    Duggar/Fundie health?

Today I was binging on Netflix, and I got into the autism documentaries. As I was watching them, I thought to myself "man the Duggars really are blessed, 19 kids and all of them healthy". Then I thought of other well known fundie families, like the Kellers and the Bates. Even the Wallers, I know they had a son pass away in adulthood from cancer, but all of their kids are healthy. I just find it astonishing that they have all of these children and all of them in robust health in comparison to so many of us with loved ones with various childhood illnesses. Are there any fundie kids with Autism, Downs, Type 1 diabetes, Cystic Fibrosis etc? From my outsiders point of view, fundies go through alot less anguish than us normal folk, a lot less faith trying times. They may be on to something...*slips on special edition cheerleader J'chelle frumper*
  2. Addicting Info had an article about how religious conservatives jumped into action to defend the Duggars after a petition to cancel the show gained traction (after the whole *kissing* debacle where they removed gay couples who sent in pictures kissing). Unfortunately (for them), their attempts to defend the Duggars has backfired in a big way and drawn a lot more negative attention than they anticipated! "So the religious right jumped on the bandwagon. The American Family Association posted their own viciously anti-gay petition, as did other swindlers and exploiters on the right. "The religious right website Lifesite News also posted a petition, which quickly got over 140,000 signatures. Lifesite also began a #DefendtheDuggars social media campaign on Twitter, hoping to draw attention to the story. LifeSiteNews.com's managing editor John Jalsevac also created a #DefendtheDuggars Tweetfest! on Facebook, complete with "sample tweets," like: - I stand with the Duggars against liberal bullies! #DefendtheDuggars http://bit.ly/1yZW6Xz - I support traditional marriage, and I support the Duggars! #DefendtheDuggars http://bit.ly/1yZW6Xz Meanwhile, their hashtag, #DefendTheDuggars, was quickly co-opted by some of Twitter's best LGBT activists. At the core of the issue is not whether or not the Duggars should have their TV show, which reportedly has netted them millions of dollars. At the core of the issue is that TLC and the show's producers aren't being honest with the Duggar family's practices and beliefs. Also at issue is the outrageous hypocrisy that conservatives are claiming liberals have no right to boycott or petition a company about their beliefs, but conservatives claim they do. So Twitter made sure that those lapses in transparency are being corrected. Take a look, and feel free to join in at #DefendTheDuggars. Mrs. Betty Bowers @BettyBowers Boycott a pro-gay brand? Freedom! Boycott an anti-gay brand? Bullying! Persecution! This Gothard Fella

So, totally curious here, how do you guys know so much about this Gothard fella that the Duggars follow? I am fairly new here and have never heard of him before now. I live in a pretty liberal part of CA, so most of the churches are super laid back. I've never heard of a Pastor (or whatever he is) have so many rules for his followers. So for example, how do some of you know that he prefers young women's hair to be long and wavy? Not straight, or curly, but wavy. Did he put out a book of rules or something? Have the Duggars admitted to following this guy? Do all people who attend these conferences like ATI follow Gothard?

    Duggar hair question

I went to a Mennonite wedding and reception a few years ago, very rare where I live, and the majority of the women there followed a strict rule of wearing their a certain way. I believe married women and the bride wore their hair up and covered and the unmarried women all wore their long hair down. Now with all the rules the Duggars follow does anyone know why they don't follow biblical rules about hair? I realize they aren't Mennonite but I consider them to be on a similar conservative scale. I could be wrong, I am new to the Duggars. Does JB and M just pick the rules they want to follow?
  5. Just saw this story: http://extratv.com/2014/11/17/19-kids-a ... -backlash/ Seems the kissing photos stirred up some backlash from the LGBTQ community.

