Hobby lobby gets a kick in the crotch for christmas

This is only the start but it is a good one.

WASHINGTON (AP) - Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor on Wednesday denied a request to block part of the federal health care law that requires employee health-care plans to provide insurance coverage for the morning-after pill and similar emergency contraception pills.

Hobby Lobby Stores and a sister company, Mardel Inc., sued the government, claiming the mandate violates the religious beliefs of its owners.

In an opinion, Sotomayor said the stores fail to satisfy the demanding legal standard for blocking the requirement on an emergency basis. She said the companies may continue their challenge to the regulations in the lower courts.

Company officials say they must decide whether to violate their faith or face a daily $1.3 million fine beginning Jan. 1 if they ignore the law.

Attorneys for the government have said the drugs do not cause abortions and that the U.S. has a compelling interest in mandating insurance coverage for them.

In ruling against the companies last month, U.S. District Judge Joe Heaton said churches and other religious organizations have been granted constitutional protection from the birth-control provisions but that "Hobby Lobby and Mardel are not religious organizations."

This makes me all warm and fuzzy. Although I have disagreed with some rulings Sotomayor made when she was serving in lower courts, on this one she hit it out of the park.

I think I will continue to not shop at hobby lobby. They are spending more money fighting this mandate then they would spend on insurance for their employees.

Besides, I am not impressed with their selection and I can get the same things at Michele's and Joann's.

I will just never get this stance from companies. It's not like the owners are being force fed birth control pills now. It's the same thing with gay marriage and abortion. Just because it's legal doesn't mean you're now going to be forced to get "gay married" or have an abortion.

I spend a lot of money on my hobbies. I won't shop at Hobby Lobby, first because they specifically state (and have forever) on their front windows that they reserve the right to search your belongings. Nope. You better have some suspicion. Second, because of this generally assholish behavior. I have a cousin who works for them, too (sorry, cuz, your employer sux).

What gets me about all of this is that they get to write off things as business expenses, including labor. I don't know about health insurance being a tax write-off, but I would be surprised if it were NOT so.

I purposely shop at places that employ my family members (and I have a very large extended family) but I won't shop at HL. I was at one in Denver once and I was not impressed. I wondered what all the fuss was.

This tells me that the CEO/owner doesn't give a shit about his company. That he's pretty much done with it and is willing to let it go under, not caring that all of his employees will be out of jobs. Not just the retail staff he doesn't give two fucks about but also the corporate staff, his suppliers, ect. So, basically, he's made his money and is ready to retire and all of his staff and workers can go jump in the lake.

Not only will the stores most likely fail (do they even do that much in business daily, most days?) but he will blame everything on the government in an attempt to look like the good guy.
