  1. Is anyone else watching The Family on Netflix? I'm only two episodes in, but in the first episode alone they touch on a lot of subjects I've seen come up here: very strict American fundie "gender" role expectations, resistance to The World™️, and what's so great about the story of David. I'm not big on the use of reenactments, but it's interesting to see this niche-ish interest of mine so explicitly on Netflix. Anyone else have any thoughts on this?
  2. I just wanted to have a thread for this classy lady. Tonight we learned about the Bowling Green Massacre. I just want to leave my condolences to everyone affected by this tragedy. I'm really hoping to hear from Fredrick Douglass regarding this event.
  3. Since Mike Pence has his own controversies swirling around him, I thought I would start a thread for the slimy, hypocritical weasel: Pence insists that his email scandal is totally different from Hillary's: http://www.rawstory.com/2017/03/pence-says-his-private-email-use-was-not-the-same-as-clintons/ I hate that man so much. What a sleazebag.
  4. Continued from here: Pence is definitely spouting the party line. Of course, he forgets about the impact all the Mango Moron's tariffs are having on average Americans.

    European politics

We haven't got a separate thread for European politics yet, so I thought I'd start one so we can discuss whatever is going on politically on this side of the pond. I'll start with today's big news from Italy: Italian PM Conte resigns Perhaps @laPapessaGiovanna can weigh in with more insight.
  6. Anthony Scaramucci has been appointed the new WH Communications Director, so I thought a new thread would be appropriate. Trump picks financier Scaramucci to head White House communications: official Scaramucci is quite the controversial character. He's been rejected for a WH office before because of ethical conflicts, but these don't seem to be a problem for this position. Sean Spicer has resigned over his appointment, which apparently wasn't run by Bannon (who reportedly is fuming) and Rancid Penis hates his guts. So, just another day in the office of the WH, as usual.
  7. Now that the Democrats have the majority in the House of Representatives, I think it would be fair to give the House its own thread. In it, we can post about all the many important investigations the House Committees will be holding in the coming months, and any other important news, like this: I'd like to know who those seven Repugliklans were.

    Impeachment Inquiry

Rufus, please let this be true: "The impeachment inquiry Trump has feared is here"
  9. I have to do this, so here it is. Let's talk about our most confusing First Lady. Last night as I was going to bed, I was very depressed about the Republicans' latest attempt to kill Americans and wondered if I would have trouble sleeping. But then appeared on my TV the Flotus making a speech while wearing a hot pink pool float! I laughed myself to sleep. There's so much to ponder about her. The marital handshake. What she does all day. Why she's even here. But the thing that really confounds me is how a woman of her means can continually miss the mark fashion-wise. She either looks like she's auditioning for the Top Gun remake or heading out for a formal soirée with some Manhattan high society muckety-mucks. She likes to hide her hands and only has flats or stilettos, there's no in between. She also seems to have some weird fetish about changing clothes on airplanes. Someone help her!
  10. So, in the Brexit thread I expressed infuriation with the fact that, at least in my country, people often treat the idea of protecting our environment as a joke. I have some ideas as to why this is. Obviously, the overwhelming resistance from the people currently in power who massively benefit from the fossil fuel and motor industries as well as lax anti-pollution laws. It's like every time there is a step forwards the media will rush to portray the scientists and activists as pessimists or doom-sayers. It's annoying that people won't look at the evidence on their own and think beyond "it's annoying to have to separate my household waste" and see that we have to take this all the way to the very top to even begin to make a difference. People feel powerless and just give up when it's pretty bloody imperative to not give up in the face of mass extinction events and environmental collapse. I also wonder if it's down to science, nature and other connected topics being portrayed as "geeky" and "uncool". I think my generation suffered from a very aggressive kind of anti-intellectualism where we were taught that it was only "cool" to know just enough to get yourself into uni/a good job. This was especially true among girls in my age group. My father always valued education just for the sake of learning something so I was in a pretty small minority in my town (but then again, it had a large number of oil workers) in that I enjoyed learning about the world and how it all fits together. I remember being laughed at by a group of girls in my school because I asked for a recycling bin to put our bottles and cans in. Apparently, it's not cool to care. I think it's great that we now have young women like Greta Thunberg standing up and talking about all this in a very eloquent and well-informed way but they also come in for a horrific amount of abuse as a result. Some of this is possibly down to sexism and the idea that teenage girls should somehow be only interested in boys and other "acceptable" interests. I have also experienced first hand the reaction adults have to being questioned by young people when I was her age, equal parts horror and a sort of rage that you would even dare. I love the fact that young people, in general, seem to be starting to question adults more. Now all we need is to take these young people seriously and encourage them. This might be a very long time coming but I hope that my generation will at least be better at it than my parents'. I think a big part of the issue is fear of change. The fact is that everyone will have to make changes to their lifestyle to make this work. Even when you suggest to people that towns and cities be structured to prioritise public vehicles like buses and trams then you are met with a bunch of people telling you why it will never work. They are unable to imagine the idea that better and more available public transport might make cars obsolete in cities because they have always needed to take a car to get around or have never bothered to use public transport at all. Also, the idea of becoming a less wasteful society seems to make people angry or pessimistic. The biggest elephant in the room seems to be that our entire civilisation is now structured around cheap, replaceable stuff that we often only use once or twice then throw away. Everything from the fashion industry to electronics needs to make us want to just buy more and more stuff just so that their (terrible) business models can remain intact. On one hand, people will usually admit that it is utterly bonkers that Primark will sell you a shirt for £3 that will disintegrate after a few washes but on the other they will just shrug and head right out to buy more shirts that can only be worn a couple of times. Then right at the top, everything seems so impossible to change that people end up just bickering over the minutiae like plastic straws rather than campaigning for things like an end to fossil fuels. It's like how people in cities KNOW that diesel-fuelled engines are contributing to conditions like asthma and lung cancers but they don't see the point in putting pressure on the government to completely ban these vehicles. I once ended up talking to a taxi driver about how he knows the polluted air around city centre taxi ranks is damaging his health but he won't ever swap his diesel car and neither will any other taxi driver because then he will have to get used to a new car. It makes my head spin. I would like to believe that there is hope but it honestly feels like a losing battle. I know that in other European countries the environment is taken a little more seriously. Is this an education thing or is there something more to it?

