  1. Calling the West Virginia GOP a hate infested shithole is being too nice
  2. Macy's is going to offer hijabs for sale. I've got my popcorn ready for the inevitable reich wing freak out that is sure to occur the second some horse's ass branch trumpvidian finds out about this.
  3. An appalling, abominable and abhorrent asshole in Ireland attempted to justify female genital mutilation. Female circumcision 'should be allowed by law' - member of Ireland's Islamic Cultural Centre I think in his case male castration should be equated with male circumcision. Of course he's now desperately trying to walk back his statements because of all the blowback. Trinity distances itself from Muslim lecturer in FGM row Muslim spokesperson apologises for saying it's acceptable for girls to undergo FGM Yeah, that apology is so very sincere. NOT.
  4. A Fort Smith mosque did the man who vandalized it a solid.... The members of that mosque are better people than I am. I'd rather be with them than the orange fornicate and his legions of "Christian" groupies.

  7. "A lone gunman executed a revered Queens imam and his friend as the pair walked home from Saturday prayers, blasting each in the back of the head without a word, officials said. Mosque leader Maulama Akonjee and friend Thara Uddin were dressed in Muslim garb when the killer “approached from behind and shot” from point-blank range, said NYPD Deputy Inspector Henry Sautner of the Queens South Detective Bureau." More at the Link. This is so sad. My heart goes out to their families, Mosque members and community. I hope they find the sick individual who did this!
  8. hard to tell if this is real or not. http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2016/05/16/school-teaching-creationism-with-video-from-islamic-sex-cult.html?utm_source=fark&utm_medium=website&utm_content=link Youngstown, Ohio, students are learning creationism in school with materials from a Islamic, Holocaust-denying group accused of being a sex cult. A curriculum map (PDF) recommends teachers in this public school district show a creationist video, Cambrian Fossils and the Creation of Species, as part of 10th-grade science education. The video claims that the Cambrian Explosion “totally invalidates the theory of evolution.” The Cambrian Explosion was a time period, nearly 550 million years ago, where, over the next tens of millions of years, the number of species on Earth experienced a (relatively) rapid expansion by evolutionary standards. Christian creationists regularly point to this explosion of life as evidence for creation by God and against evolution. Blink and you’d miss the Islamic connection in the video. A black screen flashes for less than one second that says “this film is based on the works of Harun Yahya.” In the right corner, there’s a gold bubble that says, “Muhammad is the messenger of Allah” in Arabic. Harun Yahya, whom The Daily Beast has covered before, is a pseudonym for Adnan Oktar, a creationist cult leader and Islamic televangelist who owns Turkey’s A9 TV channel. Yahya (along with his followers) is the author of hundreds books, including an 800-page Atlas of Creation, and another (PDF), which Oktar has now disavowed, titled The Holocaust Deception: The Hidden Story of Nazi-Zionist Collaboration and the Inner Story of the Hoax of “Jewish Holocaust.”

  10. This has been going on for a while. For those of you not in the know, the Mediterranean is a favoured route for refugees from the Levant and Africa to come to the EU. The most favoured points for landing are Italy and Greece. As per the Dublin Regulation (http://www.ecre.org/topics/areas-of-wor ... ation.html ), refugees have to claim asylum in the EU country where they landed. That means that certain countries deal with the majority of the humanitarian crisis. They have to rescue, feed, clothe and process. With the Syria crisis and the advent of ISIS, people started pouring in. But Italy had defunded its naval rescue mission "Mare Nostrum". Traffickers' practices and the lack of funds led to the death of 800 people in earlier this year (http://www.theguardian.com/world/2015/a ... a-massacre). The EU responded by sending their navies to provide help after that human disaster. While Italy and Greece are trying to deal with the new arrivals, Hungary has started erecting a fence to keep migrants out. Sweden and Germany take the most per-capita refugees per year (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-33972632). I don't know much about Sweden, but the news from Germany isn't good. We seem to have started fire-bombing proposed refugee-accommodation again, and it happens weekly. (If you know German: http://www.spiegel.de/thema/fluechtlinge/) France and the UK are experiencing their own troubles: (http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article ... rders.html - sorry, I know, it's the daily fail). And that's just scratching the surface. I'm sure I've left out loads, sorry. Thoughts? Opinions?
  11. "There is Deliverance and Hope for Muslims through accepting Jesus Christ our Lord!" I am a Christian.... but my mission in life has never been to convert anyone. They have their deity, I have mine. Can't we just leave it at that?!
  12. Some parents in our state are upset over a unit on Islam being taught in school. If a Christian child shouldn't be made to do an Islam assignment, then maybe a Muslim child shouldnt be made to do an assignment from the chapter on Christianity. It's not an attempt to convert ghees http://columbiadailyherald.com/news/loc ... curriculum
  13. Here we are. Thanks @Curious for creating the possibility to have this much needed discussion. I hope we will manage to be civil. I want to say a thing that I didn't say in tha Paris thread nor in the specularium to avoid to worsen things, but I really have to say it. I am mourning for what happened in Paris and to all the people who died and were wounded in any way, but I would like to see the same mourning of our European Institutions also for the hundreds who died at sea and on our shores trying to escape from the hell that ISIS is. With this I don't want to diminish the tragedy that happened in Paris but to remember and mourn all the lives whose loss was cause by this craziness, this monstrosity. Because all lives matter. I don't think Islam has ANYTHING to do with ISIS and its actions. I believe that as happened many times in history a religion is an excuse to perpetrate the worst.
  14. I watched most of the video, but this was just all sorts of all over the place. Cult practices, wealthy leader, weird, faux feminist views, with more make-up and plastic surgery, then a "House wifes of..." show. Mali hostage crisis

WaPo has breaking news that about 100 people are being held hostage at a hotel in Mali. https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/gunmen-storm-luxury-hotel-in-mali-in-hostage-standoff/2015/11/20/8c2cefd4-b86f-4d86-892d-4d7b3c2a0811_story.html?hpid=hp_hp-top-table-high_no-name%3Ahomepage%2Fstory I'm hoping for a positive outcome. PLEASE keep this thread for bona fide news updates and personal sympathies. The bickering can go in another thread in the new place.
  16. This is a very good article about the three stages of sharia law establishing itself. Stage one and stage two sound very similar to fundie modesty and headship pressure. It is an interesting and scary article. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/ayaan-hirsi-ali/the-price-of-modesty_b_8481776.html
  17. http://www.cnn.com/2015/09/24/middleeas ... ilgrimage/ When I first saw this story this morning the death count was at about 100, but it just keeps rising and at the time I'm writing this it's 717. This is an incredible tragedy and I just feel sick for everyone affected. It seems particularly horrible that it happened at Hajj, where pilgrims from all over the world have gathered to observe their religion. Because Hajj is a duty for all Muslims who are able to make the pilgrimage, a lot of people there are likely poor people who have saved their whole lives for this once in a lifetime trip. This isn't the only Hajj stampede incident, though, and not even the most deadly. There have been a number of similar incidents and I really hope this can be managed better in the future so this doesn't keep happening.

    Brunei Adopts Shari'a Law

I'm not sure if this is the right place to put this. Please move if needed. Brunei has now implemented Shari'a law. http://thediplomat.com/2014/05/brunei-i ... haria-law/ Apparently, there is some backlash associated with the Beverly Hills Hotel, but who knows how much press or influence that will have, if any. http://www.npr.org/blogs/thetwo-way/201 ... ills-hotel A whole new set of lives to be tortured.
  21. Here's a document written about apostasy in Islam. On pages 7 and 8, it clearly spells out that the penalty for apostasy (heresy) is death, and even goes to some lengths to argue that apostasy is treason and the person should be killed during this lifetime, and not just punished by Allah in the hereafter. http://www.docstoc.com/docs/97278293/Apostasy-in-Islam On page 20, there's also a claim that Baha'is aren't really being persecuted by the Iranian government - despite the overwhelming evidence to the contrary. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Persecutio ... %27%C3%ADs He's also written some lovely stuff about how the West is morally bankrupt for starting to accept homosexuals instead of giving them lashes or stoning them to death as required by Islam. He even throws in some junk science references to AIDS www.al-islam.org/marriage-and-morals-is ... osexuality Of course, women can avoid the lure of lesbianism simply by following his advice to marry early. Very, very early, since puberty is said to start at age 9 in girls. www.al-islam.org/marriage-and-morals-is ... lugh-rushd Here's more information about the author: jaffari.org/IslamInFocus/SayyidMuhammadRizvi.php These pamphlets is clearly listed as his publications, and he is clearly the Iman of the Jaffari Islamic Centre - which is a few minutes drive from my house, on my route to work.
  22. man this guy has a huge target pained on his back. But this is not a part of the world where you announce you are different. http://m.apnews.com/ap/db_268812/conten ... d=9nNZfsfE LAGOS, Nigeria (AP) - A Nigerian atheist released from the mental ward to which his Muslim family committed him by force said Thursday he is getting death threats for blaspheming against Islam. Mubarak Bala, a 29-year-old chemical process engineer, said he is in hiding in predominantly Muslim northern Nigeria where Shariah law holds and some interpretations have blasphemy punishable by death. "People are threatening me, I mean life-threatening threats," he told The Associated Press in a telephone interview. He said he was too frightened of drawing attention and wouldn't allow an AP video journalist or photographer to come to his hiding place. Bala said that since he renounced Islam and declared himself an atheist, he has not only lost the trust of his father and elder brother, but many friends. "Most of my friends condemn me and tell me I am bound for hell and that in an Islamic state, I would be killed. Blasphemy is a serious thing here," said Bala, who describes himself on his Twitter page as an ex-Muslim. Northeast Nigeria is in the throes of an insurgency by extremists bent on turning all Nigeria into an Islamic state under Shariah law, though half of Nigeria's 170 million people are Christian. The uprising has killed thousands and increased tensions between Muslims and Christians in a country where adherents of both faiths are passionately religious. Bala said he wants to leave northern Nigeria but first is trying to reconcile with his family, especially the father, two uncles and older brother who beat him up, drugged him and committed him to the psychiatric ward of Kano city's Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital. News of his plight came through tweets that he sent on a smuggled telephone from the hospital toilet. Businessman Bamidele Adeneye, who had been corresponding with Mubarak about humanism through social media before he was committed, saw one of his desperate SOS messages and mobilized help through the #FreeMubarak Twitter campaign and the London-based International Humanist and Ethical Union. Adeneye said he has also been getting death threats. "I'm getting calls from people who say 'Where do you live, we are coming to get you.'" But he said he would continue to help Mubarak because, "That man is intelligent, his only sin is being honest about what he believes." He helped organize help from Kano lawyer Muhammad Bello Shehu, who said he had been preparing to take Bala's case to court when the doctors discharged all patients because of a strike.

Muslim cashier refuses to sell alcohol

This story is causing a fuss in the British media this morning. Briefly, a Muslim cashier refused to serve a customer who wanted to buy a bottle of champagne in Marks & Spencer, because she would not touch alcohol due to her religion. I'm not sure how I feel about this - I mean, if you work in a food shop at Christmas you are probably going to be asked to sell a lot of alcohol. Then again, perhaps she should have been assigned work in a different part of the store. Thoughts? www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-25488259
