Man indicted in bank fraud scheme says ties with Christian school ended
clueliss posted a topic in Wide World of Snark
Lawrence Kansas. The school is veritas, which I don’t know much about except for the revenue one of the kids I had on Sunday morning saying he didn’t want to go there because of the “fruity uniforms” Mr Bank fraud says he has ended ties but the Journal World says he is still listed on the board. The school of course is not exactly commenting. http://m.ljworld.com/news/2018/jan/04/lawrence-man-indicted-bank-fraud-scheme-says-he-ha/ -

Sodomy trial begins in small Kansas town after struggle to find an impartial jury
clueliss posted a topic in Wide World of Snark
We aren't talking about the 'good' kind of impartial either. Seriously, who the hell thinks that a 13 year old can consent? What the living hell? http://www.kansascity.com/news/local/crime/article145215884.html -
Well, the Kansas Board of Regents seems to have more sense that the state legislature does. And by the way - I believe that the University of Missouri is also adopting a clear bag policy. http://www.kansascity.com/news/local/article145594509.html

I love this story. A group of high school newspaper editors/reporters fact-checked the newly hired principal. And found a few issues. That the adults running the school district missed. http://www.kansascity.com/news/local/article142989509.html

http://www.emporiagazette.com/news/article_e6daaf12-9090-5a23-a92b-b642a0b237d4.html As a native Kansan (who lives next door now) I am screaming NO! right now. can we please not gut the natural prairie of the Flint Hills? The grasslands there is a vital part of the eco-structure that I seem to recall provide oxygen much like the rain forest does. But no, let's haul oil out of it.

I heard about the shooting in Olathe yesterday. 1 dead, 2 wounded A man shot at middle eastern looking people in suburban KC. Turns out the men that looked middle eastern were engineers from Garmin and originally from India. In a part of this that seems to rival Florida Man - the guy crossed over into Missouri and told his story to the bartender at Applebees. http://www.kansascity.com/news/local/crime/article134459444.html The original article for the shooting seems to be at the same link.

Kansas lawmaker leaves loaded handgun in committee room

http://www.pitch.com/news/blog/20850297/kansas-lawmaker-leaves-loaded-handgun-in-committee-room I might love that this is from The Pitch and not from a traditional mainstream news source. And oh the irony that the dumbass left a gun in a committee room where people had been testifying about a fear of guns on college campuses (and hello, how many shootings have we seen on college campuses?) -
California bans state funded travel to Kansas over LGBT discrimination concerns
clueliss posted a topic in Quiver Full of Politics
So this wandered onto my Facebook feed yesterday. It will get some attention in Kansas, but only because it is going to possibly affect the University of Kansas Basketball schedule going forward. And I may be sitting here remembering a certain travel slogan of Kansas about 8 years ago or so. Kansas - as big as you think (or something like that). Naturally, the immediate response around rather liberal Lawrence, KS was bumper stickers that read Kansas - as bigoted as you think. Needless to say that travel slogan ebbed away rather quickly. http://www.kansascity.com/news/pol- 9 replies

Another charge of abuse by Christian adoptive parents in Kansas
older than allosaurs posted a topic in Adoption
The father was until just recently the CEO of a Christian adult care home. He and his wife were fundraising to go to Peru as missionaries with their Peruvian adopted children, who they are now accused of starving and torturing. They pulled them out of school to home school in 2014 and evidently have been keeping them isolated since then. http://www.thekansan.com/news/20160217/story-of-abuse-unfolds/1 -

Politics aside, I often miss my home state of Kansas. (I now live in the middle of a neighboring state - no, it's not quite the same). I stumbled 5 (or more) years ago into a photographer/storm chaser via author Nancy Pickard. He shared this on facebook this weekend. http://www.stephenlocke.com/blog/2016/10/30/leoti-supercell-by-stephen-locke

I've followed this guy on Facebook for some years now. He's an acquaintance of an author I know and well I turn around as I've shared his stuff and a lot of folks I know also follow him. Stephen Locke is a photographer and storm chaser. The link below is to a KC news program interview with him this morning. He has a book out titled Chasing Weather. And his work was in Beyonce's Lemonade video. Also in a video for the synth-pop band Chvrches. Well in addition to that little Spanish Voter's Guide issue (where the registration deadlines in a Voting Guide for Spanish speakers was wrong) they apparently are holding registrations in limbo. Kansas (along with Georgia, Alabama & Arizona) requires proof of citizenship to vote. So registrations are now being held up for those registering via federal forms including vehicle registration (those of us who are old enough remember this as Motor-Voter). http://talkingpointsmemo.com/news/kris-kobach-voter-registration-aclu-lawsuit So if you federal register you can only vote in fed

Kobach Admits Unequal Treatment to Hispanic Voters
clueliss posted a topic in Quiver Full of Politics
I posted something about this a day or two ago in the Kansas thread. But I'm going to start a new one since this involves issues of misinformation given to Spanish-Speaking Voters about Voter Registration Deadlines in Kansas. For those that don't know, Kris Kobach is presently Kansas Secretary of State. He falls way over into super Conservative territory http://www.dailykos.com/stories/2016/4/12/1514406/-Kansas-Secretary-Of-State-Admits-Unequal-Service-Provided-To-Hispanic-Voters?_=2016-04-12T14%3A04%3A29.468-07%3A00 And WTF? Ah, Kansas. Brownbackistan? Our politics are ever more exciting as we tend to be following the ALEC playbook and rush to the right. Got a gun? Carry it with you, because you never know when you'll want to shoot someone. Want to defund the state court system for going saying the legislature has to fund education? Sure why not. If you are from KS, chime in with your opinion... maybe you love Mr. Brownback. Reasonable discourse seems healthy. If you are not from KS, compare and contrast your state's successes and failures.

A great documentary from 2009 that looks at contemporary conservative Kansas as well as the socialist roots of the state. It is filmed during the 2008 elections. I definitely recommend it, free on Hulu. Has any one here seen the film? edited to add: One of the individuals in the film is a SODRT girl, who goes off to Patrick Henry, a small segment is film at PH. Mom brags on camera that PH has more interns working in the White House than Harvard... You go get to see inside shots of the Creation Museum This pretty much provided the sum total of the film's hum
