The exact quote was "Obama is a muslim who is anti-farming, anti-military , and anti U.s. -we hate him" Since when did Obama become anti-farm? There are just no words for this. He already stuck his foot in his mouth last year when compared Obama to HItler. Monday NIght Football fired him.

A friend of mine (who is also a completely crazy conspiracy theorist) is convinced that Obama is a Muslim and this makes him a bad president.

I dont care what religion the president is as long as there is still freedom of religion, and laws are not made in favour of one particular religion, as it doesnt really matter as not all Muslims are terrorists.

The Republicans and Tea Partiers (I hate that term, it's ruined actual tea parties for me :() most likely know this year is a lost cause so they're throwing all the crazy/ridiculous crap at the wall and seeing what sticks. Between this and the "you can't get pregnant from rape" and the Chick-Fil-A hijinks, it all makes sense.

As for what they point to as him doing "Muslim" things, my dad's parents are hardcore Republicans and forward my mom all the crazy email forwards about how Obama is a Muslim from Africa who wants to turn us into a godless society and Michelle is the modern day Marie Antoinette. I don't even know if they believe most of it - they just send it on. She got one saying he was spotted without his wedding ring because "Muslims don't wear jewelry during Ramadan." Went to Snopes, saw it was bullshit. It's now a routine that whenever we get an email from my grandma, we head to Snopes to verify heh.

The Obama is a Muslim thing is actually interesting when you look beyond the fact that it is obviously untrue.

First, the values that the average conservative American associates with Islam are also popular among the religious right. One would think they would hope and pray for a Muslim president, as they see Muslims at least. Modesty, sexual virtue, family values aka kill teh gheyz, Old Testament theocracy, etc. These are things that the average American associates with Islam and also things that the Republican party espouses.

Second, there is nothing about Obama's voting record that suggests he is okay with Shariah law. He has consistently come out in support of women. His relationship with his wife and daughters seems very egalitarian. Again, I am comparing Obama to the typical conservative American view of Islam, not to actual Muslims. I would be more inclined to believe the President is a closet atheist or agnostic; in fact, I kinda suspect that.

Third, if he was Muslim, why would it matter? There is no Constitutional limit on the religion of the president. It is not relevant. It is the least important faux fact about Obama. It really should not matter.

I went to a discussion group on Sunday morning. We discuss everything topical that a person can imagine. One of the women said that she was going to see Michelle Obama. An older woman in the group groaned and made some very negative comments. This is an older Jewish lady who considers herself a feminist of the first order. She is pro-choice and has no problem with gay people. However, she absolutely believes that Obama is a Muslim Jew-Hater and she is going to vote for Romney because...her words...."America First. I will not vote for a Muslim."

I was appalled. I turned to her and said that was exactly what good Germans said about the Jews in Europe when Hitler came into power. Shame on her.

The thing is that she could not see the hate in herself. She is absolutley convinced that this is true and that it disqualifies him as President. Many Jewish people feel that the fact that Obama tries to be more even handed on the Israel/Middle East issues that he hates Israel and wants to see her destroyed. You cannot get this out of their heads.

Me too, although, I didn't have my daughter yet. I am so glad her first real memories are of a president who looks like her.

All of this Muslim not born in the country is just noise to distract from harder campaign issues. What about Romney and Ryan's lack of/mistakes on their financial disclosures? Who "forgets" that his wife gets a 5 million dollar inheritance? Riight.

Why isn't anyone talking about the real issues: Do we want a president named Mittens, who has a really nasty wife? (she has MS, but, because she has hers, i.e. tons of money and insurance up the fanny, thinks those of us who don't should just suffer? Fuck you and your race horses, Annie!). And Ryan's wife was a pharmaceutical lobbyist, yeah, she's not going to be on the side of big Pharm! I realize I am talking about their wives, but First Ladies don't just bake cookies. Eleanor Roosevelt ran the country for awhile, and look at Hillary.
