Raising Righteous & Rowdy Girls (Oh boy, a new misogynist!)

So I was watching the Victoria Jackson show (!) and She had this guy Doug Giles on. I don't think he's been discussed on FJ before. He's not a fundie, but certainly fundie lite. A pastor, he's also written a horrible book. He seems to dislike women so much he raises his girls like boys - huntin', ass-kickin boys. One of his daughters was the 'prostitute' in the ACORN scandal.

Here's a nice little 2 mintues hate from him - directed at insecure dads.

Here is the VJ show apperance:

From his site:

The Culture War Is On, Dad, and Your Little Daughter Is In the Culture Coarsening Zombie’s Crosshairs!

What is Giles talking about? Check out these questions he has for dads regarding their daughters …

How would you like it if your girl were one of Charlie Sheen’s “Tiger Blood†girlfriends or one of Hef’s 18-year-old bulimic chicks with 32EEE fake ta-tas who’ll bump uglies with an 85-year-old creeper just to be on TV?

How would you like it if your daughter were the one-out-of-four sexually active teens living with a sexually transmitted disease at this moment?

How would you feel if your daughter went off to college a gracious girl with traditional values and graduated four years later a nerve-grating, radical socialist who thinks Chavez is Sa-Weet?

Or, worse yet, what would you think if she entered college a nice Christian and exited a burka donning radical Muslim?

What if your young lass morphed into an indolent ward of the state who indiscriminately spits out babies like Tic Tacs (with different dudes) simply to stay on the government’s dole?

Moreover, how would your daughter handle a school shooting, the fallout from a terrorist attack or a natural disaster? I know, it’ll never happen to her, eh?

Lastly, what would your daughter do if confronted by a rapist intending to kill her after he’s finished with her?

Let the snaking commence.....

(Doug seems to be a great name for misogynists, BTW.)

I hate it when people try to sound "hip" in their writing.

WTF does Culture Coarsening Zombie’s Crosshairs even mean?

This guy is in for a shock when one or more of his daughters comes out of the closet.

You will learn in the next 150 finger-burning pages how to teach your daughters to fight, shoot guns, sense BS, be classy, despise anti-intellectualism, be visionaries, party without going Britney, the value hunting and the outdoors, the importance of traditional convictions, and how to avoid the date from hell.

Sounds like he's trying to make another Bristol Palin, as if we need another. And I don't think I'd want to read something that will burn my fingers.

Here's an Amazon Review:

I will teach my daughters to hunt, defend herself, think freely, not dress like Lady Caca or whatever her name is.

The book says to do that. It even encourages the reading of philosophy and the classics. That's great. It makes good points - "teach your daughter to drink for the right reasons" for example. Right on.

Another point: Raise your daughter to be "healthily suspicious." Well, be suspicious of this book.

Giles black rappers "Darwinian-throwbacks" i.e. monkeys. Seriously? I won't teach my daughter to be a racist. I also don't want to read about how stupid "Dhimmocrats" are every sentence. I didn't buy this book for political rants. I'm pretty middle of the line (or a "squishy wuss" according to Giles). 75% of this book is political rambling. He calls Islam "whacked out" and says we should be free to insult it. Many, many more examples. I will teach my daughter to respect all people, and all religions. That's a good dad's job.

This guy thinks he's pretty hilarious but his writing 'style' is so hard to read because it's so pompous. "Don't be a pirate hooker" is not humor. I like his points, but I won't raise my daughters to be brainwashed by a book like this. Why couldn't he just stick to the point -- how to raise a tough girl? Probably because raising a tough girl is apparently done in one way, his way.

The real point is on page 61.

1 Embrace our faith like never before. 2 Cheer on traditional values... 3) Applaud our own culture. 4) Quit being squishy wusses. 5) Spit out babies and raise them in the Judeo-Christian worldview. 6) Tell foreign invaders to come here correctly or go back to their sucky countries. 7) Revolt against immoral vomit.

So the real point of this book is actually not raising righteous & rowdy girls, it's raising a girl to grow up and be Sarah Palin.

Bottom line - The only people who will like this book are the people who already think this way. I hope their girls will grow up to think for themselves.

Here's an interview with the younger Giles daughter:

http://campusprogress.org/articles/hann ... oves_guns/

Earlier I heard you mention you don't identify as a feminist.

No.

Could you explain why?

I believe in gender roles. I believe women are not equal as men and I believe it should stay that way because women are very special in what they do—what they're called to do. Men are special in what they're called to do. If you just look at the way we're built, we're built in a very different way and I think that says a lot about the way we can perform. I don't know about you, but I don't want to be equal to a man. I want to be different.

Yeah and that's a real shame, because everytime I hear the name Doug on its own my mind still takes me back to those blissful years of watching that adorable preteen boy on Nickelodeon belting out "Patti, you're the pickle in my coleslaw, Patti, you're the sugar in my tea..."

Here's an Amazon Review:

That's pretty telling. Sounds like this guy is no different from our usual fundies except he has no problem with swearing and doesn't dance around the fact that he's being very insulting and bigoted toward other cultures. At least the trash is out in the open and most people hopefully won't gobble it up.

Yeah, because it's not like women ever hunted or used guns before this guy  This is the very reason I don't like coding activities as masculine or feminine in the first place. Plenty of women throughout history have hunted to feed themselves and their families, or used guns for protection and it wasn't anything remarkable. And plenty of men have sewn their own clothes and knitted their own socks.

This one's a real peach--he and Mark Driscoll should get together for the ultimate fundie bromance.

One of Doug's daughters is conservative activist Hannah Giles, James O'Keefe's partner in the dishonest undercover-camera Acorn sting. Yes, the same James O'Keefe that tried to lure CNN's Abbie Boudreau onto a rape boat. Hannah's not as creepy as O'Keefe but appears to be a bit dim. Still, she doesn't get her face into the media as much as O'Keefe, and for that I'm grateful.
