  1. I think I posted about this somewhere on the board. In Kansas a 20 year old Democrat (proving jerks/assholes are on both sides of the aisle) admited to posting revenge porn about his ex girlfriend WON a seat in the Kansas House last week. https://www.foxnews.com/politics/kansas-state-house-election-revenge-porn-aaron-coleman Kansas Democrat, 20, who admitted to 'revenge porn,' wins House state race Kansas City Star Editorial Board said he 'shouldn't be allowed anywhere near the Legislature' By Evie Fordham | Fox News Fox News Flash top headlines for November 9 Fox News Flash top headlines are here. Check out what's clicking on Foxnews.com. Kansas Democrat Aaron Coleman, 20, who has admitted to being abusive to his ex-girlfriend in 2019 and perpetrating a "revenge porn" incident when he was in middle school, was elected to the state legislature this year despite the efforts of the Kansas Democratic Party. "Coleman shouldn’t be allowed anywhere near the Legislature – or the governor," the Kansas City Star Editorial Board wrote on Friday. The board was referencing a tweet from last week in which Coleman said he could "call out a hit" on Kansas Gov. Laura Kelly, a Democrat. DISPUTE OVER TRUMP YARD SIGN IN KANSAS LEAVES 3 INJURED “I’m not doing any press right now. I’m focused on getting to work for the voters of District 37," Coleman told Fox News in an email on Monday. It looks like Kansas Democrats, who are in the minority in the legislature, won't get any help from Republican state lawmakers to keep Coleman from assuming office. Democrats intend to file a complaint that Coleman is unfit for office, but without Republican votes to help them reach two-thirds of the state House, the complaint won't have any teeth, according to the Star Editorial Board. Aaron Coleman “I haven’t received a request to unseat him, but I think in a democracy we have a responsibility to uphold the integrity of our elections,” Kansas House Speaker Ron Ryckman, a Republican, said, according to the Star Editorial Board. “I’d be leery of an attempt to override the vote of the people.” Coleman is a self-proclaimed progressive and said Friday that members of his party "hate progressives more than they hate GOP." "Maybe instead of labeling me 'Unfit' – Why not extend an olive branch and help me to BECOME 'fit'. The truth is, Democrats hate progressives more than they hate GOP. Explains why nobody has bothered to be the bigger person and give me a phone call as of yet," Coleman wrote on Twitter. In September, Coleman blamed a lack of "early childhood education funding" after admitting to abusive behavior toward his ex-girlfriend. Coleman used his ex's accusations to make a case for "Medicaid for all." DEMOCRATIC KANSAS STATE HOUSE CANDIDATE BLAMES ABUSE OF EX-GIRLFRIEND ON LACK OF 'EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION FUNDING' "[W]e must pass Medicaid for all so people can receive counseling and mental health support based on need for treatment and not ability to pay," he said in a statement. Coleman’s ex-girlfriend Taylor Passow alleged that while they were dating he once slapped her and attempted to strangle her during an argument in December 2019, according to The Intercept. "While it is true I was abusive to my ex-girlfriend, I do not agree with the characterization being made about our experience in the hot tub the day after Christmas," Coleman wrote in a statement on Sunday. "I did not choke her. I also don't think she is intentionally lying, as I know large quantities of alcohol could be affecting both of our memories." Coleman won in a longtime Democratic district that includes Kansas City. He beat Democratic state Rep. Stan Frownfelter by 14 votes in the primary and beat Frownfelter, who ran as a write-in candidate, again in the general election. 2. Lawrence Kansas. The school is veritas, which I don’t know much about except for the revenue one of the kids I had on Sunday morning saying he didn’t want to go there because of the “fruity uniforms” Mr Bank fraud says he has ended ties but the Journal World says he is still listed on the board. The school of course is not exactly commenting. http://m.ljworld.com/news/2018/jan/04/lawrence-man-indicted-bank-fraud-scheme-says-he-ha/
  3. I'm filing this in my mind under WTF Kansas? They've managed to lose 70 kids in the foster care system. http://www.kansascity.com/opinion/editorials/article178380326.html https://www.usnews.com/news/best-states/kansas/articles/2017-10-11/the-latest-official-says-kansas-works-to-find-foster-kids
  4. http://www.kansascity.com/news/local/article174419606.html An Inmate has filed a suit because the Kansas Prison she's held in is a bit steeped in Christianity.
