The Duggars Listen to Terrible Music... and they like it!

There is a new Parentables TLC article out written by "Michelle" where she discusses the Duggar's taste in music. In a shocking coincidence every single Duggar happens to have the exact same taste in music with no outside influence whatsoever! In a nod to the Bates some of the kids apparently listen to Christian bluegrass music (whatever that is).

Anyway, that's not the most interesting part. Michelle claims her favourite CD is called Peace be Still that she plays every chance she gets and that calms the little kids down. I did some googling and, lo an behold, it is sold by IBLP! I'm not really sure why music like this has to come from and explicitly Christian source when there is nothing Christian about the songs, except for the titles. Anyway, I listened to some of the sample songs and almost fell asleep. I like a lot of classical music and even enjoy listening to CBC classical radio, but these songs are so simple, they sound like something you would play just learning to play. There is so much great music out there and to limit yourself already to only things that are "edifying" and then to limit yourself even further to only things made by IBLP is kind of sad.

What the hell is instrumental Christian gospel music? Doesn't most gospel music have a beat that might lead to dancing?

It's not like the kids can do anything else for stress relief, but play Boob and Mullet approved music. The repurcussions are cleaning toilets (Josiah) or the dungeon (prayer closet).

I may not have 19 kids (I chose to use my brain-LOL), but I let my child have outlets with sports (gymnastics, soccer, dance) and music. That's the key-it's what she wants to do, not what I want. I have her listen to all kinds of music (even the ebil Pop music, real Classical and not the crap that Mullet and Boob think is classical, Baroque, country, artists from other countries) as long as the music doesn't have curse words. Boob and Mullet have missed the boat completely. It's not about what they want when trying to develop kids' interests. It's what the kids want (within reason of course).

I'm assuming Christian gospel music is hymn music without the words, like all instrumental.

I took my kid to see Linkin Park & Incubus last night and we both danced. A lot. I think Chester's primordial screams would make Michelle's head explode immeaditely upon hearing it (similar to the way vampires die in True Blood).

I read the title to this thread and the first thing I thought was, "the must have bought "Trust eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeen Obey" from the Maxwells."

Having flash-backs to the periods of time when we could only listen to Gothard approved music.

I've mostly always listened to classical music and not much modern music - I wonder how good their taste is though, really? It seems to be mostly hymns. I quite like hymns too but I don't think the Duggars are particularly musical, I just think they pretend they are because it looks good and wholesome and makes them seem more educated than they actually are. That CD is a bit bland but the tracks I listened to were quite calming.

Also the Beatles are awesome and there's no logical reason not to like them.

Music is one of those things in life that lifts you up.

Awesome grammar, Michelle. Just wait until you're in sixth grade!

some of the kids listen to Christian bluegrass music

Reiths? Zach-Sarah-JD love triangle?

The kitchen counter is full of CDs, particularly instrumental Christian gospel music.

Hundreds of hours of footage and we've NEVER seen this.

When my daughter Josie was in the NICU we played hymns for her continuously

Did not happen.

I think it's important to put the right kinds of things into our lives, whether it's food, literature or music.

TATACA - it's the right thing for you body. You'll never have to shit again!

I've noticed that when the kids are stressed -- they're getting ready to take a test -- they will go to their instruments and just play.

The Arkansas homeschool test, or one of the switched on schoolhouse tests they can take as many times as they want?

My mom and I drove up to my college last week (9 hour drive!). We listened to my iPod the whole way: Nightwish, Emilie Autumn, Within Temptation, Epica, Kamelot. My mom has gone to many concerts with me and she loves Emilie Autumn, but the things Emilie sings about would give Michelle a heart attack! Experience in an insane asylum, abusive psychologists, mental illness, suicide? Music is supposed to be a cathartic experience. Pretending that negative emotions don't exist doesn't do anyone any good.

The pan-flutes and harp sound like stuff I tried to listen to once when I was having very bad mania and insomnia and was desperate for ANY resolution to get sleep! I actually bought that CD (which isn't the one listen, bure as heck sounds a LOT like it!) from a hippie yoga place! :-D

I love Epica! So cool, I don't know many people with similar music tastes. I also love Nightwish. I think it's crazy the Duggars all have the exact same taste in music as if they're a single entity. One of the fun things about music is finding people who like the same kind as you, but the Duggars aren't allowed preferences about anything, other than liking pickles or not. I wonder if any of them really like instrumental hymns.

Both of you have awesome taste in music! I love Nightwish, Emilie Autumn, Within Temptation, etc. I saw WT live once and it was amazing. :)

I forgot I love Within Temptation! I just got into them recently. Have you listened to Delain? They're my favourite female fronted symphonic metal band.

Not to derail the thread, but Delain is pretty good. Esther, did you see WT during their Heart of Everything tour back in 2007? That's when I saw them.

How did y'all find my Pandora stations? ;-)

I think she's confusing "like" with "tolerate because they're terrified of listening to anything else lest it make them sin".

Let's send them some Creed and Nickleback CDs, maybe that sort of crappy music will ease them into the big bad secular world.

No, not Nickelback. No one should be forced to listen to Nickelback, even if they are the Duggars. Perhaps we could start them off with some Kidz Bop?

My mom is a huge music snob and acts like a total b*tch anytime something she doesn't like is played. She's a classical musician and listens only to classical and jazz. Everything else is crap to her. It drives me nuts and led to her acting in an embarrassing in places where the music is too loud for her sensitive constitution. Ugh.

The kids must hear music at stores and in other places, I bet that they are intrigued by the worldly music but have no outlet for it unless they are saavy enough to get pandora or download stuff online and put it on their iphones.

Also, is it me or does the music on the CD mentioned sound completely synthesized? I played the samples and they sound so artificial and grating.

I strongly recommend Susan Werner to FJers. She's awesome and released an agnostic gospel album called "The Gospel Truth". THe woman speaks the truth. I like a lot of her stuff, especially her early stuff, but its her live performances that rock. I'd also strongly recommend Erin McKweon and Kris Delmhorst to you all!!!!

I thought the same thing. It reminds me of playing the mini electric piano that I had as a kid.
