  1. I know Jim Bob has said in the past that they want all the kids to stay close by even after they marry. Do you think it's so they can keep them more isolated and restrict access and exposure to normal life and normal people. It seems like Josh and Anna have had more exposure to *normals* since they moved. I wonder if Jim-Bob and Michelle are worried that such exposure will lead to them questioning the belief system and/or wanting to do things differently. I wonder how they would react if one of the kids married, moved away and decided to let their kids go to a secular school, or maybe one of the girls decides to go to university as a mature student and get a degree. Do you think they'd be shunned? Seems like JB likes to have all the control and wanting them close by means he can wield control...plus Michelle can drop off her little ones.
  2. Radar Online recently posted an open letter to the Duggars written by Megan Lind, a former ATI follower and victim of Gothard's abuse: http://radaronline.com/exclusives/2014/ ... arassment/ In the letter she details her experience of being brought up in the same way that the Duggars are raising their girls, and says how she was actually punished when she tried to go to the Leadership of ATI to express her discomfort with his inappropriate ways of touching her. She says that ATI and the way the Duggars raise their children, especially the girls, to be completely obedient to adults and not question, sets them up to become victims of such abuse rather than providing the protection that the Duggars think they are giving their daughters. I agree with her. These kids have not been taught how to say no, even if uncomfortable. They have been taught, instead, to be obedient ...even joyfully so (even if they aren't joyful inside...then they are taught that is their fault). If one of these marriages turned out to be domestically violent, would these girls be able to stand up to their husbands, or get help for themselves? Would they be able to leave after they've been told that this this man is now essentially in charge and they have to be obedient to him and allow him to make all the decisions? And the boys too? Would they come forward if they were the victims of sexual molestation at one of their ATI camps? Or would they be ashamed and feel as if it was somehow their fault? Do you think the Duggars heard about/read this open letter?

New Cover Photo on 19 kids Facebook

https://www.facebook.com/19KidsandCounting Ben is in it.. they wouldn't have done that unless there was an engagement being announced, right? Derick and Anna were never really in anything until they were at least engaged. Anyone have any thoughts?
  4. As an English major (well, to become one in three weeks) I probably judge people too much by their reading habits. I was rather horrified watching the episode where J'chelle and Jill went to a school to talk about reading and the only book Jill could think of to mention to the kids was Sarah Maxwell's courtship book. Others can worry about the lack of science education in SOTDRT, but I am most disturbed by the lack of literature. (Interestingly, lots of SAHDS are into classics and write their own novels, but none of the Duggar girls are allowed that individuality.) Full disclosure: growing up conservative SDA my biggest act of rebellion was reading Shakespeare. So, here's an old Barnes and Noble piece in which J'chelle claims they read a lot. (Almost typed "breed a lot"). But there's a conspicuous lack of works for the older "children" that would be anything but instruction on how to live a perfect fundie life -- nothing that could introduce ambiguity or require interpretation. Per the course with them, I know, but still makes me mad. http://bookclubs.barnesandnoble.com/t5/ ... a-p/364748
  5. https://m.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=4513598375368&id=1752950116&set=o.174015830520&source=46. Sorry if this has been discussed before, but I came across this very old pic on the public FB page, and they seem to have gained a daughter in the bunch. On the right I can see Jana and Jill, in the middle I believe is Joy hidden behind a howler, then Jessa and Jinger on the left but there is one extra girl between them! Anyone have a clue who this bonus Duggar is?!
  6. Some humpers claim if things were that bad in the Duggar house, that surely someone would have done something. They have a grandmother, aunt, and cousin. Though I absolutely disagree with their beliefs and lifestyle, I want to think it myself. However, the stories on recoveringgrace and other sites of former Quiverfull/Fundie kids make you think differently. More than one story said no one had clue what went on even when someone visited them or stayed overnight. Then, some of the family members may be afraid to get involved. Maybe Grandma D and Deanna just don't want to ruffle Boob.
  7. Although Amy doesn't seem to be on as much as she used to, for a while they seemed to take her along on trips and stuff and I wondered how they reconciled her wearing pants and listening to music on her Ipod and other stuff that they don't allow their daughters to do? I mean, do they tell their girls that Amy is going to Hell? Or that she dresses like a slut? I mean, is music is so evil and leads to immoral behaviour...are they saying that will happen to Amy? It's weird that none of the older girls seem to question that. Does anyone know more about how they deal with her and their belief systems clearly clashing?
  8. This is sorta a spinoff of roddma's 'how influential are the Duggars' topic. I am a believer that whatever you watch influences you, whether it is CSI, Cutthroat Kitchen, or the Duggars. I also believe that the more you watch something, the more you become tolerant to it (NOT that you'll necessarily do it!), whether it is doing drugs or not kissing until marriage. I'll go first: the Duggars influenced me by making me consider having a large family. Not because I think the Duggars are so great, but because I had been raised around people with 2 - 4 kids, and it just never even occurred to me to have more.
  9. I don't think the Duggars influence anyone to toss birth control much, but it seems some fans are influenced by other aspects. Recent comments on are 19 Kids FB from a poster who is giving the Growing Up Duggar book to their granddaughter or a parent saying their kids are saving their first kiss for marriage. There are frequent comments from fans who say the show made them better parents or they wish they had raised their kids this way, etc. Sometimes, I chime in and you can't go by what you see on TV. I imagine in a few years the Duggars will be a blip on the radar and the promises to save first kisses or court will be nil.

