    The Bible Slide

Here is the "Christian" version of the Cha Cha slide. It's so bad it's funny.
  2. Just stumbled across this great article about original versions of the Bible and how modern translations have changed the original wording to show the Bible forbidding homosexuality. The original translations from the Greek forbid men lying with boys (pederasty). Has “Homosexual” always been in the Bible? Here's the wiki on the KJV: King James Only movement American Baptists/evangelicals who believe that the KJV is divinely inspired is only one aspect of the King James Only movement.

Make Reading God’s Word Your #1 Priority

.... because you don’t know when tragedy will strike. Reader story. She describes her morning, which includes running 5k on a treadmill every day at 6am... after half an hour reading the Bible, of course. One day she did all this as normal... and the following evening she and her husband were in an ambulance, as he’d suffered bleeding on the brain. Doesn’t mention what caused it. Basically, READ YOUR BIBLE. That’s the most important thing. Not “spend as much time as you can with your family”, make sure you read your Bible everyday. *eyeroll*
  5. The Museum of the Bible in Washington D.C. is set to have its grand opening on Saturday. No surprise, the museum is hosting a black tie gala at the Trump hotel tonight. The museum is reportedly free which may encourage many of our favorite fundies to make the pilgrimage. I actually received a flyer for the museum in the mail -- seeing how DC voted in the last election, I don't think we are their target audience! https://www.museumofthebible.org/
  6. I just saw this story on the BBC news site. I think I would have evacuated too if some creepy guy started reading the bible and talking about death. There's been so many terrorist attacks in Britain this year, no wonder the passengers weren't taking any chances. Luckily no one was hurt. http://www.bbc.com/news/uk-england-london-41466140

    Bible Fact of the Day

I thought this was amusing and just wanted to share. Happy Thursday FJers.
  9. So I fell down a rabbit hole yesterday and discovered a family on You Tube who have 8 kids (all still at home), dress in matching colors, homeschool, and...wait for it...pipe audio Bible into every room of their home 24/7. They say it takes about 3 days to run through the entire Bible and then it just starts back up again in a continuous loop. Dad runs a computer shop out of the basement of the home and has it running there, too. I don't think the kids ever escape it. My question is...how wasn't this a Steve Maxwell idea??? If you're curious, do a search on You Tube for Andrea M
  10. Over on the Duggars by the Dozenty thread, @EmCatlyn mentioned this as a possibility of where Josh and Anna may be receiving their "professional counseling." Since we don't really know where they're going, I decided to give it its own thread here,(Mods, feel free to move it if there's a more appropriate place.) Holy rabbit hole, Batman! Did you know that: Teenagers are an invention of the rock 'n' roll culture? Don't play organized sports, because you might have to practice/play on Sunday or Wednesday nights, when you're supposed to be in church.(Interestingly, the author
  11. Conservative Christians often throw around 'let he who is without sin cast the first stone' and' judge not' I don't think they know what the verses mean. Jesus said 'casting stones' to save a woman from stoning. The Pharisees were supposed to bring the man for stoning, and they were only going to punish the woman. "Judge not' is refering ot superficial judgment. None of these verses are implying we should be sinless before calling out others for wrong doing. Here's a good explanation of 'judge not' http://www.gotquestions.org/do-not-judge.html
  12. Some good news out of Tennessee today... washingtonpost.com/news/post-nation/wp/2016/04/14/tennessee-governor-vetoes-bill-making-bible-the-official-state-book/?tid=sm_fb Kudos to Gov. Haslam for having the courage to do this. But yeah when your reich wing base finds out about this...
  13. Wade Burleson, I love you so hard....in a totally appropriate, agape way, of course. Many (most?) fundie churches take Paul's admonishment for women to be totally silent in church at face value. Wade Burleson unpacks the original Greek for us to show that Paul was actually dissing the Old Covenant Hebrew practices: By reading this article, you'll learn more about the Greek symbol eta used to indicate "Pffffft!" and what Paul actually meant. This is one of those linchpin passages in patriarchy, used to keep women in submission to headship, saying in essence, "Looky here, God say
  14. I was just watching this video where Penn Jillette mentions that ACTUALLY READING the Bible in its full context is a big part of why he is now an atheist: This is not the first time that I have heard an atheist say this. I know a lot of former Jehovah's Witnesses who say that part of how they ended up rejecting the religion was by actually just sitting down and READING the Bible in its actual context, instead of just looking at the carefully hand-picked, often out of context quoting of the Bible that Watchtower magazines use (nowadays they encourage people to use an online app to look at t

