Texas church wants to lose non-profit status

The sign outside of Church In The Valley (Leakey, Texas) says

Vote for the Mormon, not the Muslim! The capitalist, not the communist!

in clear violation of the Johnson amendment. It's Texas, so I doubt anything will come of this beyond outrage on the internet. If someone actually tries to do something about it, I expect lots of screaming about persecution and Christian hating, but the church won't lose its tax exempt status.

I have said it before wnd I am sure I will have cause to say it again, but I cannot wtap my head around the "capitalusm good!" attitude fundies have. Or why they insist that Obama is a muslim communist. Do they not remember history 12?

Oh, that's right. It is the sotdrt we are talking about.

Wow, I'm used to "Obama is a socialist", but communist? Wow, that is a huge stretch! (BTW I'm a socialist, and i understand that Obama is, sadly, not a socialist!)

Always nice to see McCarthyism alive and well.....

These people clearly did not take a US history class.

Or a government class.

Or a religion class.

Or have a brain.

I'm a communist and he is NOT a comrade. There are days when I want to write to every right-winger in America explaining why he is not.

I'm not being stingy here. I'm much more of a broad church type than many commies. I've called Maoists, Trotskyists and Stalinists comrade with a straight face. Hell, I've gone as far as regarding anarchists as comrades (and got in trouble for doing so).

Obama ain't one. He's a rather ineffective centre leftist. He has a nice line in popular appeal and is obviously a very intelligent person (as is his wife) but he's not, NOT a communist.

I have been a Marxist for going well into double figures now and have forgotten more left-wing theory than most righty types have ever read. I regard being called a communist as a compliment and I do my best to live up to it. I would call him a comrade if I thought he was one. He isn't.

My dad was a Socialist. He also repeatedly state that Obama was definitely not a socialist. But keep in mind, 99% of the people saying that Obama is a Socialist or Communist lack a clear understanding of what either of those terms mean.

QFT. My dad's birth mother posts on FB that Obama is a Muslim and a socialist, blah blah blah. But she can't define either of those terms when asked. She just spouts Tea Party racist crap. I have her hidden now.

I hope these churches lose their tax exempt status. I heard that a lot of evangelical churches in Ohio are going to test the law by preaching specific politics on a certain Sunday. Did that already happen or is that next sunday?

Obama is a moderate. He is not even liberal/progressive, much less "Commie" or socialist. He's too conservative for me, but a better choice than Mittens.

This probably comes as no surprise to you, but if you asked the average American just what a communist or socialist is, few if any could tell you. They don't know the origins, the backstories, the logic behind either one, or how they're supposed to function in actual practice. All they know is that if (insert demagogue name) says it's bad for ya, it must be.

That church SHOULD lose its tax exempt status. It's sad though, that I wouldn't be surprised if they didn't. In many places in the US, church and state don't seem as separate as they should be. Why does being Muslim have to be a bad thing in a president? I hope one day I can truly believe that anyone of any race, religion, gender or sexual orientation can be president of the United States. Obama advanced that a bit by being the first black president, but having a Muslim president shouldn't be a bad thing. Not that Obama's a Muslim - he is so obviously not. Just that Muslim shouldn't be an insult. Socialist or communist shouldn't be an insult either, but those are things people can disagree with politically.

Personally, I hope someday there's an Atheist president. I think that'd be harder for certain segments of the American public than a president of a non-Christian religion.

Thank you!

JFC, remember to majority of Americans, these terms have different definitions.

Socialist = person who wants to take our stuff and give it to people we don't like

Communist = person who thinks government should do stuff for people/person I disagree with

Communist also comes with "traitor" overtones.
