families.

This. First thing I thought of when I clicked the link. The only way this can end well is if it doesn't get built.

Edited: riffle

I'd like to see this joined up with Glenn Beck's planned survivalist/self-sufficient/Ayn Rand-worshiping town. Could result in some interesting...uh...dynamics. ;)

Damn, I had to read all the way down to where it says this is going to be in Idaho to realize that this DOESN'T refer to The Citadel, as in state-run military college in SC, the campus of which is about 20 miles from me. Until I got to the Idaho part I could have sworn that many of the descriptive phrases could also have applied to the college. What a relief that it's going to be couple of time zones away.

When I first saw mention of the Glenn Beck thing I had to look really hard to figure out if it was the same or different. No, it's two Libertarian Utopia's where people can Go Galt and worship the Free Market.

Yeah, a rip-off is very possible...

ETA: Gustava, I thought the same when I read the op's first sentence at first! I thought that it meant the Citadel in the Carolinas. Visions of Fort Sumter in the 1860s sprang to my mind.

Speaking of planned "ideological" communities, whatever happened to "Ave Maria" village in FL? Dunno if I have the name right. It was a planned community founded by Tom Monaghan, the founder and former CEO of Domino's Pizza, formed on traditionnalist catholic principles. Does it still exist or did it only exist in Monaghan's dreams and prayers? Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the whole thing was to be run according to Opus Dei's vision of catholicism?

So the plan is that everyone moves out to idaho to work for the company store If they get out of paying property taxes then they'd have to charge fees for using all community resources like schools and libraries. Sounds like other corporate towns where everyone sells their soul to the company store.

Also what is the rule if someone flunks their shooting test? Do they get kicked out or do they have to take more marksman classes?

The Citadel is evolving as a planned community where residents are bound together by:

The Citadel is not profit-driven. The Citadel is Liberty-driven: specifically Thomas Jefferson's Rightful Liberty.

Marxists, Socialists, Liberals and Establishment Republicans will likely find that life in our community is incompatible with their existing ideology and preferred lifestyles.

In other words, if Thomas Jefferson were alive today he wouldn't exactly find a warm welcome at The Citadel either. These people misunderstand what Jefferson stood for easily as much as they misunderstand the teachings of Jesus.

The founders were progressives. They were willing to radically change their system of government because their old one wasn't working for them. Oh, that fundies would learn THAT lesson!

This is creepy news. St. Maries is only 2 hours from where I live. Then again, I guess I shouldn't be surprised. This area of Idaho pretty much always has some kind of wacko group. :-(

Thanks, SevenSevern.

Love me some "Sovereign Citizens"; they are quite an entertaining bunch. I like to read about their zany antics, which tend to occur often in Alabama and Wyoming for some reasons. Why those two states? Beats me.

Just to be clear: when I say that I love them I say it with a ton of sarcasm. Some of them are inoffensive loners living in their basements and spending way too much time online blogging about how the higher autority they obey to this side of God is the county sheriff, while a few others are among the most dangerous potential domestic terrorists, according to the FBI and Homeland Security.

In Québec this movement is non-existent, although last year during his trial for possessing child porn a somewhat-famous comedian stood up and told the judge that his identity is not "Jean-François Harrisson" (his name) because he doesn't recognize the civil registry or some similar BS. Five minutes of this spiel and the judge banged his gravel to order a psych evaluation on him...That pedo comedian (he pleaded guilty so I can say that he's one) is black; the S.C movement, if I'm not mistaken, is used extensively by white supremacists in the USA. The S.C beliefs are very complicated, or rather non-sensical, so I can't really explain their philosophy in one paragraph.

Law enforcements officers in some parts of the US have a S.C database, as they are getting very scared of them. S.C have been know to shoot cops without blinking.

ETA: my syntax was all over the place.

In Wyoming they can do what ever they want and no one notices. In Alabama, no one (or very few) cares.

Marksman classes? We don't need no stinkin' marksman classes - just stick the bullets in and pull the trigger.

Oh yes. I'm sure it will be. I wonder if any anti-discrimination laws would apply though

The sooner these right wingnuts separate themselves from the rest of society, the better. I hope they all go live in walled-off communities and take their guns and jeebus and Glenn Beck and Sarah Palin with them. It can't happen soon enough for me. Any idiots who believe it's a good idea to arm 13-year-olds need to be removed from civilization. I am surprised this community isn't going to be built on Alabama or Mississippi, though (if it happens.)
