Anyone else here watching the new Shōgun series on Hulu/FX? I've been watching it for the past few weeks now and have enjoyed it. As much as I enjoyed the 1980 miniseries, the 2024 miniseries is far more gritty and more realistic. From time to time I do miss Richard Chamberlin as the original John Blackthorne but Cosmo Jarvis is a good Blackthorne as well. And the new Blackthorne has quite the library of insults. "Milk dribbling fuck smear" for example. I've already filed that one away for future use regarding fuck face.

Thought I'd start a thread for all things Star Trek. I like Discovery and look forward to each new episode. That said I was thinking that if I was in charge of Discovery when it was first made I would have made time travel and section 31 verboten. As in no shows being done about either in any form. They're both crutches that the writers use to the show's detriment.

I just discovered that this Saturday will be the 30th Anniversary of The Simpsons episode Last Exit to Springfield, which is considered one of the best of the whole series. You know, the one that gave us such moments as; Dental Plan! Lisa needs braces! Dental Plan! Lisa needs braces! Dental Plan! Lisa needs braces! Where's my burrito?! Where's my burrito?! Where's my burrito?! OW! We can't bust heads like we used to. But we have our ways. One trick is to tell stories that don't go anywhere. Like the time I caught the ferry to Shelbyville. I needed a new heel for my shoe. So I decided to go to Morganville, which is what they called Shelbyville in those days. So I tied an onion to my belt, which was the style at the time. Now, to take the ferry cost a nickel, and in those days, nickels had pictures of bumblebees on 'em. "Gimme five bees for a quarter," you'd say. Now where were we... oh yeah. The important thing was that I had an onion on my belt, which was the style at the time. They didn't have any white onions, because of the war. The only thing you could get was those big yellow ones... When solving a difficult problem either at work or in my personal life, I really use that last one. As in "I can't bust heads like I used to, but I have my ways!"

YouTube just suggested this video clip to me... It's from the February 26, 1970 episode. Yeah, my urban dictionary corrupted brain went right to oh Ernie's gonna buy an eight ball now.

Past couple weeks it's been nice enough to spend time out on the patio. My condo's previous owner left a 31" TV behind. I got a basic Roku for it since it didn't have anything built in like a lot of TVs do now. I had it in my bedroom for a while but lately I've been taking it out to the patio and watching TV - especially MST3K out on the patio. Along with Big Lebowski, RiffTrax, and other mind vaporizing entertainment. Nice thing about TVs now is smaller ones don't weigh all that much so I can leave it by the door when I'm not home or if it's going to rain into the patio. If I do get a larger living room TV anytime soon I'll move the existing living room TV into the bedroom then keep using the gift TV out on the patio for now.

So the official trailer for Netflix’s live action adaptation of the influential, incredible, groundbreaking anime Cowboy Bebop dropped today. I cried. It looks amazing. I recognize so many different scenes and characters. With the anime’s original composer, Yoko Kanno, and director, Shinichiro Watanabe, involved I have high hopes. See you Space Cowboy… on November 19!

Does anyone else LOVE Schitt’s Creek? The name of the show prevented me learning anything about it or watching it, but once I gave it a chance, I was absolutely hooked. I’ve never been much of a fan of Eugene Levy and Catherine O’Hara, but their roles here totally showcase their immense talent. All of the characters are hilarious and Seasons 3 and 4 has the best romance storyline that I’ve ever watched. If you like shows like Arrested Development, The Office, Parks & Rec, etc., please give Schitt’s a shot. It brings me so much joy!

I'm just curious if anyone watched a show "Call the Midwife"? The first episode aired on PBS in the US tonight, it's about a midwife in the East End of London in the 1950s. In the first episode one of the clients is having her 25th kid, I couldn't help but think "take THAT Michelle!!!"

WhatWouldJohnCrichtonDo? posted a blog entry in Other People's Sense and Nonsense (and a bit from me)
"Television is an invention that permits you to be entertained in your living room by people you wouldn't have in your own home." David Frost I have a love/hate relationship with television, like a lot of people do (I imagine). It's such a great window on the world, but it also presents such a skewed view of the world. Plus, it can be a giant time-sucking vortex, some days. "I find television very educating. Every time somebody turns on the set I go into the other room and read a book." Groucho Marx Of course, Groucho is the same one who said: "Outside of a dog a book is a man's best friend. Inside of a dog it's too dark to read." Groucho Marx
