Yes

(Adding more words because I remembered I'm not supposed to do one word replies, but I was just trying to be funny and don't want to alter my original one word answer.)

Did anyone see Lawson attempt to sing let it go at the hospital?

That was bad!  Pretty much every four year old girl was singing that a year or so ago and they knew all the words, too.

Probably Lawson has free internet access and watches whatever he wants. He can even hide a private phone in the car, who knows. He has money and travels alone (or with naif little sisters). Come on, Josh Duggar was supposed to be internet-controlled by his wife and we all know the truth about it. Don't get me wrong, I'm not comparing both man, but I mean that if Lawson has curiosity, he is probably able to watch fundie-banned films/webs. And who could blame him for that! Not saying he's watching porn or anything bad, but even watching mainstream webs and films would be a sin in that family.

He's still not courting and I wonder if he's looking for someone different from his environtment (maybe a fundie lite girl or an upper class girl?). Or maybe he's truly romantic and waits for the princess charming. But it's surprising he's not courting, I mean, he's young and he's not allowed to even kiss a girl. It must be very hard for a person his age. Well, maybe he just wants to be alone, of course.

Any of this could definitely be possible, but I really think he hasn't courted yet because he has no real reason to. He's got a pretty sweet deal as it is, way more freedom than most fundies get. A lot of their type get married young because it's the only way that they are treated like adults, but Lawson is one of the very few fundies who seems to be treated like an adult already. So why get saddled with a wife and kids when you could be galavanting off to Nashville?

I think the reason he gets treated the way he does is because he was the Bank of Lawson for so long.  It's a lot harder to tell your grown adult child what to do when they're buying the food to keep you from starving.  At least I would think so.

This. One hundred percent this.  His parents might be doing better but his adult siblings still borrow money from him whenever they want to do something.

Oh no, I definitely agree that his penis affords him a large degree of autonomy and in a world where Wifi is now standard in hotels, he's no doubt had the opportunity to access uncensored internet. D

i was just being sarcastic about even a cartoon character probably being considered too NIKE!!! for Gothard world.

Although I'm actually not too surprised he isn't courting. Right now, he has about as much freedom as someone can expect to have in his world. He gets to ride his horse, travel around and do something he likes (music) while enjoying D list celebrity status. Once he starts courting, there will be an expectation to be engaged within a year and then a wedding pretty close behind......and that means blessings. While in their world, child rearing is Wimmins Work so he'd not have to give up things completely, I there will be a bit more of an expectation to 'settle down and grow up' once he is courting/married. As much as I diss his ego, he does seem to be good with kids judging by his nieces/nephews and he'll probably make a decent Dad, but for now, I think he's happy being a 'cool uncle' and getting to do largely whatever he wants while his siblings raise kids.

Freedom is not free  y'all.  He still cannot fornicate, which at his age is kinda what makes life worth living.

It just makes me so sad for all of them.  Sexual repression is so damaging.

  • 2 weeks later...

check out this guy Emily Ann is performing with next.....this dude is only 18!

This makes me sad for Lawson, because he has already come leaps and bounds over him and he's barely an adult yet...isn't Lawson like 23?
Also, Emily seems much more at ease with this guy, who is Christian but also is much more liberal (especially hanging out with a bunch of ladies on his IG)

I'm not sure why i bothered to make a post about this, I guess I saw it and it made me embarrassed and sad for Lawson, stuck out in Rocky Top writing breakup songs, when he could be living the dream in Nashville  (imagine if he had been able to get a job and his own apartment??! or even taken Trace with him to do trick riding... there are SO many possibilities, all of which i'm guessing this boy Zach will have) if he hadn't been discouraged and enmeshed for so long that it's likely never to happen. :/

I know we snark on Lawson a lot for showing off, his ego, and such, but I feel for him. He seems to really want to stand out in that family, pushing this music career and doing something that sets him apart from them all...not being a pastor, or a preacher, or going on a a missions trip, he likes playing music and in another life, he could have had voice lessons, guitar lessons, gone to a music school/college, and been exposed to more venues that would have allowed him to learn how the business works, but he's taught to be content with a couple of songs which are up in the charts on youtube....playing in his parents church,  and carefully orchestrated visits to Nashville to record with Andy Leftwich, a close friend of the family (AKA can you say accountability partner!?!?) lol

*sigh* and all his brothers rag on him for writing breakup songs' all the time, and i know it's all in good fun and they are just joking around, but i find it a bit sad, all these repressed feelings he cleary has, joking about never being married....and let's not forget that he essentially supported the family and paid for groceries for a long time and gave everyone loans, including his own parents!!!!
I would want to tell him that it's okay to be selfish , and go pursue your dreams!!! He has no obligation to his family, but the enmeshment has ruined that ability to think about himself as merely just Lawson, the country singer. Yet his actions say otherwise. He's reaching for more and they won't let him.

