  1. I talked about this a bit in the Kanye thread but I wanted to bring it up here and ask others for their opinion. I feel like I am the only one that does not find Taylor Swift to be a genuine person and I don't know if others feel the same. I used to be a huge Taylor swift fan from 2008-2009. I listened to her everyday and I knew all her songs by heart. Her music got me through some break ups. After the Kanye incident, I felt like she changed and not in a good way. I was disappointed because I'd watch her interviews and listen to her and in my heart, I could no longer find her a genuine person. It became clear that whether it was her choice or not, everything good that she was doing was being carefully crafted for her "image". Taylor first was presented as a country girl who played her guitar, wrote songs for fun, and was an outcast in highschool. After the Kanye incident, there was a big change in how her image was being handled. Taylor has too many boyfriends? Let's show her with a group of girls all the time and have her talk about being a feminist. Too country? Let's chop her hair and have her do a signature red lip to transition to superstar and do away with country. Let's show her baking cookies with Hailee Steinfeld to appeal to young girls. Let's make her bring tall skinny models on stage to make people associate her with beauty and power. Lets have Taylor Swift do weekly hospital visits on tour and call in the papparazzi. Let's have her make donations and publicize them. Her $250,000 donation to Kesha didn't feel genuine. Why publicize it anyway? Why not just do it anonymously? Her donations all become trending headlines. I'm telling you, she has the best PR around and Duggars need to take a page from her book. It is so good that's even Forbes did an article on how to craft your company similar to how Taylor Swift crafts her image. However, at the end of the day, I have a feeling these are not Taylor's own personal decisions but rather, her appearance, behavior, and actions, are the effect of an outstanding PR team managing her image as a brand as if she is some sort of commodity. Off topic a bit, but I also didn't like how in her Grammy speech she mentioned "As the first woman to win two albums of the year..." If you get the chance, these make for FASCINATING reads on this Taylor Swift is Not Your Friend http://gawker.com/taylor-swift-is-not-your-friend-1717745581 Business Lessons from Taylor Swift (dozens more on this) http://www.forbes.com/sites/robertamatuson/2015/07/27/business-lessons-learned-from-taylor-swift/#60ed958845f5
  2. I'm going to let her letter speak for itself. It is awesome, moving, and makes me angry at the same time. I will say though, that I am glad someone is taking a swing at that ass-backwards, straight from the 5th century B.C. excuse for a "newspaper," The Daily Fail. It's a shame that she wasn't permitted to come out on her own terms, but I am glad to see someone more lgbt sensitive take the spotlight from Caitlyn Jenner. http://www.windycitymediagroup.com/m/APPredirect.php?AID=54509
  3. I'm not a huge Chick-fil-A fan, but their latest promo that some locations are doing is kinda cool. Free ice cream if you lock your cell phones up in a "coop" while you eat your meal: http://www.nbclosangeles.com/entertainment/the-scene/Chick-fil-A-Chicken-Coop-Challenge-370858981.html I hope they have to shut them down before locking them in the coop.
  4. Because, really, he's just the gift that keeps on giving. He reminds me of my favorite assignment in grad school, where we were given a movie to watch and had to diagnose at least three major characters using the DSM-IV. Never mind how long ago that was. Anything public is fair game: the SNL rant, the fact that it's been stated many, many times by many, many people that he threw out all KimK's clothes and now dresses her, the whole "Yeezus" bit he does (you can toss in a little Hova if need be, but I'm way more interested in 'Ye,) the fact that he's a GENE-yuss y'all, the way he hit up Mark Z. on Twitter for goodness sakes! for money because he has WAY more to give to the world and just needs a lousy billion dollars (that would totally be better spent on Kanye than on stoopid schools in Africa that don't actually help anybody)...the list is literally endless. Ready? Break!
  5. This article reminded me of some of our fundie families who have reality shows: https://broadly.vice.com/en_us/article/the-american-nightmare-i-worked-in-reality-tv-and-almost-lost-my-soul?utm_source=broadlyfbus It is crazy how damaging these shows are. I don't think kids should be allowed to do them.
  6. I know I shouldn't be surprised, since Charlie Sheen does not seem to have the best judgement in general, but I can't see this ending well for him or his loved ones: http://www.people.com/article/charlie-sheen-off-hiv-meds

