Kavanaugh/Blasey Ford Sexual Assault Allegations Hearing
Cartmann99 posted a topic in Quiver Full of Politics
I'm starting a new thread so that interested parties can more easily find the discussion for this particular hearing, and not have to search through the other Kavanaugh-related threads. https://www.indystar.com/story/news/2018/09/26/kavanaugh-hearing-how-watch-christine-blasey-ford-testify-supreme-court-nominee-livestream/1430037002/ C-Span 3 is predicting that tomorrow's hearing will be a long one: https://www.c-span.org/schedule/?channel=3- 512 replies

I figured I'd start this thread to discuss the absolute shitstorm going on in Virginia instead of clogging the Governor thread, since the situation has gone past the governor's mansion. To recap: Democratic Governor Ralph Northam's med school yearbook from 1984 shows a picture on his page with a person in a KKK outfit and another in blackface. He initially apologized, then denied the picture was of him. Oh, and his nickname in his college yearbook was "coonman". No, I couldn't make that up. Democratic Lieutenant Governor Justin Fairfax has now been accused of sexual assault and/or rape by two women. Democratic Attorney General Mark Herring announced that in 1980, as a college student, he appeared with makeup to look like a rapper. A Republican state senator edited yearbooks with racist images and slurs.

This is disgusting -
An Iowa State University student from Spain was assaulted and murdered. I know this makes me an awful person, but I'm just going to come right out and say it. I don't see the likes of Steve King, Kim Reynolds, Joni Ernst, Chuck Grassley, or all those reich wing dumb fucks giving a shit about this young woman whose life came to a violent end.

Texas deputy sexually assaulted undocumented immigrant's child, sheriff says

In Texas I hope they put this bastard in a cave so deep he has to look up to see hell. -
I was inspired to start this thread after reading this article on the progressive double standard on Bill Clinton versus Harvey Weinstein or Donald Trump from Jacobin, a democratic socialist magazine: https://jacobinmag.com/2017/10/bill-clinton-harvey-weinstein-sexual-assault However, this is a subject that I have been thinking about ever since Monicagate in the 1990s when I was in high school. I was never comfortable with how mainstream feminists threw Monica Lewinsky under the bus (see the NYT op-ed piece by Gloria Steinem references in the link). I get that from a political perspective, the idea was probably that it was better that sacrifice Lewinsky to prevent Republicans from enacting anti-woman policies, but i hate the idea that some women are considered disposable while others are to be pushed into prominence. In any case, the question that the article raises is very valid: would liberals and progressives be as sanguine about the allegations against Bill Clinton if the subject of these rumors was some other guy (eg Clarence Thomas, Harvey Weinstein, Bill Cosby, Josh Duggar, Donald Trump)? If we claim to take sexual harassment seriously, shouldn’t that mean doing so even when it may politically hurt us to do so? To me, the underlying problem is patriarchy. It doesn’t matter how one identifies politically or how much money one give to charity or political causes. If a man thinks that women only exist as objects for his gratification and knows he can get away with assault and harassment because of his position, he’ll do it. And the overarching societal system is structured in such a way that discourages people, whether male or female, from standing up to men in authority. I know that talking about patriarchy in public is even less popular than talking about white supremacy, but unless we deal with the underlying causes of these serial abusers, these scandals will just keep happening.

D.C. Police Allegedly Used Rape and Molestation as Weapons Against J20 protesters
Cleopatra7 posted a topic in Quiver Full of Politics
Many of you may know that the D.C. Police kettled (i.e. Indiscriminately arrested) over 200 people during Trump's inauguration, including members of the press and street medics. Although the D.C. Police are supposedly one of the better forces when it comes to respecting the freedoms of protesters, there is ample evidence to suggest otherwise, especially now that some J20 defendants are claiming that they were raped and sexually assaulted after being kettled: https://thinkprogress.org/aclu-sees-dc-cops-over-inauguration-arrests-971b821c9480 It speaks volumes about our twisted values as a country when people are more outraged by a smashed Starbucks window than rapist cops.- 4 replies

Teen sexually assaults baby on tape, gets no jail time
Cleopatra7 posted a topic in Wide World of Snark
Life is increasingly making no sense. How is it possible to molest a baby, on film, no less, and get no jail time? https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/true-crime/wp/2016/09/19/teen-pleads-guilty-to-sexual-abuse-of-a-1-year-old-girl-then-a-judge-gives-him-no-prison-time/ It seems like the perpetrator was manipulated into the act by older adults online, but even so, he should have realized that what he was doing was wrong. -
I'm surprised this went by the wayside for so long...14 women (only one who got a monetary settlement) claiming he was a serial rapist (would drug womens' drinks then have sex with them). I remember the original allegations but they got smoothed over, butwin the wake of a comedian mentioning them and Jian Ghomeshi (Canada) they're coming out again. Sad. I believe the women, one of whom recently came out to CNN about an assault in '69. Now Janice Dickinson weighs in http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2014/11/1 ... 81808.html

http://www.theguardian.com/society/2016/apr/27/oral-sex-rape-ruling-tulsa-oklahoma-alcohol-consent?CMP=twt_gu Here is the article that just left me stunned. To sum up, a teenage girl was drunk, passed out, and a teenage boy orally raped her. He was charged and a judge said the state's law on consent/rape doesn't cover oral offenses. This IS 2016, right?! -
Big gang assault on women in Germany on New Years Eve
prayawaythefundie posted a topic in Wide World of Snark
This is all over social media here at the moment: On New Years Eve dozens of women were insulted, robbed, assaulted - and at least in one case even raped - by some sort of mega gang at the central station in the German city of cologne. BCC article: http://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-35231046 -
I used to love to listen to Radio Q, and Jian Ghomeshi's interviews with rock stars, authors, etc. It was on public Canadian radio out of Toronto. Then he was accused of being violent towards several different girlfriends, fired from his show, and put on trial. He claimed he was into "rough sex," but what was described did not come across as consensual to me. Three women testified against him. He hired a female lawyer known for ruthlessness, who basically put the women testifying against him on trial. So now he was found not guilty. What does everyone think? I have mixed feelings, but I usually believe that women don't put themselves through the trauma of a trial unless something pretty bad happened. http://www.slate.com/blogs/xx_factor/2016/03/24/jian_ghomeshi_found_not_guilty_of_sexual_assault_in_shocking_proclamation.html

Port of Spain, Trinidad mayor blames women's lewdness for assualts and murder during Carnival
EmainMacha posted a topic in Quiver Full of Misogyny
Not sure if this is the right forum but must share my outrage!! The mayor of Port of Spain in Trinidad is (thankfully) coming under international scrutiny for his victim blaming comments prior to Carnival when he essentially said women's outfits and lewdness durung the season led to their being assualted. Comments which he then reiterated after a female Japanese visitor who played mas with a local band was found murdered on Ash Wednesday. Hopefully the misogynistic prick will lose his position over this. https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/morning-mix/wp/2016/02/12/outrage-in-trinidad-after-mayor-blames-carnival-killing-on-dancers-lewd-behavior/ I thought I put this in Quiverful of Misogyny!
