The Untravelling of 2020, Entry 1

So. 2020 happened. I think we all know that. Travelling, especially international, has become nigh impossible. In the past 28 years, since I was born, I have been to many, many places both here in Finland and abroad. Looking forward to 2021 I don't much will change eihter. I've minimised international travel ever since I moved back to Finland six years ago both due to environmental and health reasons - it's extremely emotionally and physically taxing. I had planned that in 2020, I'd finally do some big travelling again, like visit Costa Rica together with my lovely sister for he
  2. I swear, mine gets longer by the day. I want to do Paris and Vietnam and Thailand. Sweden is on the list to see where my grandmother's family came from. Part of me wants to do Belize or Costa Rica, but snorkling would be something I'd want to do there, and that would require getting contacts. (I am soooo fricking blind).
  3. Ok, so Washington DC isn't the most exotic place or anything, but I was supposed to go this past winter and had to cancel due to the government shut down. Mainly just doing the Smithsonian. I'm a sucker for musuems. Natural History, American History, African American History, Freer, American Indian History and the Zoo. Also going to do the Library of Congress. Plus an extra day where I might do the Newseum, or anything I missed. This will be my first ever solo vacation. I'm staying in a hostel, since I actually feel safer not all alone in a hotel room. (Work conferences, I do okay, becaus
  4. So I am supposed to go to DC at the start of February. Currently on a countdown to deciding if I will cancel it. 1) I was supposed to go to the Smithsonian. That was 80% of my plans/goal. One of the biggest non-Federal attractions, the Spy Musuem, is closed as well, for renovations. 2) Even if there were things to do, I don't want to deal with the uncertainty of flying right now. Slow security lines, terminals closed for lack of security staff, etc. Obviously, in terms of impact, it's pretty minor. But it still bums me out. I may take a staycation, do some local things I don't normally d
  5. I booked this trip for late December / early January. It'll be a chance to escape from an Iowa winter. And depending on how the elections go, also from all the teabilly fornicate sticks who are either celebrating or are in mourning. (Hopefully in mourning over all the poor Republicans out of jobs, and the one big fornicate face who will be soon).....
  6. Of course I don't believe this at all. From what I read some Americans are assholes and the culture is different. Just another myth. Anyone from France or visited France? Any tips you can give me? What hotels to stay in? What to visit? Also any good French learning programs? And pleas tell me what no to do/do when interacting with a person from France. Thanks. Yes I'm thinking about planning a trip to France
  7. If your airfare and accommodations were covered, what is the absolute bare minimum you'd need per day to get by in the following places? Need, not want. Going into Buckingham Palace or into the Louvre or into whatever attractions there are in san Francisco or Germany, might be nice, but aren't needs. This is the barest of necessities to get by, and everything else is gravy. Just the minimum. 1) London 2) Rome 3) Stockholm 4) Paris 5) San Francisco 6) Aukland 7) Sydney
  8. Do we not have a travel subforum? Or am I too dense to find it? Anyway, we have been thinking about going to Greece for years and always abandon it because it it is overwhelming. There are too many options and we can't pin it down. We have taken a huge step and have booked our flight in and out of Athens in May. We figure we will spend last two nights there just so we are safely back close to airport and will do the obligatory trips to the Acropolis and Olympia. That leaves us nine nights. We are thinking about Hydra for three and the rest in Santorini but we really have no idea. We don't w
  9. Saw this on CNN where Scotland now has the NC500 and CNN thinks it'll become a classic; cnn.com/2016/06/13/travel/scotland-north-coast-road-trip-nc500/index.html Getting out the ol' bucket list database and adding an entry to it right now....
  10. Now that I have made Boss 1 and Boss 2 laugh at my stories of eating with Boss 3 (they have both had the experience of traveling with this man) it is time to share it with you. We all know that Boss 3 has an attachment to certain chain restaurants. it borders on legendary. We have not had a Chik-Fil-A here that long and the staff already knows him. One coworker has vowed never to eat at Chik-fil-a without him. We flew to Connecticut on Monday. Tuesday breakfast at the hotel was an egg casserole. It had hashbrowns mixed in. It wasn't bad. He didn't eat it, called it Quiche an
