  1. Apologies if someone's already posted this, but I feel like this deserves its own thread. Since Steve Bannon wants the media to not say mean things about the regime, and wants to run the country into the ground I think it's appropriate that everyone knows he's also a shitty person in his private life. I've found, for your perusal and disgust, some links that have, redacted, court papers about his divorce procedings as well as child support proceedings from his second ex-wife, Mary Louise Piccard. They're a hard read, but here are some highlights: - Underpaid or outright didn't pay his child/spousal support. When he was making $500,000 a year, and had a lot more money than that, so he really had no excuse. -Went for long periods of time without contact with his daughters -Acted abusively towards daughters when he did see them. -Threatened administrators of schools where daughters would be enrolled. Flipped out over the possibility of his daughters attending school where Jewish children attended. -This is less confirmable, but apparently he told Piccard he would not marry her if amniocentesis did not come back normal https://theopporeport.com/2016/12/02/the-bannon-files-divorce-records-reveal-marital-discord-and-questionable-parenting/ In addition, here's a link to a police report about Bannon choking Piccard. She dropped charges because he threatened her, from what I understand. http://www.politico.com/f/?id=00000156-c3f8-dd14-abfe-fbfbbe310001 I'm not necessarily the quickest to believe everything, but to be honest it looks like Piccard has her story straight and it's not like Bannon has denied it. If we see fit, maybe we could put these in a sticky, a la the Josh Duggar police reports? I think it's important for these docs to be out there, especially with everything going on.
  2. An enquiry commissioned by the German Bishops and comducted by Universities of Giessen, Heidelberg and Mannheim finds more than 3600 minors were abused by clergy since 1947. And more than half of them were younger than 13yo when abused. Enquiry also says that real numbers are probably much higher. http://time.com/5394761/germany-catholic-church-sex-abuse-cases/
  3. Anyone else read the article recently released by Buzzfeed News? https://www.buzzfeednews.com/article/christinekenneally/orphanage-death-catholic-abuse-nuns-st-josephs?bftwnews&utm_term=4ldqpgc#4ldqpgc It's brutal. In the focus on sexual abuse by priests, a lot of the other types of abuse perpetrated and covered up by the Church are being swept aside.
  4. Hi all, I wanted to reach out because I recently published a book called Angels Can't Swim that focuses on abuse, sexuality, and mental health in college swimmers. If you are interested please check it out! Thanks and have a great day. https://alexandramccann02.wixsite.com/mysite
  5. I'm not familiar with Abedini's ministry per se, just knew about his imprisonment in Iran. Would appreciate more info from those who may know about or of him. So, not posting this for snarking but rather to say, once again, here is a fundamentalist Christian male -- himself persecuted for his religious beliefs -- victimizing his wife. From Christianity Today (http://www.christianitytoday.com/ct/2015/november-web-only/pastor-saeed-abedini-wife-naghmeh-halts-public-advocacy.html?start=1): If that weren't all enough for one person to bear, then there's this, reported last month (http://www.christianpost.com/news/naghmeh-abedini-under-attack-christians-muslims-147974/):
  6. Looks like IHOP (International House of Prayer - not the pancake place) has a Pastor with a history of sexual abuse working for them. Um, the language this place uses is just... yeah. And it looks like the victim is coming out with this due to Me Too. http://www.kansascity.com/news/local/article202020974.html
  7. http://www.freejinger.org/topic/30529-turpins-13-shackled-kids/ Continued from : http://www.freejinger.org/topic/30529-turpins-13-shackled-kids/?page=24 The info thus far is that there were 13 kids in varying degrees of abused, in the house. The parents have been charged. I'll let FJ update anything additional.

  9. This BBC report is from 2015, but I doubt that the situation has changed in two years: http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p031v90d It states that two girls under fourteen give birth in Paraguay every day. Hardly any of the girls profiled in the report are properly in their teens, and they usually became pregnant through abuse by a family member. Abortion is illegal due to Catholic influence, but the bigger issue appears to be widespread acceptance of family abuse combined with ignorance about sex. It's postulated that Paraguay's military dictatorship normalized the sexual abuse of very young girls. After listening to this, I want to research NGOs that are dealing with these issues, a sort of anti-SOS if you will.
  10. Denny "Beefy McBratwurst" Hastert is going to jail. cnn.com/2016/04/27/politics/dennis-hastert-sentencing/index.html I'm glad that he's going to jail. But there are people in the can for shoplifting or smoking a J who got longer sentences than Hastert did for his crimes.

    Word of Faith Fellowship

http://www.charlotteobserver.com/news/state/north-carolina/article134790299.html In short, the Word of Faith Fellowship is a church that's come under investigation for severe abuse, often manifesting as "blasting", where congregants literally beat the shit out of someone to expel demons. Sexual, spiritual, and emotional abuse also abound. Victims are trained from an early age to lie to authorities. Nearly all the members were encouraged to live in the same town so as to keep the community isolated. Most people interviewed for the article had been brought into the cult as children, and have been cut off from their families for leaving. In my area, too. Jeezy creezy.
  12. Because the news wasn't full of enough weird, creepy news: https://www.buzzfeed.com/jimderogatis/parents-told-police-r-kelly-is-keeping-women-in-a-cult?utm_term=.iqA44w0Nz7#.ppLKKZXLNq Since the women involved are adults and can join any sort of organization they want, there's not much that can be done from a legal perspective unless Kelly has done something demonstrably illegal. I guess we'll see how this story unfolds.

