  1. Channel 4 have a new docu-series featuring people who live in the Rockland Ranch community in Utah. This episode is about Enoch Foster and his wives Katrina and Lilian, and their 16 children. The family is courting a potential new wife, Lydia. http://www.channel4.com/programmes/three-wives-one-husband
  2. Good for him I guess but he's not apologizing for hurting people with the woo
  3. Sam Young, the man who started the Protect LDS Children movement, will most likely be excommunicated from the Mormon church today (Sunday September 9th) At the very least, he will be disclipined, unable to take the sacrement, go to the temple, etc. People are polarized, with many supporting him in his wish for LDS bishops to stop asking tweens sexual questions behind closed doors without parental supervision, while others think he is stirring the shitpot. Others are upset that he will receive church disclipine or be removed completely fromthe church for bringing these issues to light, while a former leader who admitted to sexual misconduct is able to be in full standing in the church. Twitter and the ExMormon Reddit page are really active with hashtags like #Istandwithsam and #protectldschildren
  4. Fundamentalist Mormons were my first group that got me interested. I have studied A LOT about FLDS/bountiful/Kingston etc. However I have never heard of the Knights of the Crystal Blade?!? These girls were ages 4-8 seriously?!!?!?! Be prepared mentally this is a huge rabbit hole, https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/crime/self-styled-utah-prophet-gets-additional-15-year-prison-term/ar-AAzhXwd
  5. Paul Swenson, husband of a minor lifestyle- and mommy-blogger Ashlee Swenson has gone missing under strange circumstances. Something seems off about the way the family is acting, but that may just be part of the "keeping up appearances" aspect of their community: They are at least somewhat Mormon (He went on a mission.) Anyway, the alcohol and drug paraphernalia found in the car is definitely not his. Ashlee is 24 and Paul is 30. They married when she was 18. Last month, Ashlee posted a blog where she alluded to Paul cheating on her. The family has a heavily moderated Facebook page and a GoFundMe (even though they appear to be quite wealthy.) Here's a Reddit discussion thread about the disappearance. Bonus WTFery: They're just a wholesome family that enjoys some occasional blackface. Adorable. My gut is telling me he just ran off like some men do when shit gets real. But with possible drug and marriage issues... Who knows? Please note, it might take 23 years or more to find out the truth. Hopefully all those links are kosher. THE END.

Mormon Church to leave Boy Scouts

USA Today <snip> <snip> I had no idea participating in Boy Scouts was such a significant part of growing up in the Mormon faith for boys. I don't believe for a second that this has nothing to do with Boy Scouts choosing to embrace LGBTQ+ youth.
  7. Has anyone else taken notice that a number of famous YouTubers are from Utah and are Mormon? Ones that come to my mind are: *April and Davey-5 kids, Mormon, have a couple YT channels and hit it big. *Ellie and Jared-their family has hit it big as well-sister Ruby of 8 Passengers, some other siblings also, but not sure their channels. 8 Passengers is a bundle of crazy, so if you never watched them, I advise against it. *What's Inside-dad and son, Mormons living in Utah, started the channel and have hit it super big just cutting things open. *Tannerites-which is an unfortunate name, but they have 7 children, hit with the YT gravy train and don't give a shit about their privacy. I did one google search with the dad's name and instantly their names and children's names and their address came up and I did not seek that out, which concerns me for his family. FYI, one video was all I watched and I got their names and where their children go to school because their parents were stupid enough to show the school in plain view, which is why I did the search. Maybe I am just paranoid, but it unnerves me how little they care about their privacy or their children's safety. Neither parent seems to work though they never say what they do to afford 7 children and that nice house before YT while not working. And just a little obvious note, eldest Branson is about 19, the parents are 36 and married for just about 17 years. Yeah, think you can do the math. Also big Mormons. There are others also, but am surprised by how many channels with large numbers of subscribers are Mormons. Suppose it's the large family aspect that draws people in? The desire to likely convert others via their vlogs is a bit concerning, but considering how crazy most of them are, don't think they will win many over if that's the eventual goal.
  8. On January 17th, Terri Gross on Fresh Air (NPR) interviewed Pulitzer Prize-winning historian Laurel Thatcher Ulrich, author of "A House Full Of Females: Plural Marriage And Women's Rights In Early Mormonism." Click HERE to read full text or listen to a podcast.
  9. During some pioneer trek re-enactment, a young Mormon mom died from complications from the heat in Oklahoma. This is something that mainstream Mormons do often in the summer as a "spiritual" thing to better identify with their pioneer ancestors. http://www.deseretnews.com/article/865656625/Mormon-youth-leader-dies-on-trek-outing-in-Oklahoma.html
  10. http://www.sltrib.com/home/3459506-155/national-bar-group-looking-into-discrimination I'm not surprised by this at all.

