  1. Informal poll time: has anybody else noticed that some Christians are suddenly praying out loud for people to heal and expecting televangelist-style instantaneous results? I've seen or heard of at least three instances in the last two weeks. At a recent picnic, a man that we don't know at all put his hands on the fella's injured parts, prayed three or four times each for my fella's shoulder and back--and then expectantly asked "How does it feel? Did it work? No? Let's try again." It felt like the guy was putting a lot of pressure on my fella to "be healed". The most awkward part was that he only actually said a full prayer once. The other times, he just said, "in the name of Jesus...amen." I felt kind of uncomfortable about it, but assumed he was just very charismatic, and thought that was that, but then I heard from two more people who "announced" that God had miraculously healed people in the past week after they prayed in similar fashion. I do happen to believe that God is perfectly capable of healing people, and there is plenty of biblical precedent for believers praying for healing, but I've never been closely connected to this particular kind of agressive healing prayer efforts, and it seems really odd for it to pop up three times in two weeks. Is there some new Christian movie out (like the time everyone was suddenly texting "God's not dead" to everyone they know)?
  2. Just had a new experience. Someone from the Rice Ministries International Prayer team just called my cell and left a recorded message on my voicemail. "We're calling today to pray for you and your family. To hear a prayer, press one" No idea how they got my phone number. Is this really a thing now?
  3. I don't have enough posts to create a topic, but I thought this story might be of interest. Let me know if it's not suitable. Thanks. Pay for pray service to pay $7.8 million in restitution Given how many preachers beg for donations in return for prayers, I was surprised someone managed to be so blatantly insincere as to trigger an investigation for consumer fraud. Then he charged them again to "investigate" his own fraudulent practices. And for the trifecta, he ran an on-line ordination service. http://komonews.com/news/consumer/man-who-ran-pay-for-prayer-website-to-pay-78-million-in-restitution

    I love my sister

For this entry, I'm not copying out anything written. This is a story my sister told me and I hope I remembered it fairly accurately. Once, there was a woman who was stuck in a flood. She climbed onto the roof of her house and prayed. "Dear God, Please save me from this flood!" Soon, a man in a boat came by. "Get in and I'll take you to safety!" he yelled. The woman yelled back, "No! I'm waiting for God to save me!" A bit later, an inner tube floated by her. "No," she said to herself, "I believe God will save me." Then, a log floated by. Again, she chose to wait for God to save her. Then, she drowned. When she met God in heaven, she asked Him, "Lord, I prayed for your help. I waited faithfully for You to save me from the flood. Why didn't you save me?" God replied, "I tried to save you. I sent a man in a boat and then an inner tube and even a log." For a little context, my sister told me this story after I told her I was going to see a psychologist for help with my clinical depression. I wasn't sure what she would think about counseling, when she believes people can be healed through prayer. (Most days, I also believe that God answers prayers. I also believe that the answer can be, "No" and that an answer of "No" doesn't mean that God doesn't love the person or that the person lacks sufficient faith to be healed.) She told me the story and said that she believes God can use lots of different ways to help people. She also reassured me that depression doesn't mean that I'm not a Christian or that God doesn't love me. I have an awesome sister.

    Ted Cruz said what??

http://www.patheos.com/blogs/friendlyatheist/2015/11/08/sen-ted-cruz-atheists-arent-fit-to-be-commander-in-chief-of-this-nation/ Prayer is 100% not the first place my mind went. Anyone else got a really dirty mind, or is it just me? But on a more serious note, he clearly doesn't just believe atheists can't be president, but anyone who isn't Christian/is part of a religion that doesn't pray on their knees isn't fit. Fucking asshole.
  6. This makes me ill. Where was this "caravan" when tornadoes nearly wiped Cullman and other towns in AL off the map in April 2011? You stupid assholes want a prayer caravan, but you won't come to Cullman to help after a natural disaster. I hope they succeed in blocking the caravan from doing their thing on school property. Why not host the even in your own backyard Sup. Coleman? Why won't some good Christian from the area open up property for this event? Sup. Coleman, you have an agenda as do most school systems in AL! Anyway, full article can be found here: christiannews.net/2013/07/27/alabama-school-superintendent-to-defy-atheist-demands-to-cancel-prayer-caravan-event/

  8. Well a Mormon miracle in this day and age but like gays this may just be a temporary thing. http://m.apnews.com/ap/db_268743/conten ... =ZSWT2Hi6b SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - For the first time in the event's 183-year history, a woman led a prayer Saturday at the semiannual gathering of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Jean A. Stevens led the morning session's closing prayer for the more than 100,000 Mormons gathered in Salt Lake City for the two-day general conference, and the millions more watching via satellite, radio or Internet broadcast.
