Doug Tells You Who to Vote For--MEN!

Capt. Dougie's lists the desired traits for an elected official, according to the doctrinate of Doug The Bible:

1. Men who are able

2. Men who fear God

3. Men committed to truth

4. Men who hate covetousness.

Have you noticed a theme yet? Dougie thinks not, so he calls it our for you

5. Men

Just in case you are confused he clarifies:

The Hebrew word translated “men†in this text refers to males as opposed to females. The generic term for mankind, which would include women, is not used here, but rather, the gender specific word for men. If the choice of words means anything, then it is necessary to conclude that God intended that only men be chosen for the office of civil ruler.

6. Men who are wise

7. Men who are understanding

8.Men who are known

Doug Phillips is a Tool. A big fucking tool. (Who is very obsessed with men.)

Doug Phillips is a tool. Though I do prefer it when sexist people are open about their sexism and don't try to hide it or fool themselves into thinking they're not sexist. If there's one thing I like about Doug Phillips, it's that he destroys his chances of being taken seriously by anyone outside the cult every time he opens his mouth.

Personally, I am so grateful that Doug Phillips cleared that up for me. Silly little me was going to vote on issues next time around, but that makes it so much easier! May his anaconda wisdom forever point to Peter Sippy-Cup Bradrick the path of righteousness. Rejoice, lowly womenfolk, who need a manly man who tells us what's what! Rejoice!

P.S.: Doug Phillips is a tool

Believe it or not, I'm in the process of writing a booklet about this very topic (ETA: as it relates to Biblical leadership). Here is an excerpt concerning how some churches handle the Biblical qualifications for leadership:

The term Modern Church will refer to those bodies that treat the Bible as a sacred text but not as a literal account of history or a source for unalterable law. Members and leaders of modern churches tend to read the Bible through a historical-critical lens, claiming that certain Biblical precepts – for example, the prohibition against women preaching to mixed groups – were applicable only at certain times and in certain contexts.

The term Fundamentalist Church will refer to those bodies that believe the Bible is not only a sacred text but also an infallible source of historical information containing an unalterable list of precepts meant to govern human behavior for all time. Members and leaders of these churches tend to view the Bible as a fundamental and foundational set of documents, essentially dictated without error by the Holy Spirit.

And now, for Doug's benefit, because his short list is a self-serving failure, I have provided a more complete set of criteria (of which having a penis is among the least important):

MICAH 6:8 requires that Believers...

-- Do justice

-- Love mercy

-- Walk humbly with God

JAMES 2:8-12 requires that Believers...

-- Love their neighbors as themselves

-- Show no partiality based on economic class

-- Speak and act with humility, as one who is to be judged by the Law of Liberty

LUKE 10:27-28 requires that Believers love God with all one's heart, soul, strength, and mind.

The special requirements, good for all Believers but imperative in leaders, are as follows:

1 TIMOTHY 3 says a leader must be...

-- Blameless

-- The husband of one wife

-- Temperate

-- Sober-minded

-- Well-behaved

-- Hospitable

-- Able to teach

-- Not a hard drinker

-- Non-violent (nor given to fighting and quarrels)

-- Neither greedy nor covetous

-- Gentle

-- Able to govern his own house, such that his family is well-behaved

-- Experienced as a Christian and perhaps even as a theologian (so, not a novice)

-- Able to behave in such a manner that even people outside his church community – and this includes the non-believers who bear witness to his conduct - will recognize his fitness to lead

TITUS 1:5-9 says much the same – to wit, that a leader must be...

-- Above reproach

-- A husband to one wife

-- The parent of well-behaved children

-- Not given to self-will

-- Not quick-tempered

-- Not addicted to alcohol

-- Not given to fighting

-- Not given to greed or to a willingness for dishonest gain

-- Hospitable

-- Loving of what is good

-- Sensible

-- Just

-- Devout

-- Self-controlled

-- A sound and knowledgeable teacher

Phillips' own short list - essentially "no girls allowed," and little else - is self-serving, obviously. That is why he failed to include all the other Biblical qualifications for leadership.

He has demonstrated greed, a lack of compassion (for example, in his comments on ectopic pregnancy, among many others), and a wholly unbecoming dynastic ambition. Moreover, his costume parties are examples of dishonest historical revisionism – not to mention a waste of resources.

If he or any of his cronies were subjected to the actual Biblical test for leadership, almost all of them would fail. In fact, most of the fundie preachers we discuss here, regardless of their loyalty, would fall well short.

Even if being male is a requirement for the pastorate, it's far from the only one. Some of the “pastors†we discuss here have no formal training, no self-control, no compassion whatsoever, no demonstrated hospitality...it goes on and on.

ETA: If qualifications for the pastorate were also meant to choose secular leaders, then Deborah would never have been a judge in Israel. Obviously, not all the qualifications for church leadership were ever meant to apply beyond that sphere - even in a situation where criminal and religious law were essentially one thing.

He ignores all of the kick-ass women leaders in the Bible. And because of cultural/societal expectations, they had to really shine in order to get a place in history.

I agree with Doug (I feel sick saying that) that a politician's character is important. One of the things I really like about Obama is his character. He is a good person. Romney, on the other hand, is a snake and I would have a hard time voting for him if he agreed with me on every single issue. I would like to have honest people with integrity running the country, although I generally have to vote based on issues because the issues are very important also. In general, I think most people with good character will agree with me. I have had some discussions with Tea Party members that scare me. They are not disillusioned by the movement, they really hate everyone who is not wealthy and white, and feel no altruism whatsoever. So I guess that having good character by my definition usually leads to agreeing with me on major issues.

I seriously wonder if something happened in his childhood that caused him to hate women, LGBT people and their supporters, and those he views as "anti-Christian" so much. This much hate isn't healthy.

His mother is Roman Catholic and refuses to convert to Reformed theology. So not only is she in thrall to heretical beliefs (if not a heretic herself), she is rejecting the authority of the males in her family. I can only imagine what a constant source of frustration this is to Doug. We just saw him going after Mormons on his blog, but for personal reasons, he is unable to do the same to Catholics, or at least not to the extent he'd like to. Not like, say, Tim Bayly does. And I do think he has anger about that.

He called his sister out for her determination to go to grad school and have a career as an opera singer. He told her she was going to hell. She has now basically divorced the whole family.

I admire her and I think she has a wonderful career ahead of her.

as far as her brother:::::

Sadly, Doug's opinion is one commonly shared by many in the rest of the world. Many nations may mouth the platitude of equal rights, but most will never consider a women in high ranking position of power unless she has some particular predigree (i.e father/brother was well known and she is the only one left to carry on the family tradition). The sad fact is many people in this day and age still see women as the weaker vessel. Doug's comments makes him unpopular in this country, but it only makes him normal in many parts of the rest of the world.

Yup. Not too surprising that someone who thinks women shouldn't vote also thinks they shouldn't be voted for.
