As a middle class, educated, southern woman...our tendency to be overly polite at the risk of damaging egos is NOT only for men. It's for everyone. Good manners toward everyone is the cultural identity.

Okay, so that said, once you "learn the language", so to speak, you realize that we are just as outspoken and open as everybody else, we just do it in different ways with different words.

...and we also gossip relentlessly.

It's nothing to do with protecting men's fragile egos (at least not anymore)...it's more to do with some sort of genteel (and somewhat surfacial) cultural identity.

Back on topic...I'm also not the least bit surprised at the numbers, for reasons valsa and others have already stated.

A lot of those adolescents living with HIV are probably teen moms who are passing the virus onto to their kids. We all know that the south has a huge teen pregnancy epidemic.

the south is a big area. You can't really say it has a huge teen pregnancy epidemic,

Memphis does, but many area of the south do not. Including the Carolinas.

Op-ed from a doctor in FL who recently had a patient die because she had been living with undiagnosed HIV for years and sought medical help way, way too late. The patient was also the mother of two small children.

It's too bad the reforms she is asking for won't happen in FL since they have a god awful governor now who is more interested in making his health care sugar daddies rich than actually providing quality care for the less fortunate citizens of FL.