The Bible Said What? New Book

http://www.amazon.com/Bible-Said-What-T ... +said+what I ordered this gem after a friend of mine got one. The Amazon summary reads: The prologue reads: Its a short book, with pretty "deep" illustrations that go to the heart of the cherry picked passages. They focus on fun topics like rape, killing children for disobeying elders, misogyny, using wild animals to kill your enemies, various things that facebook wouldnt ban that would get you executed in biblical time... very cute. Its not a deep theological text but definitely makes it

    Phantom Bible Verses

How many 'phantom' verses can you think of that are not real Bible verses but quotes or misinterpreted verses? "God helps them who helps themselves' was said by Ben Franklin. They sound Biblical,. but they are not.

MJB's handydandy Bible study: Titus 2

As it happens, I've heard a couple of Lutheran pastors discussing the 2nd chapter of the book of Titus. Guess what? There's more to it than the admonition for old ladies to encourage young ladies to be submissive! In fact, there are admonitions to the menfolk! Yes! Who *would* have known? Just for fun, here's a little partitioning out of the subjects. I've taken out the verse numbers for ease of reading. Anybody who's interested in counting up the number of verses toward women vs. those toward men can find the original here And just so I don't lose those of us who aren'

    FJ Bible Study: Ephesians 5:21

I was inspired to start that FJ Bible Study that we talked about in another thread a while back. The first entry is up on the blog here: http://www.freejinger.org/blog/2014/10/ ... sians-521/ Updated link:

The Holy Bible, Mark Driscoll Version

Some of you may have already seen this (in fact, from the fabulous snark, it's likely someone on FJ has contributed at some point) but it's good enough to share again. I present the Bible, translated into "proper, manly form": http://bible-mdv.tumblr.com/ (Not breaking the link because I figure the blog owner would love us. Also, I'd love to see more contributions if any of you brilliant FJers can come up with some.)

    DC Bible Museum

Steve Green (president of Hobby Lobby) is planning to build a huge bible museum two blocks away from the mall that will open in 2017 (Smuggar is probably very excited). It will “bring to life the living word of God ... to inspire confidence in the absolute authorityâ€. He also "wanted to hand out Bible tracts to visitors, who would exit the museum singing 'Amazing Grace' ". However, he claims people of all faiths are welcome and he wants to take a scholarly approach to the Bible. I don't really know how he can combine those two things. This sounds like a very bad mix of religion and educatio

    Taking the Bible too seriously

I saw this article on the Huffington Post and immediately throught of FJ. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/pete-enns ... lp00000592 Link not broken because it's a public news/blog site.
  23. You will have to click the link but it is pretty interesting and maybe makes more since on why humans suffer. \http://www.huffingtonpost.com/dr-joel-hoffman/three-answers-to-good-and_b_5748286.html Scripture once offered five answers to good and evil, but only two of them made it into the Bible as we now know it. The other three were cut as an accidental side-effect of bookmaking technology. Fortunately, history has not completely erased these ancient jewels, which survive to complement the Bible’s answer to the most timeless of questions, Why is my life like this?
  24. Ok, some how a close friend who has an insanely fundie past*, has decided to slip a bit back into the Bible and decided to suddenly try to lead me to bible study with her. I told her politely no, then had to be more firm about some small ways I don't follow or believe in the bible. Any way, I obviously didn't do it right as she is insisting that the Bible never condones rape, or creates rules for what I called "acceptable rape". So I thought I would first ask about where I can find these Scriptures, but that got me to thinking, what other Scriptures have you all come across that also had you s