    Best Musical Memories

So, I'm sitting outside at our place in Florida with my husband and, yes, obviously, having some wine. We are playing our music and I have so many songs that remind me of our earliest days together as 18-year-olds in '75, After 37 years of marriage, and, what, 40 together!, these still take me back and I'm that lovestruck girl (still love the guy). Anything from Captain Fantastic by Elton John. (Omg, I remember us being in his little red Vega.) If I Were Your Woman by Gladys Knight. (Should be top of everyone's playlist.) I'm Not a Perfect Person by Hoobastank. (A more recent addition, obviously.) Anything from Silk Degrees by Boz Scaggs. (We listened to this incessantly back in the day and then saw him live and I sobbed like an idiot. One of the best concerts we've ever seen.) Look What You've Done to Me is my ringtone for him.. Eagles. ('Nuff said.) Number one, though, is Brothers in Arms. Oh my god. Ok, there are way too many to list. I will probably add to this but I'd love to hear what songs bring back memories for you. Nothing takes you back like a song (except maybe an aroma). Tell me your musical memories, FJ.

    Saint West

Yep! Apparently the latest Kim/Kanye spawn is going to be called Saint. Only a smidge better than, say, South, but ridiculous nonetheless. Given Kanye's self-absorbed-ness, it's kind of fitting.

    Macho dude advertising

This is not really about MRAs, but this seemed like the most appropriate forum. I have been rolling my eyes until they hurt at some obnoxious Be a Macho Man ads. I don't see a lot of TV ads, since I mostly watch TCM and am quick to hit the mute button, and often get up and go do something, when watching other stations and an ad comes on. And yet, these dumb things still managed to get under my skin. Interestingly, when I went looking for a series of Chevy ads that annoy me, I found the long version, which includes all of the short ones, and a few less-obnoxious and more practical moments. It's still pretty stupid, though, and glorifies the image of a Manly Man With a Truck more than actual reasons to own a truck: [bBvideo 560,340:256nwq6j] [/bBvideo] Then there's this idiocy. which I guess the ad creators thought was mocking other macho ads. But I think it ends up sending the message "don't let those other products tell you how to be a man -- only our product can do that!" [bBvideo 560,340:256nwq6j]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=veZtXsUMmIA[/bBvideo] Of course macho ads are nothing new (see the compilation below, which I found when googling for the ads I was thinking about), and even the "we're not really macho, we're being ironic about being macho" ones are getting really old, but these are the current ones that have annoyed me. The Duggars and Pop Culture

I wonder how much the Duggars really know about pop culture. Do they know that Whitney Houston died and who she was? How about Tim Tebow, do they even know about him? Do they know about tragedies like 9/11, Columbine, or the BTK Killer? Anyone know the answer?
  12. I'm not sure if it's covered in chatter, but Angelina Jolie's undergoing an operation to reduce her chances of getting breast cancer. The article's neutral... until you get to the comments http://edition.cnn.com/2013/05/14/showb ... ?hpt=hp_t2

    Spring Breakers

I saw this movie yesterday and loved it. I thought it was gorgeous, hilarious, and more than a bit disturbing. And the music was awesome. (Also at one point, James Franco's character and the girls reminded me of Warren Jeffs and his sister-wives. But maybe that was just me.) Has anyone else seen this movie? And what are your thoughts on it? I saw it with a large group of people, and the opinions ranged from "masterpiece" to "that was awful why did I waste my money." It's a very polarizing film.

  15. MyNameIsJonas

Apologies if this has been posted already, but I searched around and didn't see anything. This has been blowing up on my Twitter and Tumblr the past few days. Basically a group of MRAs are trying to get this tag trending in response to the "I Need Feminism Because..." meme. People have been (rightfully) trolling. Hardcore.

My dad dressed me for a week!

http://shine.yahoo.com/channel/beauty/f ... toViewer=1 No, not me, this lady. Obviously her dad wasn't a fundie, although he did have some weird ideas about what looked good on people (that was one fugly purple cocktail dress). But it got me wondering- if some of our fundies got their dads to dress them for a week, would it be pretty much the same as they dress now? More fundie-ish? Or more normal? I'm leaning towards the more extreme fundie side for the Botkin girls, and less fundie-ish for Zsuzsu, since she didn't grow up fundie.