    Boy Drowns at Fairhaven Baptist

A 12 year old boy just drowned in the pool at Fairhaven Baptist Church while there were 2 adults in the pool. This is the place that CNN covered in there piece about abuse in the name of religous disclipline, along with Hephzibah House. Fairhaven has a connected school and college.
  14. I was torn on where to put this since this discusses a variety of articles but placed it in here. Spiritual abuse, Physical Abuse. Sexual Abuse. A Pastor with his own church that was in massive debt. I drive past Tri-City Christian Church when I go to/from KC via I70 - I recognize the steeple in the picture with the article. I'm going to have to resist the urge to drive by and throw things now. The Pitch is an alternative newspaper in Kansas City. FYI this is a long article. http://www.pitch.com/news/feature-story/article/20854225/tricity-ghosts-school-vouchers-raise-the-possibility-of-diverting-money-into-abusive-faith-communities One highlight er lowlight: and - they are quoting Boz Tchividjian (we have a thread on him, don't we?) quite heavily in this.

    MedicalKidnap.com

I know this site has been brought up in threads of various fundie families (Rembis, Naugler, etc), but I'd like a space to talk about the site itself and the lesser-known cases it features. Brief intro for those unfamiliar: Medical Kidnap is a website purporting to share stories of families who have been "torn apart" when their children were "kidnapped" for medical reasons. Typically it's stuff like refusing to vaccinate, not taking perfectly healthy children to the doctor, living off-grid, faith healing, etc. The stories often follow a specific format - the children are 100% happy, healthy, and loved, a neighbor or medical professional reports them to CPS for some unknown reason, CPS comes and takes their kids away immediately without any proof of the allegations, kids are split up into various foster homes and all are immediately abused, and the parents do every single thing asked of them but CPS keeps changing the requirements/timelines/rules so they can never get everything done and pursues TPR so they can get the boatloads of cash the government gives them for putting kids up for adoption. Aaaaaaand DISCUSS!

    Acquiring a pet fundy

One of the first things I noticed while lurking on Free Jinger, beyond the overwhelming number of fundamentalist families beyond the Duggars I'd no idea existed, was the board culture. I spent some time in the SOTDRT learning definitions and what board culture means. One of the phrases used confused me though: pet fundy/fundie. What the heck does that mean?? Is it the fundy fam you love to hate, the fundy you secretly love but hate (in that hate the sin not the sinner sort of way), the fundy you hate the most? I have decided it's one of those phrases that means what it means to the individual, though the definition I have seen most is the fundy family you follow most. I have looked for my pet fundies. I've scoured the archives, reading about families when I was interested in them on a current thread so decided to further educate myself about their antics. I've educated myself on Zsu zsu Anderson and her Pissing Preacher. Ugh, child-abusing bitch, I can't follow them for wanting to go there and snatch her bald-headed. Lauren and her travelling circus of irresponsible parenting? Grrr, the neglect those kids are put through! Erika Shupe and the jelly bean reward system? POW! To the moon with her! The Nauglers? No, the proximity makes the idea of driving up and 1. rescuing those poor kids 2. cut a bitch (a phrase I'd never felt any connection to until I read about Joe and Nicole) just a bit too do-able for my comfort. The Maxwells? Where to even start?! The Duggar/Bates? Nope, nope no. The cover up of child sexual abuse is more than I can stand. I'd just about decided on Jilly Rod until I saw what she's done to her poor sister Amy in the past year. The blatant Jill of it all is just more than I can bear. I don't know if I just have such a low tolerance for child abuse and neglect, patriarchy and the objectification of women, victim blaming, non-education of minds begging for knowledge, the enormous egos involved and the rampant sexuality in the purity culture that I can't pick out my pet fundy(s). I don't know how the rest of you did it, deciding which family you would expose the ugly underbelly of their hypocrisy to the cold light of day. Right now, I'm spending more time hate-reading about LoriKen, the never learning egomaniacs. Having some brain damage that sometimes affects my mood and behavior is probably the link that clicked for me with Lori and her brain tumor issues. Also, while she is still giving out heartbreakingly terrible advice to women on her blog, at least she is unable to directly abuse children as hers are grown and gone. That's a big issue for me, so there's that. For me, my pet fundy is defined by my ability to be dragged into their life suck. I don't love to hate them, I don't know that I really hate hate them either, though I utter, "What a fucking bitch!" at least once when I read a new installment on her blog. I'm not much surer of what a pet fundy is now than I was on the first day at FJ, but I know who my pet fundy is, at long last.
  19. This article is making the rounds among the theatre community. Massive trigger warning for abuse and assault. http://www.chicagoreader.com/chicago/profiles-theatre-theater-abuse-investigation/Content?oid=22415861 Long story short: The artistic director of Profiles Theatre in Chicago used his position to have sexual relationships with actresses (almost all of which turned abusive) and inflict violence on his fellow actors on stage. The co-artistic director enabled the abuse to happen. The actresses kept quiet out of fear of hurting their careers, and because the theatre was non-Equity until 4 years ago. Without the actors' union, there were few official channels for them to seek help. I have written here in the past about how I took my dream job at a theatre last year, and the odd/worrying behavior of my boss. I am leaving my contract when it ends at the end of this month. My boss was never violent like the man in the article, but my friends, family, and therapist have helped me to see that his behavior towards me was emotionally abusive. The isolation, intimidation, and gaslighting featured in the article felt very familiar, as well as the lack of oversight by any kind of board. I am so fucking pissed that people are advising me to "be professional" by keeping quiet about his behavior. Frankly, everyone in the local theatre community knows he's terrible, but they have to maintain good relations because there are only so many professional theatre opportunities in the area.