    Sterilization

So, if pregnancy puts the mother's life in grave danger, how do fundies handle that? And sometimes that danger can affect the life of the fetus as well. How do they view it if a couple is told that another pregnancy will not end well, would they still believe that they should continue to keep trying? I'm talking about a young woman who is fertile - not women like Michele who are older and past their fertile life.
  7. Now that Derick is starting to expand Jill's mind and experience by doing things like taking her to a Broadway show (of Cinderella no less) and a wine tasting and, I'm sure, other interesting things, as well as probably talking to her about his own childhood and teen years, as well as university and what that was like, do you think Jill is suddenly realizing that maybe she missed out on a lot? I think at first Jill will remain firmly loyal to her parents and the way she was raised, but after a while of being married to Derick and having some new (previously forbidden or highly unlikely to happen) experiences, you have to wonder if she'll start thinking about all the things he had fun doing over the years that she never even had the chance to experience even once. No trick or treating, no thinking about college - what to take/where to go? No movies or music and dancing and having fun out with friends. I'm sure Derick will want his kids to experience things that he enjoyed and Derick seems to have a more normal childhood. He may be very religious, but he didn't go to a Christian college and he seems to enjoy different things (like the foods he chose for their picnic before they got married were not foods that Jill would have tried before). The Duggars don't celebrate Christmas with presents do they? Somehow I suspect Derick's family does, and probably most of his friends do as well. I'm sure he will want his son to grow up and enjoy the same things he did when he was growing up from Christmas to going to college, and maybe try out for Pistol Pete to keep the tradition going. One of his friends already got them a baby onesie with Derick's college logo on it I think. Even if Jill stays firm that her parents are completely right about everything for a while, it's hard to believe she won't start wondering if maybe they didn't have the greatest upbringing once she starts seeing other people and hearing about their childhoods and seeing that they aren't horrible people if they celebrated Halloween or kissed and held hands before marriage. Every time she does something that she knows her parents wouldn't approve of and has fun, I wonder if there's some cognitive dissonance going on there in her head. For once in her life questions might actually arise and lo and behold, the sky didn't fall just because she had a glass of wine or whatever.
  8. For those of you that missed the episodes of the Duggars TLC is stating tomorrow afternoon with 14 Children and Pregnant Again. Tomorrow morning they finish the rotation and go back to the beginning. Frumpers and all
  9. rawstory.com/rs/2014/09/656002 The article talks about a fundamentalist Christian woman who left her abusive husband, and provides a good overview of the Quiverfull lifestyle for people who aren't obsessed about it (like many of us) She's the creator of No Longer Quivering, which I understand some people on here are not fans of... but I still think this is a good article "At the women’s shelter, I was given a form to complete … I wrote three pages describing the situation in our home, and after reading what I had written, the crisis volunteer said to me, “The judge will not grant you a protection order unless you actually accuse your husband of abuse.†I told her that I didn’t really think my husband was “technically†abusive, and in fact, I had no doubt that he truly loved me and the kids. He always put us first … he basically centered his entire life around us! We were a good Christian family. ...In 2003, we were named “Nebraska Family of the Year†by the Nebraska Family Council"

    College of the Ozarks

So the Duggars took a tour of this campus over the last few days. I don't know a lot of about this particular college. It seems like tuition is "free" if the students work on campus and they encourage "no debt" like the Duggars love to preach. Do you think the Duggars would ever let any of their sons go here? (We all know daughters are out of the question)

    TLC editing reruns?