  5. Todays' WTF moment brought to you by Archbishop Joseph Naumann of Kansas... leftwingnation.org/kansas-archbishop-warns-his-bishops-to-be-wary-of-pesky-girl-scouts/
  6. We aren't talking about the 'good' kind of impartial either. Seriously, who the hell thinks that a 13 year old can consent? What the living hell? http://www.kansascity.com/news/local/crime/article145215884.html
  7. Well, the Kansas Board of Regents seems to have more sense that the state legislature does. And by the way - I believe that the University of Missouri is also adopting a clear bag policy. http://www.kansascity.com/news/local/article145594509.html
  8. I love this story. A group of high school newspaper editors/reporters fact-checked the newly hired principal. And found a few issues. That the adults running the school district missed. http://www.kansascity.com/news/local/article142989509.html
  9. http://www.emporiagazette.com/news/article_e6daaf12-9090-5a23-a92b-b642a0b237d4.html As a native Kansan (who lives next door now) I am screaming NO! right now. can we please not gut the natural prairie of the Flint Hills? The grasslands there is a vital part of the eco-structure that I seem to recall provide oxygen much like the rain forest does. But no, let's haul oil out of it.
  10. I heard about the shooting in Olathe yesterday. 1 dead, 2 wounded A man shot at middle eastern looking people in suburban KC. Turns out the men that looked middle eastern were engineers from Garmin and originally from India. In a part of this that seems to rival Florida Man - the guy crossed over into Missouri and told his story to the bartender at Applebees. http://www.kansascity.com/news/local/crime/article134459444.html The original article for the shooting seems to be at the same link.
  11. http://www.pitch.com/news/blog/20850297/kansas-lawmaker-leaves-loaded-handgun-in-committee-room I might love that this is from The Pitch and not from a traditional mainstream news source. And oh the irony that the dumbass left a gun in a committee room where people had been testifying about a fear of guns on college campuses (and hello, how many shootings have we seen on college campuses?)
  12. So this wandered onto my Facebook feed yesterday. It will get some attention in Kansas, but only because it is going to possibly affect the University of Kansas Basketball schedule going forward. And I may be sitting here remembering a certain travel slogan of Kansas about 8 years ago or so. Kansas - as big as you think (or something like that). Naturally, the immediate response around rather liberal Lawrence, KS was bumper stickers that read Kansas - as bigoted as you think. Needless to say that travel slogan ebbed away rather quickly. http://www.kansascity.com/news/politics-government/article128717554.html
  13. The father was until just recently the CEO of a Christian adult care home. He and his wife were fundraising to go to Peru as missionaries with their Peruvian adopted children, who they are now accused of starving and torturing. They pulled them out of school to home school in 2014 and evidently have been keeping them isolated since then. http://www.thekansan.com/news/20160217/story-of-abuse-unfolds/1
  14. Meanwhile in Brownbackistan (by the way, Brownback is now asking for tax hikes to fix the disaster he's made of the state budget. The alphabet doesn't go far enough for me to give his economic theories in action a grade) And remember Kobach looked for a while like Trump was courting him for something. http://cjonline.com/news/state-government/2017-01-14/kansas-election-officials-threw-out-thousands-ballots Bolding above is mine. Geography lesson: Sedgewick County = Wichita (an urban area by Kansas Standards) Douglas County = Lawrence, liberal stronghold, sits between Topeka (the capital) and KC. Johnson County = Suburban Kansas City (there is money here).
  15. Oh my. Remember the terrorists in Kansas who planned to bomb an apartment complex because of muslims? They found child porn during the investigation. Kansas terrorism investigation allegedly yields evidence of child pornography http://www.kansascity.com/news/local/crime/article119146088.html
  16. http://www.kansascity.com/news/local/crime/article119117028.html And now we have Kansas Man (actually Olathe Man) taking the heat off of Kansas man in the creepy/weird department bolding is mine.
