Uh oh...Lousewife is being persecuted on the interwebz

I enjoyed discovering Manboobz and the other heckler-blogs because, without meaning to, they show how fine TTH is by comparison. I don’t know of another site that combines art, politics, world affairs, and social analysis with such cachet. It has the mark of a distinctive personality. This would not be possible unless someone was at the helm. Laura Wood does not post anywhere near all the content I send her. I wouldn’t want her to. She alone is in a position to see all of the comments that come in and to decide how she wants to steer the discussion, and she does so impeccably, with elegance and verve.

And, gasp, there's more

The main reason I don’t take public comments is not to block a slew of hateful comments directed at me personally, though that is an added benefit of doing it this way because most people don’t want to read yards of mindless profanity, but to create civil conversation. If that were something Jen valued, she would send me a civil comment expressing her disagreement with me. I have posted many such comments.

Yards of mindless profanity? Pretty sure that's just fundie speak for "waah someone disagreed with me!"

Never was there a more perfect illustration of a narcissist. Sheesh.

This. Someone certainly thinks highly of herself.

I notice something fascinating here. When Manboobz comments on something they don't like they don't just link to the website in question, but to the post in question. They then tear that post apart section by section, quoting heavily from it. Whereas Thinking Housewife quotes, what? A single stand alone sentence from the blog itself, and part of a comment? Everything else is a paraphrase and a commentary.

To quote GK Chesterton, who the Thinking Housewife at least pretends to admire:

Genuine controversy, fair cut and thrust before a common audience, has become in our special epoch very rare. For the sincere controversialist is above all things a good listener. The really burning enthusiast never interrupts; he listens to the enemy's arguments as eagerly as a spy would listen to the enemy's arrangements.

Instead everyone is going into hydrophobic frenzies about how wonderful it is that the comments section is closed, none of them shows the slightest interest in the actual arguments of the other side, and Laura Wood specifically says: [Laura writes: I cannot take someone who calls himself "Manboobz" seriously. I have not read this site and am not interested in reading it. The name is too much of a barrier to cross.]

And then there is is the voice of the commentaries.

Illuminating post. So WHY (?!?!?!?!?!) is Laura Wood’s blog so exquisitely free from the fecal mendacity that so plagues other sites? How does this happen? This mystery grates upon society’s finer sensibilities like a rasp.

...

To my call for a return to the days of the social stigma I would like to add a call for the renewed and proper use of the word pervert. The image of Archie Bunker is the only one most people get when they hear this word, hence Jen’s lack of understanding. Maybe a proper understanding of perversion would help curb the cultural descent we are currently experiencing. You never hear the terms voyeur or exhibitionist anymore but not so long ago they were criminals of the ickiest and most shameful kind. Does the average young male viewer of porn realize what he is taking part in? Telling him his behavior is perverted might give him pause. Or he may just laugh it off like Jen. Poor Jen. Poor America.

...

My favorite Anglican news site, VirtueOnline, recently migrated from a closely moderated, closed membership comment feature (no hard feelings, btw, even though they permabanned me, lol!) to Disqus. The entire tenor of the site, the discussion, and quality of thought degenerated immediately with typically juvenile name calling, absurdities and pubescent insults.

Surely Laura, you well know that hecklers come with the territory when you’re making people think. Indifferent silence is the real enemy of changing minds and, God willing, that won’t come to TTH any time soon.

All of these three sections are supposed to be from different posters, could you tell? I certainly couldn't. They all have that stilted sense, like the author is trying to write a pastiche of Chesterton and CS Lewis, sort of faux genteel. They pile words upon words, thinking that if they have lots of sentences with long words and that it's all phrased in a slightly old fashioned sort of way that will make their arguments seem weighty and thoughtful. This is not how normal people write. This isn't even how Christian fundamentalists, or even how Catholic Christian fundamentalists write, some of them come close to this, but to have half a dozen people who use the exact same style?

Either everything is written by the same author, or else we're dealing with a hug-box. That is to say a mutual praise society where no criticism is ever allowed to intrude. But even for a hug-box the writing styles are creepily similar. Also even for a fundamentalist hugbox, I would think that at least *one* of the people there would be able to make actual arguments.

I am really starting to think that everything, including the commentaries, are written by the same author.

Uh, ThatThinkingHouseWife, nobody's persecuting you. If you and fundies like you had their way, women wouldn't be allowed to share their opinions in public (including you, honey, you're not a special snowflake 'cause you preach "womanhood" whataver the hell that means), opinions would be censored/deleted online, and people would be put in jail and or killed for their opinions; which is the true definition of persecution. People are not persecuting you; they're critizing you. Grow up; realize that blogs are public, and don't whine when people disagree with you, honey. Cultures around the world have different views than whites the West does on feminity.

Not only that, every person has their own view of beauty and feminity. You got that? Kthx bye. :P

Manboobz is like the greatest website ever written.

+1

I follow Dave on Twitter too. He's generally nice & actually modest, unlike the faux modesty of fundies

QFT. It's a refreshing wallow in snark, feminism, and kittens. The comments are (as opposed on on any other place in the series of tubes) my favorite part of the site!