    Duggars and Rebellion

Hey guys! Long time lurker, first time poster! I was wondering which Duggar you think is going to rebel. With 19 of them, it's only a matter of time before one of the kids wears pants, attends an accredited college, or decides to *gasp* date. Honestly my money is mainly on the girls, just because if you are a male in fundieland, your life doesn't seem to be half bad. I figure that Jinger, Joy or the lost girls are probably our best bets, though I do hope that Jessa and Jana will surprise us.
  11. I was thinking about this the other day and felt it might be a nice topic. The Duggars eat, sleep and breath religion. I am still reading the Growing Up Duggar book (sadly it isn't so interesting I want to read it every second of the day lol). I just got to the Chapter about Culture and how the Duggars deal with stuff like internet and TV. Anyway, Do the Duggars ever get sick of being a Duggar? I mean it is the same thing pretty much everyday. Hearing Proverb of the day and pretty much being told you need to follow Gothard. I don't know I just wonder if any of the kids question or if they are so sheltered they just follow the normal pattern of life.
  12. I've noticed that, as soon as anyone here speculates on the Duggars, or anybody in their show, being other than "normal", other posters rush in to deny the possibility of what's being suggested. Let's face facts. With that many people on the show, some of them ARE gay. It's simple statistics. So what? On the same basis, a couple of them will have an IQ that is below the normal level. One of the benefits of fundie-land for those people is that it is very inclusive of anyone with a learning disability. They are never going to rock the boat, are they? Eating disorders are rife in society, especially among young women who are in the media. Michelle has made a thing of dieting - she's been to Weight Watchers. The older girls, who as part of the "chosen" family are also role-models for other young women of course have clearly all lost weight in the last few years. There's a massive contradict here - on the one hand, a young woman has no business being self-critical because God made her the way she is. On the other, she has to be thin and beautiful to attract a mate. Cognitive dissonance, anyone? On the basis of all this, it seems to me more likely than not that at least one of the older Duggar girls has developed an eating disorder. Indeed I would be surprised if it were not the case, given these pressures. Do the deniers here have some kind of unconscious desire for the Duggar image to be true after all? There really is an Easter Bunny, Santa really brings the little children all those presents - and the Duggars really are as perfect as their show makes them seem?
  13. I wish I could add that line to every argument the Duggars have for why they are so much better than everyone and for all their fans that support them. "We travel more than most kids our age"... Because we have a tv show "The duggars have NO debt!"... Because they have a tv show Even the duggars don't seem to realize it's not their lifestyle or how much god loves them more then everyone else... It's because they make money selling their kids childhoods.
  14. Forgive me if there is another thread on this, but does any one know what prompted the speculation on the duggar daughters dislike of Anna? They put on quite the show for the cameras if this is the case. I'm so very curious.
  15. So I watched an old episode where the Duggs answer viewer questions and Jill & Jing were asked the age-old question of why don't the Duggs dance. Jill answered by saying that it stirs up desires that cannot be righteously fulfilled (strangely she never utters the word defrauding). My question is, if that's the reason, why can't married couples dance in the privacy of their homes? In that case those desires would be righteously fulfilled. Plus, it has the added bonus of proving that unless it's a bump-and-grind, it likely won't lead to lust.