It's kind of funny how so many country songs are about longing for a simpler life or being nostalgic for small town days and values. I grew up in a small town and now live near Nashville now (and spend lots of time there working, socializing, shopping, etc.). I much prefer the pace and space of country life to the city life, which I only enjoy in bursts.

Maybe Lawson sees himself as more genuine and true to himself staying in Rocky Top.

After all, Nashville is booming with what we like to call "transplants" of people trying to make it big, many of them faking a southern accent in their songs (living up to portrayals of the city like ones in the ridiculous show Nashville). I see how he's not as talented a singer/songwriter, but if he can travel to Nashville occasionally as needed, it's not necessary that he live there. Some fans may even like that he doesn't. I have lots of friends who currently play or have played music professionally, and it's mainly about touring, anyway. Sure, you can make money playing at the same Nashville bars ever weekend, but no one will take you seriously if you do that. A lot of bands that you hear of being from Nashville are actually from smaller towns in Tennessee. Kings of Leon, for example, are actually from Mt. Juliet.

Being sexually repressed just isn't healthy. Lawson seems like he would enjoy having a partner, if not a longtime wife. He doesn't strike me as a guy who wants kids right now, if ever, and it makes me sad that he grew up with such restrictive values.

I sorry. I don't feel sorry for Lawson.  I see no reason why he couldn't have taken music classes at Crown College just as Erin did. He could have sung in the college choir too. Crown also has student vocal groups that tour and perform at fundy churches. I don't think he is trying very hard with his music career.  Good looking country boys with a pleasant enough voice are a dime a dozen in Nashville. Taking selfies on your horse doesn't make you a better singer.

tl; dr: Lawson could be doing a whole lot more to further his so called music career within his fundy world.

Not just that, but he's an adult. If he wanted to get out he could. It wouldn't be fun or easy and there could be consequences that make him reluctant to leave... But if he wanted out of the lifestyle he could probably make it happen at this point. Same with the other adult offspring in the Bates and Duggar families.

Do I still feel bad for his shitty upbringing and the lack of opprtunities he has been presented throughout life? Yes. Absolutely. But he's an adult who can choose differently if he really wants to. So my sympathy for him - and all the adult offspring - is more limited than it is for the still minor kids.

Definitely agree with you here!

good point, I guess i what i was feeling for Lawson was more second-hand embarassment.

You're right, the minor kids are much more vulnerable than all the young adults.

Emily Ann and Zach Seabaugh are really good friends. They met when they were both on The Voice together. They were both coached by Blake Shelton.  I'm not surprised that they do shows together. When I saw them on the show, they seemed like very normal teenagers always joking and having fun. And for those who didn't know, Emily Ann actually got 2nd place/runner-up in her season of The Voice. Zach made it very far too. Here are my favorite performances from them

Lawson looks pretty bad compared to these two. They seem like really talented, hard-working kids with a real spark. Lawson is worlds behind them and probably doesn't even know it. Can you imagine him on the voice? :my_biggrin:

Lawson is mediocre, verging on bad. He could be good if he put some actual work into himself. Voice coaching, stage coaching, etc. I don't think he's ever going to look into that though. I have a feeling he thinks he is great as is.

Lawson's singing is pathetic, and he has an over inflated ego. He will never make it in the music business.

I feel sorry for Lawson. Compared to the effort Amy put into her singing, he is running himself into the ground! He has sang the national anthem at a few sports games, played on a few regional radio and tv stations, has published cds/songs and does seem to play at hospitals and various fairs and churches every few months. He did that whole vocal-coach thing for the show too (though people in the know said she gave some pretty bad advice)

Plus he does seem to either lug his guitar around a lot and almost always has headphones dangling off him, so listens to music a lot too.

TL;DR for a fundie NOT in a musical dog and pony show family, he is putting in a lot of effort, for a professional musician, totally pathetic....

I'd love to see the ego come crashing back to earth when not one judge turns for him.

He CAN, he just has to be very careful and very discrete.

Oh Lord Jesus, I just youtubed Lawson Bates. This is ear torture, they could use this in place of water boarding, I could only stand about 25 seconds of his actual singing. The song its self wasn't bad, his singing was. Now did he right that or was it a cover? I have no idea my knowledge of Country Music begins and ends with Johnny Cash. If he DID right it, he could have a career as a song writer maybe a studio musician, with a little more practice, but a singer, nope.

Arguably, he even has MORE opportunity than others to get out, especially the women in the cult.

ITA. Lawson is just another Miss Raquel. He wants the fame without doing any of the hard work. He could do a lot more, but chooses not to.