    Mormon baptisms

I'm not sure if this is the right board to post this in. I have an adult friend who's being baptized into the Mormon church soon and she wants me to attend her baptism. I have pretty much no knowledge on Mormonism, and I was wondering what I should expect when I'm there ? Can some Mormon/ex-Mormon fjer's give me some guidance?
  12. The Mormon church is doubling down on its position on gay marriage, declaring that gay couples are apostates AND finding that children of same sex couples cannot be blessed or baptized (blessings are normally done for infants and baptism around age eight). WaPo story on the subject (See Huntsman's daughter's comments)

    Mormon temple garments explained

Happened across this interesting tidbit on Mormon underwear http://news.yahoo.com/mormons-address-m ... 28671.html LDS is fighting back, after all these years of secrecy.
  14. I realize that this is pretty lengthy and time-consuming, but I decided to post it anyway, because it is really interesting and worth watching. I am not a fan of the show, but Benji Schwimmer apparently was the winner of one of the early seasons of SYTYCD. He is an openly gay dancer/choreographer, and in the following videos, he shares his perspective as a gay man who grew up in the LDS church. We talk a lot about how fundies might be treated if they came out as lgbt, or how their family and church would react...he answers pretty much all of the questions that come with the territory of ultra-religious communities and homosexuality. Anyways, the total viewtime is around 5 1/2 hours, but again, it's kind of a unique interview. If you don't want to watch all of it, I recommend skipping through to part 3.
  15. I knew the LDS church was a big part of the boy scouts but I never knew how big. They account for more then 1/3 of the scout troops sponsored. I guess the LDS church is considering (they aren't saying it is because of any recent equality issues, but good timing?) making their own scout program. My Non-LDS son was in an LDS scout group. It sure had deep pockets. I offered to pay since I'm not LDS but members paid for everything for every boy and many extras, like renting airplanes, and donating incredible camp sites that non-lds troops (like the elks and catholic church troops) used. Here is the debate article going on in Utah right now. http://www.sltrib.com/home/2778130-155/ ... g-bsa-will
  16. The LDS church has just made a donation to an LGBT community center in Salt Lake City: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2015/07/0 ... 13568.html

  18. Has anyone heard of this guy? I came across his name looking through the Brown family wreath. He is a Mormon who leads a small group of followers. I gather they sometimes practice polygamy. He claims he is the reincarnation of Hyrum Smith and has even gotten a descendent of Smith's hooked. That little lady gave Chris her burial plot near Hyrum so he can put up a tombstone for himself and Hyrum- since they are the same person. Nemelka claims that he has unsealed the sealed portion of Joseph Smith's revelations. He is/was a polygamist, con artist and scammer, likely mentally unstable. I can't get a read on how many followers he has. Most of the critics I am finding are regular old Mormons who think he is perverting their religion. I don't see a lot of non-LDS info on him out there. Here's a start: chrisnemelka.com/timeline-2/ More info: chrisnemelka.com/category/lies-deceit/ http://www.cityweekly.net/utah/sealed-f ... lText=true
  19. My oldest friend, who is a devout Mormon, just shared this. Her son helped teach Prince Ata while on his mission to Tonga. She's very proud because converting this guy is apparently a big deal. Not breaking link because it's a news site. http://www.nzkanivapacific.co.nz/2015/0 ... PXsKPnF9q0
  20. cracked posted this today http://www.cracked.com/article_19595_5- ... ure_module
  21. A two hour documentary on Tuesday 12/30 at 9pm on lifetime movie network. Saw a commercial for it tonight. Three sisters from the Kingston Clan (a very private and abusive sect) who left and are trying to help others leave. mylifetime.com/movies/escaping-polygamy
  22. I have to say, I didn't see this one coming. They're even coming clean about Helen Mar Kimball. Not breaking the link because it's Gawker, and I strongly suspect that at least one of their writers reads here, anyway. Mormon Church: Joseph Smith Had 40 Wives, Including 14-Year-Old
  23. Kate Kelly, the leader of the Ordain Women movement and John Dellin are facing possible excommunication from the Mormon/LDS church. I had a feeling the leaders would eventually do this at some point. Not breaking since it is the New York Times http://www.nytimes.com/2014/06/12/us/tw ... .html?_r=1
  24. So I have finally been visited by Mormon missionaries- one from Texas and one from Utah. They seemed nice, and they seemed so shocked when I know the name of their founder and when I told them I was a gasp! agnostic. I wished I had the nerve to ask them why they believe that gold plates found in the US are credible . Can the Hive Vagina suggest me questions I can ask them if they ever come a'calling again?
  25. The forum is named 'Mormons - Mormonism' the church is called Later Day Saints or LDS for short. You do not call the any other religious group by a slang name.
