    European politics

We haven't got a separate thread for European politics yet, so I thought I'd start one so we can discuss whatever is going on politically on this side of the pond. I'll start with today's big news from Italy: Italian PM Conte resigns Perhaps @laPapessaGiovanna can weigh in with more insight.
  2. Sounds like the military is attempting to take over the country. Military aircraft are flying low over the capital and there's reports of gunfire there as well. The bridges in Istanbul are blocked from traffic. Seems like this is in the early stages from the alerts I'm getting on my phone. Turkey’s Premier Reports ‘Attempted Coup’ After Military Activity In Cities - Huffington Post Turkey Coup Attempt - the Guardian (Live updates)
  3. Austrian Constitutional Court just decided that the elections that scared half Europe must be redone. Wtf? We just had brexit and now we risk the far right winning the elections in Austria. If I believed in god I'd start praying. https://www.theguardian.com/world/2016/jul/01/austrian-presidential-election-result-overturned-and-must-be-held-again-hofer-van-der-bellen
  4. Does anyone here besides me have a slight or not-so-slight infatuation with the royal families of Europe? Interesting to know they still exist, beyond the British Kate & William we tend to read more about in the U.S. press. The eventual queen of Sweden (after her grandfather the King and ger mother the Crown Princess) will be Princess Estelle of Sweden. I think she's four years old now and she is incredibly cute. Here's a picture of her with her parents. There are entire tumblr blogs devoted to her! Just another (more pleasant) rabbit hole to fall into.
  5. This has been going on for a while. For those of you not in the know, the Mediterranean is a favoured route for refugees from the Levant and Africa to come to the EU. The most favoured points for landing are Italy and Greece. As per the Dublin Regulation (http://www.ecre.org/topics/areas-of-wor ... ation.html ), refugees have to claim asylum in the EU country where they landed. That means that certain countries deal with the majority of the humanitarian crisis. They have to rescue, feed, clothe and process. With the Syria crisis and the advent of ISIS, people started pouring in. But Italy had defunded its naval rescue mission "Mare Nostrum". Traffickers' practices and the lack of funds led to the death of 800 people in earlier this year (http://www.theguardian.com/world/2015/a ... a-massacre). The EU responded by sending their navies to provide help after that human disaster. While Italy and Greece are trying to deal with the new arrivals, Hungary has started erecting a fence to keep migrants out. Sweden and Germany take the most per-capita refugees per year (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-33972632). I don't know much about Sweden, but the news from Germany isn't good. We seem to have started fire-bombing proposed refugee-accommodation again, and it happens weekly. (If you know German: http://www.spiegel.de/thema/fluechtlinge/) France and the UK are experiencing their own troubles: (http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article ... rders.html - sorry, I know, it's the daily fail). And that's just scratching the surface. I'm sure I've left out loads, sorry. Thoughts? Opinions?

    European Refugee Crisis Redux

(Note: I started a separate thread because I didn't want to dredge up old ugliness, plus I couldn't remember if that thread had to be locked. If this needs to be merged, feel free.) Various news sources are reporting that Europe has passed a milestone: more than one million refugees entering in 2015. http://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-35158769 How do countries meet the needs of this population without adversely affecting other populations? Has anyone read any material with workable solutions? The infrastructure and logistical issues make my head spin, but the human element makes my heart ache. I'm wondering where others are in their thinking? (At the risk of being pedantic: I'm interested in a discussion with facts and demonstrable information, along with well-developed personal opinions. I have no interest in screeds or rants and would hope people would respect each other and humanity enough to think before posting.)