    State Houses Thread

Since we have a dedicated thread for news about the various State Senates, I thought I'd get one going about the various State Houses of Representatives I'll start with someone from Iowa who's gone to the Steve King school of political discourse; kcrg.com/content/news/Iowa-GOP-legislator-taking-heat-for-comments-about-gay-men-417135443.html Rep Watts, Fornicate you.

  13. I thought I'd start a thread to talk about the last (to date) legitimate President of the United States. No it's not Fuck Face von Grand Wizard. It's President Barack Obama. He had this to say about the Parkland anniversary today; I have no interest in what aforementioned Fuck Face has to say about the anniversary cause it's probably just a bunch of horseshit.
  14. The Miami Herald has just published this unbelievable investigative story on how Jeffrey Epstein avoided serious prison time for running a large, multi-national sex ring that preyed on underage teenage girls. The original case, back in the mid-2000s, is the one that also involved Prince Andrew and Alan Dershowitz -- and yes, because it's Florida, Mar-A-Lago is mentioned. [Trigger warning for descriptions of abuse in article & related videos] Much, much more at the Miami Herald link.
  15. https://www.cnn.com/2019/06/27/us/alabama-pregnant-woman-shot-in-stomach-manslaughter-indictment-trnd/index.html This is horrifying. And I'm seriously afraid that it's only the beginning. My take is that she may have instigated the fight or prolonged it, but I don't think that she wanted to lose her child. I see this as the beginning of our rights being stripped away. I think that it was only a matter of time until a woman was charged, it would not matter what the circumstances were. I think the powers that be have been waiting and this situation is what they will use.
  16. We have a Spicer thread, but as we're seeing more and more of his replacement, SHS, I've started a separate thread for her. Although, with this latest tweet of hers I'm not sure this thread is going to be a long one, as none of us will know what she's saying if this is a prediction of future communications. covfefe, anyone?

    Wikileaks

I'm starting this new topic because Wikileaks has just released thousands of CIA documents, and is promising more. As it concerns the US Intelligence community, I thought it would be appropriate to discuss it here. Here are two articles about it: http://www.bbc.com/news/technology-39193008?ocid=socialflow_twitter and http://www.news.com.au/technology/online/wikileaks-releases-thousands-of-cia-documents-showing-hacking-capacity-and-how-phones-are-being-targeted/news-story/15b2a399e2a7f65b89acc3b08d9707e9
  18. I am out of pithy things to say, so, just, ONWARD. Continued from here:
