    Multiple seasons in a week

Over the past few days we've had multiple seasons in a week. We've had days where the temps got down in to the upper 40s for lows and low 60s for highs. Then this weekend it got nice and warm again. It was in the upper 80s yesterday afternoon around here and some spots in Iowa were up in the 90s. It was still warm out today around here with highs in the upper 70s. According to the NWS they're expecting us to be in the 70s and 80s next week. Might be seeing rain tonight and tomorrow then clear most of the week. I'll have to see what the weather does tomorrow after work if I'm gonna ride or not.

    Another August Thunderstorm

Seems like the worst warm weather stuff always hits right in August. We just had some bad storms roll through the area. Here's a screenshot of the NWS radar from about 45 minutes ago. We had wind and 1/4" hail here. No major damage that I can see to anything. Thought we were going to be without power and internet for a while but it came back before too long. Lots of electrical lines and trees down in the area. The worst of it was up north of where I am, such as up in Fayette county where there were collapsed buildings and roofs getting peeled off. Lots of people without power here. Temperature dropped 20 degrees over the past hour.

    It's Not Over Yet

Iowa is about to get hit with the winter storm that hit the Rockies not too long ago. Right now it looks like we're getting several inches of snow over the next couple days. I cut my job interview trip short and started to head back home, I'll have to do the interview on zoom. I was looking forward to meeting my potential new employer in person and checking out the town too. Ugh. Here in the upper Midwest it always seems like winter has one last blast before giving up and letting spring come in full time. In 2018 when I was in Minnesota for school we got hit by a blizzard in April which delayed me getting home for a day. Two weeks later I was mowing the lawn at home.

    Just Wait a Few Days

The old saying is if one doesn't like the weather in Iowa just wait a few days. We're not in the part of Iowa that's under a watch but my sister is down in Waukee.

Our first Winter 2020 snow storm

We had our first snowstorm of the season here Friday into Saturday. There was anywhere from 4.5 inches up to a little over 9 inches of snow. (We were in the spot that had 9 inches). They had about 50 cars going off the road during the storm. I went in town Friday afternoon to send in my work computer and take care of a couple other things. Including getting dinner for Saturday in case the weather was still bad Saturday evening. It was pretty much over by noon on Saturday and the roads were fine later that afternoon. I went out and got a bunch of pictures yesterday so I'd have good Christmas card photos. I hope the snow sticks around through the end of the year. My niece was out having a good time in the snow, rolling around and trying to eat all the snow in her parents yard.
  6. We had about 2.5 inches of snow last night into this morning where I am here in Iowa and our first winter weather advisory of the season locally. As usual with early season snowfalls it probably won't last all that long and melt right away. I knew something weather related was about to hit the fan yesterday when I saw a DOT truck out on the highway spraying down the northbound lanes with pre-treat and the southbound lanes had the streaks from that treatment already. If it does melt by Thursday I might be able to get my morning socially distant turkey trot in then.

    October Iowa Snowstorm

And down in Des Moines today they got pelted with up to nine inches of snow today. I have a friend in Cedar Rapids who had a picture of her back yard, which was completely covered with snow. We just had a slight dusting up here - my dad is a spotter for the NWS and he said we just had three tenths today. Seriously, Mother Nature, can you at least wait a few more weeks with the snow. Like in to November? Of course it's supposed to be pretty warm mid week. All four seasons in one week once again.

Out with the AC for the season

Yesterday I decided to pull out the window AC from my room. Because of the way the HVAC in the house was laid out my room doesn't get as much from the HVAC as the rest of the house, and I didn't want to switch to another room just because of that after fixing it up the way I liked. So in the summer I have a window unit in and in the winter a space heater going. So if it's 1000 degrees in the shade next week in Iowa, here's why. We have a joke here in Iowa that one can experience all four seasons in the same week, if you don't like the season just wait a day or two and your preferred season will come along. Of course the actual weather forecast is for 70s next week, and my room is perfectly fine at those temperatures. I have fans that I can use to help as well.

We got hit by a derecho

We had a line of thunderstorms roar through Iowa today. Bunch of trees are down throughout the state and a number of buildings were damaged - all by the high winds. Here's a slideshow of some of the damage from the NBC station, and one from the ABC station. A couple spots in our yard had some water but we didn't have much damage here. We didn't lose any trees or have other damage. My sister had called us from Des Moines to let us know the storms were pretty bad so we were able to bring chairs and stuff inside beforehand.

    Yeah Summer is Coming

I finally got around to putting in the window unit in my room today. (We have central air but the way the HVAC was designed I need a window unit to cool my room as my room is at the end and it can't keep up). I think this is about the latest I've put it in. Usually I put it in earlier so I'm not putting it in when it's 1,000 degrees in the shade.
  11. Winter isn't quite done with Iowa yet. We had snow off and on all day. It didn't amount to much and did not stick though when it hit the ground. What little did stick melted right away once the snow came out. I went for a quick bike ride this afternoon and the pavement was dry. Of course the wind gusts probably helped with that. On Easter Sunday it looks like we could have some more snow which might even be accumulating. A few inches are possible. I do have to say since we're all going to be stuck at home anyways this would be a good year for it. Save the nice weather on Easter for years when we can be around friends and family. We're far enough north that Easter weekend can vary considerably in the type of weather conditions experienced. Some years it's cold and generally a miserable time to be outside for any length of time. Other years no jacket is required and it's almost shorts and t-shirt weather on Easter. Some years the trees, grass, etc have not yet come back to life. Others the trees have their leaves and we've already mowed for the first time. Next year Easter is supposed to be on April 4. It will be interesting to see how the weather shakes out then. Hopefully it'll be a much more pleasant Easter that we can celebrate normally, with the horrors of Fuck Face and his fucked up response to the corona virus being in our rear view mirror.
  12. The Chief Justice of the Iowa Supreme Court died unexpectedly last week. Iowans gathered today for his memorial service.
  13. And it's not all from Steve King (R-Vichy Iowa)
  14. A judge has temporarily blocked Iowa's fancy new fetal heartbeat law from taking effect next month;
  15. The Iowa Caucuses are being held this evening. Of course the national media doesn't care because we don't have about a dozen idiots wanting to out Nazi each other like we did on the GOP side back in 2016, or the good people on the Democrats side who were running then. They're still on, even though the weather is supposed to be bad this evening. They're good to go to if for no other reason than to hang out with other Iowans who do not think that fuck face is the Lord Jesus Christ Park 2 and that Steve King and Rod Blum are not the greatest things since sliced bread. But still I'm not risking my life to go to one if the weather is bad. It'd be different if I lived in town and was within walking distance but since I don't it's not worth the risk. In a Presidential year I might be more willing to attend even if the weather's bad but this isn't one. We have a primary later this year but I wish we'd have that here for the Presidential as well because having the caucus the weather doesn't always cooperate and people who have to work can't go.
  16. Unfreaking believable iowastartingline.com/2017/02/13/police-officers-we-didnt-vote-republican-to-get-stabbed-in-the-back/ Jesus, at the rate I'm shoving Bennys, $50s, and $20s in the swear jar I'm going to be broke in no time. I'd tell these guys you made your fornicating bed, now go lie in the goddamn thing. Republicans made no secret of their disdain of unions from the get go, and cops actually thought it wouldn't affect their unions. They get what they deserve if the Iowa GOP guts labor protections.

  18. We can hold our own here in Iowa when it comes to weird news. Business owners Brad and Carrie Sapp discovered one Jordan Kajewski, 29, was stuck in their recycling center's chimney in Carroll, Iowa. kcci.com/news/firefighters-work-to-free-man-stuck-in-chimney/39610002
