Slut Dropping?

He described a group of excited male first-years who told him about “slut droppingâ€. The process, they explained, involves driving around town with friends in the early hours of the morning and offering a lift home to a young woman they deem a “slut†(usually a woman in a “post-club stateâ€). After asking her address, they drive as fast and as far as possible in the opposite direction before forcing the woman out of the car and using a camera to film her “standing by the side of the road as they drive awayâ€. It’s difficult to know how widely this has occurred but the concept is reminiscent of a disturbing new trend of ‘slut-shaming’. On one occasion, the first-year added, it had taken the girl eight hours to get home. When asked how he knew, he explained that they were ‘friends’ on Facebook.

Today, let me introduce you to a practice known as "slut-dropping." Apparently it's all the rage in the UK, and I'm shocked that it hasn't caught on Stateside, since this sounds right up a lot of jerks' alleys. Here goes: A gang of merrymaking young squires careens around the local village in an auto-mobile during the wee hours of the morning. When they see a young lass stumbling home alone from a night of intoxicating fun, wearing clothing indicative of both the presence of sexuality and the wearer's awareness of said sexuality, they stop the car and offer to give the damsel in distress a ride home. What gentlemen! BUT THERE'S A TWIST.

Instead of driving the girl home, they drive her in the opposite direction of her home, as far as they possibly can, and then, when they get to the TBD nowhere spot, they drop her off, laughing and laughing like teenage Mitt Romney cutting a gay kid's hair, and drive away, filming the "slut" they just "dropped" as she angrily/sadly watches them recede from her.

What sort of barbarians would pull such a stunt? Why, college blokes, just having a bit of fun during a time known as "freshers' week" in the UK. In the US, depending on where you went to school, it's called "freshman orientation week" or "pledge week" or "the entirety of your freshman year," and in both places, the introduction of new students to a college or university campus provides the perfect opportunity to teach those incoming freshmen important lessons about life. Namely: let's teach those sluts a lesson about what happens to sluts who go slutting!/Hey sluts, come hang out with us!

Is Jezebel extrapolating that this is 'all the rage in the UK' based on the Independent article? I've honestly never heard of it. While I don't doubt it has happened, I don't think it's a trend or a craze.

I didn't think it was a trend myself. Sorry, that the article makes all UK college guys sound like assholes. Most men are decent people. However, women get mixed messages in society about their sexuality. If they are perceived as 'sluts' some people consider them worthy of disrespectful and dehumanizing treatment.

I have not heard of this as a trend. But nothing would surprise me. I know I am going to sound like some fuddy duddy, but this generation of 'X-factor the world owes me fame and if not that then at least money. It is all about me, and why can nobody see that. There is no wrong when having a laugh and social networking is real life. Morals? My parents forgot that bit whilst trying to give me everything I needed and wanted.'

I know. A very broad sweep of a generation. But also all to common :(

I'm annoyed with this. Yes what is happening is dreadful and I wonder how long before a young woman is found dead in a ditch as a result. But Jezebel implies it is happening all over and it isn't. I'd not even heard about it before today.

I left this comment.

Whilst I usually find the content of articles here about misogyny to good, I'm a little concerned with this one. I live in the UK and I have never heard of 'Slut Dropping', which is strange considering you imply it is '... all the rage..' here. So I did a little digging; first I asked a few local friends, a couple of whom are in university. No, they had not heard of it. Second I posted on a forum I'm on. This forum has many members from the length and breadth of the UK; nobody there had heard of it either. So I googled it; and it seems that most of the links I got were related to the Independent article. I got a couple of facebook groups/pages, which were only opened in the last few months.

From what I did find was that it seems 'slut dropping' has been happening at one or two universities in the UK by a few alcohol fuelled morons with nothing better to do, so I'm not sure where you get that it is '... all the rage'.

I'm glad that the media has picked up on it as it needs to be nipped in the bud. This is downright dangerous behaviour and I wonder how long it will be before a 'slut' is 'dropped' never to be seen alive again. However Jezebel implying that this is happening all over the UK is wrong. It isn't.

By spreading this misinformation all you are doing is furthering the myth, which often comes from USA right wingers, that the UK is a hotbed of sin and debauchery brought about from godless socialism. By doing this you are not helping to end misogyny, you are helping it to spread.

The reason the story doesn't ring true to me as a widespread 'rage' is not that I have some misguided idea that our undergrads are saints, it just does not seem practical to me. For one thing, I don't know many students who can drive / afford to keep a car.

ETA: great comment, Sola.

Edited: I wanted to tweak the wording and punctuation a tiny bit. It's still all in there.

Good point. I was at a UK university for four years and am back now and I just don't see this happening all over the place - not because people are so damn great, but simply because the number of freshers with a car or who can even drive is really low. I knew like one person with a car until at least third year. My university doesn't even issue parking permits to freshers.

That, and I've never even heard of this term before. I'm sure some assholes have done it. I'm also reasonably sure it's not a trend/craze.

Yes this is likely and probably more accurate.