    Duggar Fam Instagram

So I follow (like a good fundie snarker) all the Duggars & some of their fellow fellowshippers on Instagram. They recently posted a video of the kids swimming. All fun & lot of coverings. And it looks like at least the little girls got out of wearing those god awful modest wear swim suits. But it looks like all the girls, even Johannah, have on those wet suits with built in floatations devices. I know I'll get some disagreeers here, but aren't they (at least Jordyn on up) way too old to need those? I understand they might not have as many swimming opportunities bc of their skin-aphobia issues. But that's a safety issue to me for my kids to not know how to swim.

    Duggars and Mental Health

How do you think the Duggars deal with mental health concerns within their family? Surely they understand that prayer can only do so much and that some of their kids might need someone to talk to who could provide another perspective. I know there are a few theories around regarding when Michelle seemed to have some sort of mental breakdown and whether of not she's on medication. If that's the case, then maybe a few of the older kids are on medication as well. I know I'd probably need something to deal with all the damn noise and general fuckery, but maybe it's different if you grow up with it/are indoctrinated into believing that this is how things should be for everyone.
  19. Mrs.Right

I was watching over the 14 Children and Pregnant Again special and was disturbed by what Jana's jurisdiction are at age 14 is. She freaking is cleaning her parents room? What the crap! I would never allow or make my children clean my bedroom. GROSS!!!! Here's a link:
  20. All Duggar humpers say it's wonderful the Duggar daughters help and they should help since they are part of the family. To top it off, they say the older daughters want to do it and it creates sibling bonds. These young women do more than help. It has already been mentioned elsewhere on the forum Jordyn and Josie sleep with Jana and one other older daughter. That isn't just helping. If they are part of the family, what about sons and husbands? I have read comments on other forums on this same subject. Most of them aren't' even Fundie and put way too much on their older kids. It makes me wonder where the fathers are. Then younger kids can do some things for themselves as they get older. Changing an occasional diaper isn't the same as being constant caretaker. I could see if it became necessary like for sick parents etc, but not full time. I guess some of them do enjoy it , but many more likely don't. The parents are the ones who had the kids. I'm not against helping, but in this case, the rigid gender roles can make slaves out of females in Patriarchy.

    Do the Duggers keep pets?

Because here it says that they ban both pets and TV (2011). But they later adopted, or rather took in, a cat and some kittens the following year. Apparently, the Duggars "don't have a good track record with pets" and many of them "disappear" or "don't make it". Does anyone know about the status on these poor cats? Free the Dugcats.
  22. Forgive me if this has been posted elsewhere, but I found it interesting. The Daily Mail is usually known for its large number of leghumpers...not this time. Take a look at the comments section. In the past they have been filled with nothing but praise, but now the tide seems to be turning. Lots of comments from people that grew up in large families and hated it. dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-2624505/Breakfast-lunch-dinner-5-Michelle-Duggar-reveals-strict-grocery-budget-sticks-20-person-household.html
  23. Thought this was interesting since it shows images from ATI booklets of some things Gothard believes about birth control. http://redemptionpictures.com/2014/07/0 ... l-gothard/
  24. Based on a comment someone made in another topic (the poster wondered if Jill had found FJ already), I was wondering what happens if a Duggar kid gets confronted with the real world or an internet access without parental monitoring. The Duggars say themselves, that they strictly "monitor" their childrens access to the internet. Which probably basically means that they blacklist everything that isn't ATI approved. Including ebil science pages about evolution and stuff. So now that Jill actually (hopefully) has unblocked access to the internet, what do you think happens? Will she actually go on sites that were a no-go in the Duggar compound? And no, I'm not talking about stuff like porn, but sites like this forum, or maybe a secular newspaper, or even only wikipedia. And do you think that she might read some things that will make her question her worldview? Or has she been brainwashed enough to believe that only Gothard and the ATI know the truth about life and God and everybody else is just lying?
  25. We recently had a baby shower at my church for a gay couple who adopted a beautiful baby girl. They already fostered/adopted a ton of kids and it got me thinking about fundie families. If the Duggars were Black, Hispanic, Muslim, Homosexuals, Atheists, Poor & on welfare, etc. Would people accept them? I see a ton of comments from the Duggars fans not to judge them because they're a godly christian family with values but if the tables were turned I bet they would comment how they need to keep their legs closed and how they need to stop having kids. Or typical black/Hispanic family having kids needs to stop using our resources or how a gay couple are confusing their children and shouldn't adopt. I just hate the double standards. Btw would love to see a show about this. Maybe tlc could choose a family that actually wants and really loves their kids( not saying that the Duggars don't) but a couple who makes each child feel special and needed. Not hauled off to their sister mom. I would love to see a gay couple on tlc.
