  1. You know someone is boring when the most exciting thing about him is his mom’s wig.
  2. The Quiverful of Duggars sub-forum has their own rundown of Duggar wedding dresses, so now with Tori Bates getting married, we obviously need a thread dedicated to dresses. Post your rankings! Here's mine, from best to least: 1. Tori (Bates) Smith Without question, the most sophisticated dress and despite some iffy modifications, overall beautiful. Extra points for the long train, classy updo, nice shoes, being adventurous enough to choose a champagne underlay, a fitted lace bodice with some sparkle, and even going for a bit of a sexier look. Could be perfect if fitted better on the waist and possibly didn't have the shear sleeves but just the lace cap sleeves, since there's already a lot going on. Her whole winter theme came together well, so this is easily my personal favorite Bates wedding. 2. Alyssa (Bates) Webster Kudos to Alyssa for going for a well-fitted trumpet style, it looked great on her and fit her personality. Extra points for the bright pink shoes and manila veil. Points taken away for the awkward flower on the waist, the earrings that do not fit the look, and the weird thick strap/cap sleeve since we all know Alyssa was itching to ditch the modesty standards the second she got to Florida. The Barbie pink and blue colors are not for me, but are fitting for her age, personality, and time of year. 3. Whitney (Perkins) Bates I personally don't like Whitney's dress at all, but at least it fit her well and she went for a cute bolero instead of some dumb modesty modification. I also don't like the gathered-to-the-side style but again, that's just me. Can you imagine her look though if she hadn't been trying her best to be "modest" to impress her new fundie in-laws, had already gone to a few other fundie weddings like Jessa and Jinger's, and had come into the awesome sense of style and beautiful hair she has now? I think she would have looked great in Jessa's dress and a nice updo instead of the over-geled bangs and slightly crunchy waves. Bonus points for this sassy pose though, showing us that jeans and a career in real estate would eventually be in her future even if she had to hide her leggings in her honeymoon pics: 4. Erin (Bates) Paine I actually thought Erin looked really cute overall and it helps that she's just such a beautiful girl that she'd make any dress look okay, even though she was a victim of the fundie-modesty-frankenstein-t-shirt-dress trend. The dress fit her bodice well, the princess style suited her personality perfectly, there was just enough sparkle, but I just can't get past that awful modesty panel on the front and dumb sleeves. Can you imagine what her wedding would have looked like in 2017 once the Bates had more money from their show and fundies were finding designers like Ms. Renee? Extra points for great hair though and without question the hottest fundie husband: 5. Michael (Bates) Keilen Poor Michael, she seems like such a nice person but her dress was Rufus-awful and I can't even start on the hair. Her dress is the worst example of modesty-frankenstein alterations, with that horrible ruched front and badly done sleeves, and just generally not form-fitting in any way. As a fellow short girl, she either should have skipped the A-line style for something more fitted at the hips (a sheath, trumpet, or mermaid) or worn heels - it doesn't help that the way it was hemmed made it too long. The only nice thing I can say is I liked the cherry blossom/rustic theme including the pink and beige bridesmaid dresses since it fit their relationship history. Even worse that in the BuB episode we saw 2 dresses that looked SO much better on her. Look at that first one, and even her hair just down like that, she would have looked gorgeous! And just for fun, here's Kelly Jo and a porno-stached Gil:
  3. Youtube randomly suggested this clip to me. If you watch from 2:40-3:20 mins it shows how Michaella got to be CinderJana for Erin's wedding and sew all the bridesmaids dresses last minute after her sisters decided they hated them. Even Jana thought the amount of effort Michael had to put in was crazy. But I guess it's that servant' heart.
  4. Michael & Brandon have been married for 11 months. Previous discussion:
  5. So, now Michael Bates is married to Brandon Keilen. The bump watch begins! Any guesses as to when she'll be pregnant? Immediate like Jill Dillard or a while longer?
  6. Since the other 3 Bates weddings had their own thread I think they deserve one (Mods, merge this if you disagree). Instagram tag is #BatesKeilenWedding I'm dying to see her dress.

  8. A very interesting story behind Michaella Bates name from the comments section of the Bates blog: I didn't know much about this character in The Bible, so went to [link=http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michal]wikipedia[/link]. Apparently she was married to someone called David, that her father wanted dead, she was the second daughter and 'booby prize' if you will (he apparently wanted the sister but the father said no and offered her up) and "It is recorded that she chose the welfare of David over the wishes of her father." She helped him escape from the father who wanted him dead. He then apparently went off, drinking, whoring it up with others and remarrying etc. Her father gave her off to marriage to someone else. Then in the end her brother basically gives her back to David while he rules after their father dies. She criticizes the guy for his behaviour and apparently as punishment for everything she did (which I still don't understand what she did wrong?) she dies alone and barren and childless. Kind of reminds me why I rarely read The Bible, these characters are messed up! But anywho, thought this was all very interesting. Anyone have anymore information about Michal the character in the Bible and thoughts about using it as a name and why it would be seen as a bad role-model?
  9. Hope it hasn't been posted yet! It's on the Bates family blog. Man, they're going to go broke from all these weddings!
  10. Can anyone give a run down of the name-changing saga for Michael Bates? It seems like every time I turn around she has a new name variation and I haven't been able to find anything on the Bates blog to explain it.
  11. Jana Duggar and Michael Bates went on a 10 day mission trip to Honduras and El Salvador with SOS ministries. I can't tell from the pictures whether there were other J'slaves on the trip. blog.thebatesfamily.com/2013/09/10/michaels-mission-trip/ Jana seems to love traveling and is always finding opportunities to go without the rest of her family. I just wish she had the opportunity to travel for herself, in a way that wasn't tied to an agenda.
  12. Flicking through the Bates' latest blog post and there are some beautiful photos of Michael. After so much time in shadows, I'm glad there are some photos that show how truly beautiful she is! blog.thebatesfamily.com/2013/06/13/lake-funpart-2/