  17. Politics aside, I often miss my home state of Kansas. (I now live in the middle of a neighboring state - no, it's not quite the same). I stumbled 5 (or more) years ago into a photographer/storm chaser via author Nancy Pickard. He shared this on facebook this weekend. http://www.stephenlocke.com/blog/2016/10/30/leoti-supercell-by-stephen-locke
  18. How's this for scary? washingtonpost.com/news/post-nation/wp/2016/10/15/it-will-be-a-bloodbath-inside-the-kansas-militia-plot-to-ignite-a-religious-war I hope these cheeto worshiping fuck muppet asshole shit gibbons go away for the rest of their natural lives. And that said lives are very, very long.

    Chasing Weather

I've followed this guy on Facebook for some years now. He's an acquaintance of an author I know and well I turn around as I've shared his stuff and a lot of folks I know also follow him. Stephen Locke is a photographer and storm chaser. The link below is to a KC news program interview with him this morning. He has a book out titled Chasing Weather. And his work was in Beyonce's Lemonade video. Also in a video for the synth-pop band Chvrches. (blink and you'll miss it). http://fox4kc.com/2016/04/26/local-storm-chasers-work-featured-in-new-beyonce-video/ I'm a Native Kansan (but do not live there now). Storms fascinate me - so long as I have cover and don't have to drive in them. The beauty Stephen manages to capture is amazing.
  20. Well in addition to that little Spanish Voter's Guide issue (where the registration deadlines in a Voting Guide for Spanish speakers was wrong) they apparently are holding registrations in limbo. Kansas (along with Georgia, Alabama & Arizona) requires proof of citizenship to vote. So registrations are now being held up for those registering via federal forms including vehicle registration (those of us who are old enough remember this as Motor-Voter). http://talkingpointsmemo.com/news/kris-kobach-voter-registration-aclu-lawsuit So if you federal register you can only vote in federal races but not state races. Let's not ignore the fact that Sec of State Kris Kobach is up for re-election this year.
  21. I posted something about this a day or two ago in the Kansas thread. But I'm going to start a new one since this involves issues of misinformation given to Spanish-Speaking Voters about Voter Registration Deadlines in Kansas. For those that don't know, Kris Kobach is presently Kansas Secretary of State. He falls way over into super Conservative territory http://www.dailykos.com/stories/2016/4/12/1514406/-Kansas-Secretary-Of-State-Admits-Unequal-Service-Provided-To-Hispanic-Voters?_=2016-04-12T14%3A04%3A29.468-07%3A00 And WTF? They changed the law in 2011 regarding regitration deadlines. and they are only just now realizing this is a mistake?
  22. Ah, Kansas. Brownbackistan? Our politics are ever more exciting as we tend to be following the ALEC playbook and rush to the right. Got a gun? Carry it with you, because you never know when you'll want to shoot someone. Want to defund the state court system for going saying the legislature has to fund education? Sure why not. If you are from KS, chime in with your opinion... maybe you love Mr. Brownback. Reasonable discourse seems healthy. If you are not from KS, compare and contrast your state's successes and failures.
  23. A great documentary from 2009 that looks at contemporary conservative Kansas as well as the socialist roots of the state. It is filmed during the 2008 elections. I definitely recommend it, free on Hulu. Has any one here seen the film? edited to add: One of the individuals in the film is a SODRT girl, who goes off to Patrick Henry, a small segment is film at PH. Mom brags on camera that PH has more interns working in the White House than Harvard... You go get to see inside shots of the Creation Museum This pretty much provided the sum total of the film's humor. Within the CM there is one shot of a female robotic that, I swear has Jingers eyes and hair. I almost spewed I was laughing so hard. If you are looking for the radical history of Kansas in this film you won't find it here. If you want to learn about some of it including the Populist movement this film gives you good jumping off points. It's well filmed and edited.
