    All Things My Lady Bibliophile

Ah, My Lady Bibliophile. A homeschool graduate with remarkably good grammar compared to some of the fundies we snark on, and yet her reading comprehension skills wouldn't pass muster on the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test. She reads and reviews (or sometimes just reviews) all manner of books to guide her followers towards godly fiction and away from dangerous stories. I'm personally a fan of her Austen reviews, such as this one for Northanger Abbey which fails to mention that Henry Tilney is appalled at the way men in his culture treat women as playthings or this one for Sense and Sensibility that claims "Jane Austen has been slandered as a great feministic propagandist of the 19th century", while @Showtunesgirl has recently pointed me to this review for The Hunger Games, in which MLB acknowledges she hasn't actually read the books, but she read a synopsis, so that's good enough (SPOILER: It's not good enough. She's totally wrong about parents "entering" their kids in a lottery. There's no choice. Kids are in the lottery, and if you object you all get shot). Enjoy the rabbit hole here: http://ladybibliophile.blogspot.co.uk/ ETA: Could someone please help me figure out how to tag this topic? I read the instructions in the FAQ and I can't find a tag field :[

    How do I start threads?

I'm trying to start a thread in Snark, but I'm not seeing it posting. Has the post limit to start threads been raised?
  4. Have we talked about this Facebook page? It's a collection of outtakes from uber fundy Christian homeschooling texts, compiled, it says, by people who were subjected to them as kids.

    Fundie Homeschool Reading List

Candy revealed her homeschooling plans for the year including the reading lists for the children. See http://eyes2jesus.blogspot.com/, August 10, 2016. Stuff in parenthesis () I added. Looks like the oldest kid is getting fully indoctrinated into his parents' crazy-ass beliefs. And why is the 9th grader learning to correct eyesight naturally? Buy the kid some glasses!

    Jacksons Handwriting

Saw this on my ig this am. I'm not terribly familiar with handwriting milestones and what it should look like at what age. So pleas correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't this look more like a 5yr olds handwriting than a 10 yr old? *Totally not surprised about this, sadly.
  8. Which Duggar would you nominate for the typical high school yearbook awards? For 'Most likely to succeed', I'm going with Josiah. I think I detect a bit of reason in his gaze. 'Quietest' must go to Jana, and 'Most Athletic' would be Joy, hands down. 'Teachers pet' I think would be Jill or Josie. Biggest Flirt? Biggest Slacker? etc...
  9. thehollywoodgossip.com/2014/10/jessa-duggar-questions-radiometric-dating-believes-is-earth-is-l/#more The 21-year-old, whose comments on abortion and the Holocaust made headlines last month, is sure to incur more online wrath now by merely posting a link. She has been critical of Atheism and evolution before, so linking to a pro-creationism article titled "Does radiometric dating prove the earth is old?" isn't out of left field. Still, it makes it plain as day where she stands here ... The article points out supposed discrepancies in radiometric dating "proving" Earth is, in actuality, not several billion of years old. Just 6,000 approximately. The conclusion of this "study" is as follows: "The best way to learn about history and the age of the earth is to consult the history book of the universe ... the Bible." "Many scientists and theologians accept a straightforward reading of Scripture and agree that the earth is about 6,000 years old." "It is better to use the infallible Word of God for our scientific assumptions than to change His Word in order to compromise with 'science' that is based upon man’s fallible assumptions." "True science will always support God’s Word." Humans and dinosaurs lived together just a few thousand years ago, according to this analysis - who knew? - so don't even think about playing that card.

    IBLP/ATI Question

So I was wondering about this last night. Can you be a Gothardite without being a homeschooler?? It seems ATI is intrinsically interwoven into the IBLP program. If not, are you pressured to join ATI?
  11. My hubby and I were talking about how we got interested back in the early days about ATI and Wisdom booklets and we thought that perhaps it is how the Wisdom booklets are edited. We were thinking of all the times the books were shown on the specials and episodes and we couldn't remember them all. We were going to make a list. This is the Content overview of the Wisdom Booklets http://ati.iblp.org/ati/family/curricul ... toverview/ This is what I have (I will provide links) 14 Children and Pregnant again- Law Resource Learn about bankruptcy laws Wisdom Booklet #35 Raising 16 Children- I think they just took stuff from the first special, but show going to ATI Conference 16 Children and moving in- just show using booklets. don't know which ones Schoolhouse Duggars- Showed Wisdom booklet #3 Duggar School Daze- she does not mention the "resources" they use. This episode always shows there is no real order Which episode/special talked about learning about the eye? Also I thought this was an interesting http://forums.welltrainedmind.com/topic ... -booklets/ Some people really told this guy to not look into it
  12. Jessa and Ben really need to learn to STFU rawstory.com/rs/2014/09/reality-tv-star-jessa-duggar-blames-the-holocaust-on-the-theory-of-evolution/
  13. I am very annoyed by what Michelle said about the Doctor who delivered Josie. She says that due to "all his skills in school, he was able to save you". HIS SKILLS HE LEARNT IN SCHOOL. You deny your kids any real chance of going to university to pursue dreams, yet you know that this Doctor wouldn't be where he was if it wasn't from school. I don't think you can get a medical degree from College Minus.
  14. youtube.com/watch?v=q4UNgcK4urw#t=11 So Michelle is pretending she actually teaches her own children. And is that Jim Boob acting like he helps. Oh just realized it looks like each older child has their own lap top now. They must have dozens of computers in that house.