    Michael Bates?

Is the oldest Bates girl named Michael? I always thought it was Michaela. They have an update about her on their blog. She's going on a mission trip with some of the Duggar girls. Are they going to bring back Number 20? Why would they name their daughter Michael?
  14. She posted about taking the "children" to the zoo. I'm sorry but imo, most people refer to their siblings as their brothers & sisters, as in "my brothers & sisters were so excited..." I guess it's a "Quiverfull" thing to refer to one's younger siblings as the children. I noticed in 19KAC Jill & Jana would refer to Josie as their or our baby, hello, she's your sister!! Sorry, just another thing I find sad and annoying about the fundy/Quiverfull lifestyle. By the way is "Michaeluh" an actual name? I've never heard of it before and always want to say Michaela (Mikayla) but know they pronounce it "Michaelah".
  15. On one of the latest posts they had this picture of Gil's family, which I originally didn't think she was in. Then I noticed the girl one from the right and HOLY SHIT what has happened to her? She looks the same age as her mother, and has put on a ton of weight. I think it's the stress of having to be the sole workhorse of that family. It doesn't look like she has time to care much for appearance, and her eyes look so sad. I reckon she drew the short straw in having Princess Erin as the next sibling; all the younger girls will look at them both and figure out it's better to act spoiled and selfish than join Michaella in having to do all the work and reap none of the rewards. She stands even less of a chance than the Duggar girls when it comes to actually being able to get married. She's so in the background we even seem to forget her on here most of the time. Free Michaella! gilbatesfamily.com/files/2012/01/family-in-s.c.jpg
  16. What's the deal with Michaella Bates? She's the oldest, but we never hear about her. Zach is courting, Erin has the hair and the piano talent and is going to "college." But Michaella? I get the feeling they want us to forget she exists. Is she gay? Low IQ? Or what?????????? Inquiring minds want to know, so give me the dirt!

    Bates attend REAL colleges

So how come the Bates kids can attend a community college and a local Christian College without becoming tube-top wearing sluts or green haired guys, but the Duggars are stuck with College Plus?? I'm disappointed in the Bates for taking advantage of Lawson's bank account, but I still have more respect for them--they are letting their kids grow up a little bit and are letting them have a tiny, tiny bit of freedom. I imagine both Michaella and Zach either had to take the same classes or take a sibling, but still! If it's like our very rural, very small community college there's still an impressive cross section of humanity!
  18. Looks like the Duggars visited the Bates Family again. http://gilbatesfamily.com/blog/ There's a photo of little Michael and Jordyn with lots of hair!
  19. and brought Michaela along, presumably as chaparone but also came bearing Addalee-all of 5 years old-Why? I can understand one of the preteens but why drag a preschooler along-can you imagine Hannie going when John David courts?
  20. So I'm reading the "About Us" page of the Bates Family Blog where I guess Kelly originally and mistakenly posted her pregnancy announcement. At any rate, it states that Michaella (that's the spelling these days) *eyeroll* is pursuing a degree in English. With this in mind I have a couple of questions: 1. What would the curriculum look like? Do they just read approved books and write reports or they allowed to create their own theses and write essays that go against the views of the school, but still can be proven in text (ie. be allowed to think critically)? If she's going to Gothard U, how can she do anything but TOE the party line? If she's going to Erin's school, taking one class a semester, she'll be done by the time she's 30 and, like any four year school I know of anyway, paying full tuition for every semester regardless of units taken...what a waste of money! 2. WHY? What value is an English degree going to have since their reading choices are so limited and she looks to be the Jill Duggar of that family; she'll be 40 and standing at the head of the DRT homeschooling the youngest of Kelly's blessings. An English degree isn't required to have Callie-Anna write a book report on "Before You Meet Prince Charming" or a Maxwell masterpiece. I suppose her degree will be helpful in crafting the typical 9th graders' 5-paragraph essay, which is about all that's required for a GED. I just can't see how this is going to be of any real help to her in the long run, especially given that the websites for the colleges (distance or brick and mortar) that they choose have websites an 8th grader could have written, with many faculty only holding master's degrees. I think she'd be better off going the nursing route. At least that would be practical education that she could use in her on-going career as an EMT. Speaking of which, does she have to quit if Zach does?
