Star Wars goes Disney :(

Is anyone else weeping quietly in a corner? I feel like a part of my childhood has been kidnapped by evil super villans and made to hang out with Winnie The Pooh and fucking Bambi.

A little part of me died today.

Honestly, I'm not too upset about it. I think George Lucas did far more damage to the franchise than Disney will.

I figure, it's a toss-up as to which company is the bigger money-grubber. You've got Lucas and his never-ending tweaking of the Star Wars movies, or Disney's "DVD vault" profit system and endless churning-out of crap sequels. Maybe now we'll see an end to the new-and-improved versions of the SW trilogy, and maybe (not that I'm holding my breath) the original-recipe trilogy will be released on DVD in a better package.

ScreenRant.com has the pros and cons online (not totally serious, and #5 made me laugh - the idea of Leia being included in the Disney Princess line); there's also some more serious discussion, too .

I hope so!

I'm cautious about it. I'm not too crazy over Disney taking Star Wars over.

At the very least, this might bring about the release of the long hidden Star Wars Christmas Special!

The Nostalgia Critic did an episode trashing it. It was pretty funny.

Always a huge Disney fan, and always a huge Star Wars fan. If anyone at all is going to take it over, Disney is the one to do it. George will stay on as creative consultant.

Yes, sometimes the sequels aren't great, some are. At least if Leia joins the princess line she'll be one that kicks butt a la Mulan.

Suffering Disneyland withdrawls here....

I dunno about this, man.... I'm a huge Star Wars fan. I'm so sick of them making the stupid cartoons, etc. I don't want any more weird stuff happening to it....

$4 billion? C'mon, George.... you're rich enough already.

Okay, I've had my heart broken by George Lucas just like all the other Star Wars fans, but I'm kinda pro this deal. 1) Disney also owns Marvel. Avengers was awesome, and this deal hasn't affected the comics at all. The Avengers cartoon on one of the Disney channels is impressive. Mostly, for the fact that it's presented story lines better and more coherently then the comics. Oh, and the fact they've gone obscure in the use of some characters(ex: Beta Ray Bill) 2) Lucas is giving a chunk of the money to charity http://www.themarysue.com/lucasfilm-disney-charity/ I mean, the story isn't all that specific, but at least it's something. 3) If this deal helps the SW universe move away from the Jar-Jar pall of cutesy that has shrouded it since 1999 ( I guess earlier if you're anti-Ewok) without the iron thumb of Lucas.

Sorry, my nerd rant is over now.

My immediate response was "George, how could you?" Then I thought he was probably securing his kids' fortunes for generations to come. Go George!

I was kind of upset too but then I realized that of the new(er) stuff I've only seen the fourth movie (ep. 1?) and I didn't like it so I never watched anything after that. I guess if I need a SW fix I can always just watch the original

I'm not bothered by the deal at all. Star Wars had already gone Disney years ago with the Star Tours rides at multiple parks. I can't see Disney devoting as much space to Star Wars as Universal has to Harry Potter, but the purchase does give Disney more opportunities for Star Wars rides and attractions. I'm kind of excited about Leia as a Disney Princess if it gets more girls interested in sci-fi.

As a Star Wars fan I'm majorly pissed off about Disney's new ownership of Lucas Films. What bugs me even more is their plan of doing a S.W. VII movie; part of me should be thrilled, but I'm not...Weird, but I cannot imagine a S.W film without Anakin-Darth Vader in it. The story of S.W VII will be set after the events of S.W VI ("Return of The Jedi"), and since Vader died in that...What's it gonna be about? 20 years after with older Lea, Luke and Han, or 50 years after with totally new characters?

I've never read any of the "expanded universe" books; the only story I know is the canon, with the "Clone Wars" animated film and, scarily enough, the "Star Wars Christmas Special". Yes, I saw that last one as a kid, and I still remember how bad it was  .

Even my best-friend's husband, who is THE biggest Star Wars fan that I know (trust me on this, his knowledge of the SW universe is scary  ), is scared of it. Like me and many others he's affraid of what Disney will do to the franchise.

The StarWars ride at Disneyland was, by far, the best ride there. I'm optimistic that Disney can make a decent movie, and Star Wars definitely makes Disney cooler. There's a possibility it could be a good coupling.

I read an article today on Gawker that used a Justin Bieber doll to act out the Elmo sex scandal. One of the comments on the article mentioned how much the doll looked like Luke Skywalker dolls, and that they were concerned that Luke will be played by the Beiber. I now can see that happening.
