    Guidance for Wanna be Crocheter

Hi Everyone! I'm thinking about taking up crocheting, but I want to do the "lace/thread"(?) kind. Love the scarves and shawls, etc.. I need something to keep my hands busy when I'm just hanging out. I crocheted many, many years ago, but it was just simple granny squares made of yarn. I also sew and do cross stitch and fabric piece work (quilt tops only...hate the actual quilting part), but ironically I don't LIKE the look of either, just like the mechanics of doing it. So, I need recommendations for books, videos, patterns, materials, advice (such as...you're insane!) to get me going. Can anybody help?

    My latest project

My SIL saw this on FB and asked me to make her one. She is just getting started with raising chickens and thought this apron would be nice to have. It has 19 pockets for eggs and a larger single pocket for cell phone/notepad/anything. The pattern is here: https://hearthookhome.com/an-egg-cellent-apron-free-crochet-pattern/
  5. Has anyone learned/tried any new knitting or crocheting techniques or stitches lately, or taught any to others? Did they work out well or are they something to share in stuff-I-fucked-up? Yesterday I taught 2 people in our knitting club at work the SSK. What was great is that I FINALLY learned why it doesn't always work for me and why I don't like it: I sometimes put the left needle in the back when I should put in front when knitting the 2 stitches on the right needle together (after having slipped them onto the right needle). Now I will feel more confident in using this technique, which gives the opposite slant to that of a K2tog. It is really cool that there seems to be a resurgence of interest in the yarn arts, at least where I am located. It is such a stress reliever, at least for me and I have found that the feeling I get when knitting and crocheting is similar to that of certain types of meditation. Anyone else feel the same?

    Crochet Swiffer Covers

Found this pattern the other day. Getting ready to make a boatload of these for everyone. Thought I would pass it on in case anyone gets tired of paying for Swiffer sheets. http://dragonfaeriee.blogspot.com/2009/01/swoofer.html
  7. I've homeschooled for the last seven years and have worked full-time as long as I can remember. My youngest son went into public school in August. I'm working a little less this winter because I'm going through a series of surgeries, so I need a lighter workload. That means I suddenly have free time. Not necessarily a lot -- but enough that I feel a little lost. I will eventually volunteer a bit at my son's school, but I can't really commit to anything until my surgeries are finished. So until then, I've turned into a crafting fool. Current projects? I'm crocheting a cocoon shrug (and maybe two if I like the way this one turns out because I can never have enough cozy things in the winter) for me. I'm also crocheting a set of guinea pigs (to match my youngest son's actual guinea pigs) for a Christmas present for him. He is piggy OBSESSED. I am hoping to finish the inside of a dollhouse I started working on last summer (2015 not 2016). I am also coloring like a maniac thanks to not one but TWO incredible deals I got on Lolliz gel pens, which happen to be a special favorite of mine (plus I just got Johanna Basford'sMagical Jungle, so, you know) . And I owe my middle son a knitted scarf, which is about the only thing I can actually knit because I am not terribly knitting adept. Oh, and sewing! Well, this is more a chore I need to do. I have to hem up some jeans for my sons, who all have skinny waists and ridiculously long inseams. Any more suggestions on how to fill my time? Something tells me that if I can find enough new crafts to do, I can still find ways to NOT have to do housework. This is my plan ...

    Crochet

I want to make an afghan. Does anyone know a good book for a beginner? How much yarn do I need? What are those hook things called? Where do I order yarn? Is one brand better than others?
  9. I am looking for a good crochet pattern for a nice, cozy, queen sized afghan. I've been meaning to make one for our bed for forever. I have the yarn already, but no pattern. I would say my skill level is intermediate and I'm open to pretty much anything - other than patterns with squares and strips and stuff you need to sew together. I'd like a one-piece pattern. Anybody have a suggestion?

    More help! Sleeves

I need help translating a crochet pattern from Greek to something I understand. SLEEVES Ch 28 (30, 32). Row 1: Hdc in 3rd ch from hook and every ch across, turn – 26 (28, 30) hdc. Row 2: Ch 2, hdc in each hdc across – 26 (28, 30) hdc. Repeat Row 2, increase1 st each side every 4th row 4 (6, 8) times – 34 (40, 46) sts. Work even until piece measures 612 (712, 1012), end with a wrong side row. Fasten off. Where should I do this increase? At the ends? I've never made a sleeve before.
  11. I need to make something cute for an impending baby girl. Anyone have a pattern they think is awesome they would like to share? ETA: Crochet preferred, but n00b!friendly knitting would be ok too.
  12. No one is going to show off any finished projects? I will start. This is a dress, diaper cover and hat I made for my much loved veterinarian's first baby in Nov.
