I'm starting to brainstorm what to cook for Thanksgiving 2014. We are doing a potluck with the neighbors. 10 adults, 6 kids. I'm cooking the turkey (because we get one from work every year and I'm kind of a control freak when it comes to producing an amazing looking/tasting turkey) and have volunteered for a kid friendly app, and a side. Kid friendly app, because half of the 6 kids belong to me, and they're horrible children who don't eat anything. I'm thinking mini weenies in Coke and BBQ sauce (so sugary gross, but the kids LOVE THEM) for the app. Crab puffs are also super easy to throw together too, so that's also an option. Sides is where I'm stuck. I have to do a non starchy vegetable dish- so no potatoes, sweet potatoes or corn. Give me suggestions! No food allergies or restrictions in the group.

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2016/jun/28/turkey-airport-explosions-ataturak-istanbul I don't even know what to say anymore. I really wouldn't want to think that there are more victims, more distraught families, that I need to check my cousin's bf is alive and well because he goes there twice a week. We can't go on like this.

Sorry mods, please merge if this has already been posted! Terror in Turkey: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/europe/turkey/12094350/Explosion-in-Istanbuls-central-square-causes-casualties.html And Indonesia: http://www.theguardian.com/world/live/2016/jan/14/multiple-explosions-gunshots-reported-in-jakarta-rolling-report Both, apparently due to IS. My thoughts are with the victims' families and friends.

Turkey Shoots Down Russian Warplane Near Syrian Border Turkey shot down a Russian warplane because they claim the Russian plane entered their airspace. Russia denies this allegation. It seems that if it did happen, it was very brief and the plane landed in Syria. Turkey is Part of NATO, so this complicates things for sure. Putin is obviously angry. Thoughts?

Bilgin Çiftçi, a Turkish doctor, made the meme shown below, and shared it on Facebook. It was appreciated by quite a few people, and was widely shared. http://www.theguardian.com/world/2015/dec/02/turkish-court-asks-gollum-experts-if-erdogan-comparison-insult http://foreignpolicy.com/2015/12/02/erdogan-on-gollum-meme-we-hates-it-we-hates-it-forever/ http://www.news.com.au/finance/business/media/man-facing-jail-over-gollum-meme/news-story/3e862063b53c29fa61dd9658dd2dbc17 However, once the President Recep Tayyip Erdogan caught wind of it, his lawyers were instructed to sue Dr Çiftçi for insulting the President, which could result in a prison sentence of up to two years for the good doctor. Apparently, Erdogan's presidency has been known for the prosecution and imprisonment of several journalists. The trial has reached an impasse, as the judge is unable to decide whether Gollum is indeed an evil character and therefore an insult, or a somewhat sympathetic one, a character whose mind is imprisoned by the power of the ring, but who still shows occasional flashes of humanity. So, the trial, farcical in my opinion, has been adjourned, while a panel of experts, including academics, are assembled to discuss this very crucial issue. Dr Çiftçi was fired from his job back in October as a result of the charges brought against him. It will come as no surprise that the internets have exploded with Erdogan/Gollum memes. Mr Erdogan would have been better off just ignoring it for the joke it was, rather than behaving as he has, and possibly ruining a man's life over something so simple. Somebody is feeling preciousssssssss.... Thoughts?