I caught a re-run of Jill & Derick's wedding last weekend, and noticed that 2 "controversial" scenes had been cut out: the part where Jill says that Derick's mom "might not make it at all", as well as the moment where she licked wedding cake directly off Derick's finger. Does TLC have a habit of listening to viewer feedback and then editing the episodes before they go to reruns? Those 2 scenes got a lot of people talking, and then they were mysteriously gone when the episode aired again. If so, I think that's ridiculous! This family signed up to be on tv, you can't start editing out their strange moments!
  14. John David seems desperate as hell and i'd love to be able to see behind the scenes of this family if only I was fundie would you marry into the Duggar family?
  15. So we know that Jana was on the Josh and Anna road trip but she wasn't on screen or mentioned. And we know that Josiah was missing from the whole last season. I was just watching the rerun of when the Duggar and Bates older girls go camping and Jill is missing. I don't think they mentioned why - maybe midwife duties? With so many kids I think it would be easy to air episodes when a kid or two is missing. Any other missing Duggar episodes?
  16. the duggers get more then they ask for. http://www.thenewcivilrightsmovement.co ... ppens_next Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar, the parents starring in "19 Kids And Counting," posted a photo to Facebook of themselves kissing and asked other couples to do the same. Some same-sex couples obliged. Guess what happened next?
  17. The DUggars have a whole section in a "Love that Mulipliess' dealing with shyness. I can see encouraging children to look at people who you talk to, but some of us are naturally shy or may have a disorder.
  18. Share the episodes that you think is most cringe-worthy of them all! (IMO the absolute #1 cringe episode has to be the whole Jubilee deal, I mean, who the hell actually wants to watch an entire episode about their dead baby and it's funeral ? shouldn't that of been handled more privately? )
  19. How long do y'all think it will be until the Duggars announce another courtship? Before Jessa's inevitable pregnancy announcement? Or will they just try to maintain the ratings with pregnancy and yet to be aired wedding stuff? I already feel something of a loss, I need potential mates to speculate over!
  20. There was an article on Starcasm this morning with a lot of quotes from the Duggars regarding the kissing pics and courtship and who would be possibly courting next. It was the quote about Jana that I found most interesting and I wonder if it's damage control because of all the articles on the internet lately about Jana and her slaveship: "Jim Bob said John David’s twin sister Jana Duggar also has a lot of suitors, but the oldest Duggar daughter hasn’t felt like any of the men have been right for her. “Jana is one of the prettiest girls in the world and one of the sweetest girls,†Jim Bob said. “I have gone to hear about each one, and so far she hasn’t felt that is the way the Lord is leading.†Jana added that she’s “enjoying watching her siblings fall in love and get married†and is content to help keep the Duggar house running smoothly. “I just think for me I am just waiting and we’ll see,†Jana said. “When God brings that one along it will be his timing.â€" http://starcasm.net/archives/295920 I thought the remark about how Jana "is content to help keep the Duggar house running smoothly" as well as her saying how much she's "enjoying watching her siblings fall in love and get married" was said to counteract people saying that Jana looks unhappy, is being used (ie: bridesmaids dress alterations and ties), and gets too much piled on her via Michelle and Jim Bob. I think they have read or heard the comments and this is their way to fight back...especially getting Jana to say this in her "own words" by which I mean saying whatever Jim Bob told her to say. The article also mentions John David (who says he is not courting yet), Jinger and Joseph and how they want to court in the same exact say as Jill and Jessa. Plus a Bates/Duggar music video of a Christian song (not sure who is singing, but he has a good voice) and the Duggars have a new YouTube channel, Duggar Studios which premiered the song. You can watch the video at the Starcasm link above.
  21. What are peoples' general thoughts on TLC's political or even religious leanings? I have been feeling pretty weird about it lately. Back when the Duggar circus started, they used to really poke fun at them, almost to the point that it made me feel bad for the Duggars, like they were being exploited. (How things have changed...Jim Bob does the exploiting all on his own now!) Josh and Anna's wedding was practically filmed as one giant joke - tuba sounds and montages of hand sex, "special" things and long eye gazes. The show NEVER does anything to make them look silly or over the top now. I mean, it's really the total opposite - they bend over backwards to make them look more socially "acceptable" and normal. I can't remember exactly when, but a few weeks ago I was watching one of the late night reruns and they were airing anti-choice commercials. It was a woman in tears talking about how she got an abortion and then later on couldn't get pregnant and how much she regretted her abortion. That was the first thing I saw that really started making me feel just ick. Then lately it seems like we are getting nonstop shows about very conservative, purity-touting Christians. I can't really tell if TLC is trying to focus on a variety of lifestyles and stories anymore or if they are seriously just going all out for the evangelical audience. This virgin camp show, that slightly-more-progressive-but-not-really family starting the new church in Alabama, the singing bus family...it's getting to be a bit much, and that's coming from me, who clearly has an unhealthy fascination with the fundies of my past LOL.
  22. 1. Jessa's removal of the post wedding hickey photo. 2. The creeptastic photo of the parents reenacting Blessa's fundie porn kiss. Ewwww. 3. All those Bible verses that essentially say haters gonna hate hate hate. What's your proof? No doubt at all they read this - we should use this to school the older unmarrieds on how to successfully escape the emotional abuse of fundie crazy town.
  23. I honestly would love to understand reality TV. I love scripted shows and understand how those are filmed, however I struggle with how they film reality TV. How do they film the Duggars? Are there retakes, some seems scripted when they talk. Etc. Can someone explain it. I truly don't know how it works. I realize what I watch is fake, but how much is?
  24. I had a dream I met the Duggars! Some of them anyway. I was at a big dinner party and I was sitting across from Josh/Anna and David/Priscilla. They were the only fundies there. Josh was actually really nice and pleasant to talk to. I was shocked! David and Priscilla were pretty silent the whole time. I kept wanting to hear him talk with someone so I could see what he was like in real life. I was thinking the whole time how I couldn't WAIT to get to FJ and tell people about how I met the Duggars and that people wouldn't believe how well Josh came across in real conversation. I think this dream came about because yesterday, I noticed something that reminded me there are very few degrees of separation between myself and John Shrader.