200 girls kidnapped...for going to school

http://www.nbcnews.com/news/world/boko- ... snhp&pos=1 Reglious fundies. They are against girls going to school. They think a woman's place is in the home. They hate the goverment. I'm trying to think, where I have heard of people with simliar ideas in America...hmmm?
  21. In a new and decidedly rare interview with NPR, Woody Allen opens up about his relationship with his Wife and former [but not legal] step-daughter, Soon-Yi Previn, and their marriage of 20 years. Included, are his candid remarks of how it all began, in his mind, as "a fling". In a 2011 interview , he said Funny, he uses the term, "fell in love with this girl", instead of "my girlfriend of twelve-years' daughter". Convenient. Also convenient that he reportedly stopped his weekly psychoanalysis upon the start of the relationship with Soon-Yi. Think again! The only reason I do not "carry that external baggage into the theater" is because I simply do not go - God-forbid he see profit from his "inspiration". Granted I am younger, at one time I enjoyed a film or two. That is, until I learned the "10 Undeniable Facts About the Woody Allen Sexual-Abuse Allegation" [4]. And I will not see his upcoming 3000th movie. What about you?! Do you still see his films? I feel that the notion that his films are too great to be weighed down by ethical concerns is bullshit. His "nice guy" style of sexism is still just that - sexism. Sources: [1] Original NPR Interview. http://www.npr.org/2015/07/29/426827865 ... -best-work [2] Reuters, June 22, 2011. 22. This just came across my newsfeed. Horrible, horrible case. Trigger alert for child abuse. http://foxsanantonio.com/news/local/toddlers-found-chained-tied-up-outside-bexar-county-home I think this is breaking news, so there are not many details. All together, 8 children from 2-13 were found on the premises, with the two toddlers chained up like dogs outside. At midnight. There's a special place in Hell for whoever would treat children like this. The spokesman for the sheriff's department couldn't even speak about it without crying. ETA: I'm so glad that these children are now being cared for and helped.
  23. Yes, I know...no surprises here.... http://www.huffingtonpost.com/kelly-ladd-bishop/male-headship-theology-enables-abusers_b_9463150.html "Dr. Tucker also points out that an abusive husband is never going to give his wife permission to leave and take the children with her. The idea that an abused wife can address the abuse in a spirit of submission is absurd and dangerous. She should not be encouraged in any way to submit to this situation. However, complementarian theology does just that. It takes away her autonomy and authority, and therefore renders her vulnerable and powerless."

    Strong City Cult

My gateway fundie group is not one that has been discussed here before . . . the Lord Our Righteousness Church, a Seventh Day Adventist derivative in northeastern New Mexico. They ate a very sparing vegetarian diet; the women wore long hair, long skirts, and no makeup; by some standards, they were considered a millennial cult. Strong City (another name) achieved fame/notoriety in 2007 when a documentary was produced by Ben Anthony and it aired on National Geographic. (I've linked to part one on Youtube - you should be able to go through the other parts with the menu on the right.) There was a follow-up documentary which I will dig out. The revelations in the documentary lead to a police investigation; eventually, their leader, Wayne Bent (Michael), was sent to prison because of the criminal sexual contact he had with underage members. I have been hesitant to discuss them here because MANY members of the church moved on and are now out in society, living their lives. I want to respect that and not invade their privacy. Of any group I've ever read about, the LOR put more out on the web (many page still available through Wayback) and the followers were as facile in social networking as any organization I've seen. They also have a predilection for changing their names - Travesser is their chosen surname (for the whole group.) Wayne Bent was released from prison in February: http://www.abqjournal.com/724888/news/religious-sect-leader-wayne-bent-is-out-of-prison.html He is apparently back on the LOR property, and back to producing his word salad on the interwebz: https://waynebent.com/ And I see that followers have again begun defending him on news stories. So - what happens to a cult when a leader is removed from the community and then returns? How has this group's belief system affected people long-term? That's what fascinates me. (And don't be surprised if someone shows up here - they are very assertive about people discussing them.)