    Duggars and Teaching

In all of the (many) debunkings of the SOTDRT and other "homeschooling" Duggar-related stuff, I was just watching the episode where Michelle and Jill teach Joy to drive and thinking it was really sweet. Sure, they don't do a great job teaching her to parallel park, but it was nice to see Michelle actually engaged with one of the older girls.
  16. Wohoo The DUggar kids can visit 75 pre-approved websites once big sis Jana types in the passcode. I know this has been discussed here somewhat. I think it is an attempt to make them look more 'liberal''. This is 75 sites out of the whole dang internet. I know i visit way more doing research for articles.
  17. As an English major (well, to become one in three weeks) I probably judge people too much by their reading habits. I was rather horrified watching the episode where J'chelle and Jill went to a school to talk about reading and the only book Jill could think of to mention to the kids was Sarah Maxwell's courtship book. Others can worry about the lack of science education in SOTDRT, but I am most disturbed by the lack of literature. (Interestingly, lots of SAHDS are into classics and write their own novels, but none of the Duggar girls are allowed that individuality.) Full disclosure: growing up conservative SDA my biggest act of rebellion was reading Shakespeare. So, here's an old Barnes and Noble piece in which J'chelle claims they read a lot. (Almost typed "breed a lot"). But there's a conspicuous lack of works for the older "children" that would be anything but instruction on how to live a perfect fundie life -- nothing that could introduce ambiguity or require interpretation. Per the course with them, I know, but still makes me mad. http://bookclubs.barnesandnoble.com/t5/ ... a-p/364748
  18. Abigail writes a post about education that would probably make my retired teacher father weep. abigails-alcove.blogspot.com/2014/01/a-new-love-for-elementary-education.html How does she know she's a "secondary school teacher" when she has no children that age and doesn't have a background in education? And I think it's sad that her didn't know how to read in 2nd grade--that was the age when I was hiding a flashlight under my pillow so that I could read American Girl books in bed after my parents tucked me in.
  19. I came across a picture of some of the Duggars' signatures and I was wonderwing whether anyone here knew a bit more about character traits visible in handwriting and such...? I think it's interesting that the girls don't use cursive and Jana uses capitals in her signature. facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=402765363155612&set=a.388579354574213.1073741828.269181913180625&type=1&theater

    Duggar math

I did not want to ruin the 19 K&C God Save us All thread With Duggar math so I thought I would start a new thread. Who knows maybe give TLC some ideas-LOL. Anyway for the first contribution I have decided to calculate all of the plastic utensils, plates, and cups the Duggars use per year (not counting Josh, Anna and the kids) assuming two meals per day and not recycling anything. The prices assume that they buy these items by the case of 1000. They probably don't. Their cup usage could be even greater than my calculations. I also calculated the sheer number of plastic items going into the landfill. Part of the reason I'm doing this is that I'm tired of all of the folksy "fun facts" trivia TLC puts out. 21 x 2 = 21 people counting Grandma 1 plastic fork each x two meals a day = 42 forks per day 21 x 2 = 42 (1 plastic knife each x two meals a day = 42 knives per day) 21 x 2 = 42 (1 plate or bowl each for two meals = 42 paper or plastic plates per day) 21 x 2 = 42 (1 8 ounce foam cup each for two meals = 42 foam cups per day) 42 x 7 = 294 forks per week, 294 knives per week and 294 plastic/paper plates or bowls per week, and 294 foam 8 ounce cups per week 294 x 52 weeks in a year = 15288 plastic forks per year, 15288 plastic knives per year, 15288 plastic/paper plates per year, 15288 foam 8 ounce cups per year Case of paper plates 1000 count is 36.99 plus tax at Staples. $36.99 x 15.28 = $565.20 on paper plates 1000 plastic forks are 17.14 on Amazon.com 17.14 x 15.288 = 262.03 on plastic forks 1000 plastic knives 19.99 at Staples $19.99 x 15.288 =305.61 on plastic knives 1000 8 ounce foam cups $24.98 with shipping online 24.98 x 15.28 = 381.61 for foam cups 565.20 plates + 262.03 forks + 305.61 knives + 381.61 foam cups = $1514.45 61152 pieces of plastic for the landfills per year
  22. Would love your thoughts- compared to the Duggars and this family http://parentables.howstuffworks.com/fa ... pgn=fbtlc1
  23. Michelle actually remembered Josie exists, and decided to tell us all to STFU: http://parentables.howstuffworks.com/he ... ddler.html Conveniently leaving out the world tour which made her seriously Ill. Technically that didn't happen during flu season. it's all good! Most eagle-eyed views know she's not entirely caught up. Wisdom booklets. Shiver. Micropreemies need more than that to catch up, idiot.

  25. Here is an interview with Michelle Duggar on their homeschooling methods: aophomeschooling.com/blog/homeschool-view/duggar-family-on-homeschool-organization/ This is a list of homeschooling resources the Duggars recommend: duggarsblog.blogspot.com/2011/03/duggars-on-homeschool-curricula.html Note that they recommend Bob Jones University Press and A Beka. You can read some choice quotes from those textbooks here: http://theimmoralminority.blogspot.com/ ... -fund.html
