And thank goodness they do. Those kids need to be exposed to people who are not constantly filled with hate. If I had parents in WBC, I'd want to be in public school in order to get the fuck away from them.

*I am not implying that everybody in Kansas is a nut. My sister and brother live there, and they both think the Phelpses are scum. I know many other Kansans who think the same.

I think Jason Wu (from his last name and bad photo) must be the little guy who asked to join the WBC in one of the latest documentaries on the family - I think this was about 2 years ago or so. He was from San Franscisco, and although he was obviously Asian-born, from his accent, had the weirdest little campy lisp on top of it. * He professed to be sincere but couldn't really express himself when asked why he wanted to join the church. Shirley Phelps- Roper seemed really skeptical about him on camera and I have to say I felt the same; it was like he was some queer man trying to infiltrate the group but didn't have the intelligence/ social acumen/familiarity with English to do so successfully. He just gave out this vibe of not being quite right, and I actually thought that he'd open fire on them or something if they let him into the fold. I guess he checked out OK with Gramps in the end, although that's not really an endorsement.

I hope he's not some unstable gay man who will try to murder the group, or some kind of "ex-gay" trying to avenge himself on his old community. Either only benefits the WBC ( who totally want to be martyred) and sets the LGBTQ movement back a decade or so until it's forgotten.

* I know that not all gay men in the world lisp, nor do they all come from San Fran. I also know that fundies often are unintentionally camp ( see Philips, Doug) - but I have known gay men who deliberately cultivated the "gay voice" for one reason or another.

Yeah he was in the second documentary that Louis Theroux did on the family called America's Most Hated Family in Crisis. Louis asked him if he was a member of the church and Shirley was quick to point out that he wasn't "worthy"/ hadn't proved himself enough yet.

I knew who he was as soon as I read the Gawker article! I actually watched the Louis Theroux episode just the other day, and yeah, that guy had my gaydar going crazy. I couldn't decide whether I found it more pathetic or sick that he was actively trying to join the church, but I guess he got what he was after.

I'll have to see if I can find it, but an interview w/ one of the kids who got out said more-or-less the opposite. That basically, since his parents were such outspoken assholes, he was sent to public school where he'd be shunned and abused by the other kids as a way to 'prove' to him that his dad was right, the rest of the world was shit, filled w/ awful people. :(

I don't think he will get in either. The WBC is hated quite a bit in Kansas. The mayor/possibly former mayor of Topeka was known to make apology calls to the mayors of the towns and cities where the WBC protests at. That mayor would tell the other mayors that they were embarrassed by the WBC.

By that logic, there's more chosen people in prison than anywhere else in the world.

Kansas held hearing on evolution as recently as 2005 (even made a movie about it, Kansas vs. Darwin), so WBC's position isn't as laughable as it might be in a state where evolution is widely accepted as fact.
