Questions about how to use FJ

Questions

How do I always go to the first unread post in a thread?

Picture thingy at the top (settings) > Account Settings > Content View Behavior, then click Take me to comments I haven't read. You can also always go to the beginning of a thread, or to the most recent post.

Where is the member list?

The way to find members has been streamlined with the new search function.  To find a member go to the search field > select "members" from the drop down to narrow your search to members only > type in all or part of their username.  It will pull up any user with those search terms in their name, so even partial search terms will be effective.

Where are the emoticons and how do I find the one I need?

·       In post text fields click on emoticon icon in the tool bar

·       Scroll down to see a sampling of emoticons in each category or click on Categories drop down for a list of the categories number of emoticons they contain.

·       To search for a specific emoticon you can use the search field and it will pull up all emoticons with your search terms in its name field.  (i.e. angry, ferret, leghumper, etc.)

Emoticons I’ve Used Recently in Overview contains…emoticons you’ve recently used.  It’s pretty intuitive.

I'm signed in but I can't view any forums?  What do I do now?

If you are signed in and can't see any of the forums there is a problem with your account.  PM @Curious, @Destiny,  or @HerNameIsBuffy to resolve the situation.

How do I ignore / stop ignoring a user?

Go to your account in the upper right hand of the site header and select "Ignored Users" from the drop down menu.  You can also add new users to ignore as well as stop ignoring users from your list in this screen.

I'm signed in but I can't view any forums?  What do I do now?

How do I snip quotes and remove the quote boxes?

"Snipping" is just highlighting the part you want to quote and then clicking the "quote" message that comes up.   This will place it in a new post.

Removing quote boxes:  backspace or select and delete.

How do I PM people?

There are several ways to send another member a PM:

* Messages > Compose New > start typing their username in the To field and it will auto fill> select

* Mouseover their Avatar > Send Message

* Their Profile > Message

How do I link directly to a specific post within FJ?

In the upper right hand corner of each post is a menu which looks like an ellipsis.  Click this and you will see Report, Share, Edit.  Click Share and copy/paste the link.

Where can I read these rules of which you speak?

Until we can update the format of the rules, ToU, etc. here's a handy list of links.  With this list and ctrl F anyone can find the info they seek.

Can I be logged onto FJ through multiple devices at once?

You sure can - as many devices as you like.

Why did my two posts get merged?

In order to keep things tidy and avoid double posting this function combines your posts when you post consecutively on the same thread.

I am not able to give reputation to other members, why?

Every so often a user who is not on restricted status will experience this.  PM one of the mods or email helpme@freejinger.org and someone will take care of you.

Why is there a category of emoticons labeled "Old - Do Not Use"?  Can we use them?

Despite the name, yes, you are free to use these.  These are from the old site and must be kept together to avoid breaking old posts...so do not use really means:  "Do not use unless you prefer searching through junk drawers and unorganized piles for things over opening a neatly organized closet and finding what you need in it's proper place."

What is a warning?  What do the points showing on my profile mean?

When a member violates a rule or ToU they may get a warning from mod or admin in a red box at the top of the page being viewed.  The number of points issued is at the discretion of the mod or admin issuing the warning.

The warning will contain details of the violation and you must click to acknowledge receipt of the warning before you will be able to post, comment, create content, etc.

In the right sidebar of your profile it will show your current total of warning points with a link to recent warnings.  This information is visible to mods and admins only.  Other members who are not mods or admins will not see any reference to your warnings.

If if you disagree with the warning which has been issued you can PM a admin to discuss it.

Warning points drop off automatically after 12 months.

What are moods?  How do I change mine?

For the existential answer I'd suggest you start a thread to discuss it.

But for the mood icons here on FJ which is a cute way to let everyone know how you're feeling:  go to your account drop down menu > update mood > update

Moods are user specific, not post specific.  So when you change your mood it will change on all posts, like changing an avatar.

Also...waffles!

How do I turn on / off my option to post status updates?

Account > Profile > Edit Profile > Switch the "Enable Status Updates?" option to desired option > Save

How does the quote function work?

The new quoting function makes it very simple to quote to multiple posts in a thread in one reply.

To quote multiple posts in a thread:

click the + icon entitled "multi quote" in the far left corner of the post.  Do this for each post you wish to include.

When you have multiple posts selected you will see a pop up in the bottom right hand corner of your screen "multi posts" click this and it will bring up a reply with all selected posts quoted.

Reply as normal.  (Please remember to snip the extraneous texts to keep things tidy.

To quote one post:

This is the same procedure as before:  Click "quote" on the post and reply. Alternatively, you can highlight the specific section of text that you want to quote and click "quote selection".

I need technical help with a problem on FJ.   What is the best way to let the tech people know about my problem?

If you can post, post your issue in the Tech Support forum.   The more details you can give the faster we can troubleshoot your problem:

Your device (PC, tablet, phone, etc.)

operating system (Windows 7, OSX, Android) and version

browser (Safari, Firefox, Internet Explorer, Chrome, etc.)

FJ theme (Default, Uniform, Spectrum)

Screen shots when possible/applicable

Also if you can trying the other themes and another browser to see if the problem persists is wildly helpful.  We still want to know so we can assist you, but knowing whether it's theme or browser specific is a huge starting off point and clear information makes at least one of the tech team want to shower you with muffin baskets.

If your issue is the inability to post please email helpme@freejinger.org and be sure to include your username.

Posting or emailing above will make sure your issue is seen as soon as possible by someone in the position to help you out.  Posting about it in an unrelated forum, blogging about it, having an indepth discussion with your cats have all been proven to be very ineffective ways of addressing technical problems.  PMing one tech support person means it won't be seen until they check their PMs when there could have been someone else online and willing to help.

Some topics have a Q&A format.  Why and how are they different than regular topics?

The Q&A format lends itself well to topics where people are going to submit questions* and makes it easy to track and make sure everything gets answered rather than something missed in a wall of text.

If you have a question you submit a new question.  If you have an answer you click Answer this Question and people can rate best answers.

* AMA, Tec Support, etc.

Why do I have a reputation?

Your reputation is your cumulative score for up voted/down voted posts.  Clicking on the reputation activity icon under an avatar will show the most recent reputation activity for that member.

Clicking on the "See who gave reputation" icon in the lower left hand corner of a post will show you users who up/down voted.

A down vote does not negate the need to report a post in violation of a rule/ToU.

What is my profile?  How do I edit my profile?

Think of your profile are your virtual introduction, or elevator speech, to the rest of the forum.  Its also a one stop shop for those members who want to see what you've been up to on FJ.

Items in teal are editable or optional fields.  Those in black are not.

Your profile info is populated by what you've entered in the Edit Profile Field and your activity on FJ.  (On profile screen in the upper right of cover photo and on main site in user link information > edit profile.). You can enter and much or as little optional info about yourself as you'd like.

Cover Photo:  this is the horizontal background photo behind your profile photo.  See FAQ on cover photo for instructions on how to upload and position.  Due to the configuration of the field background type images work great, as do anything which can be positioned to center in the space.

Profile Photo:  this is your avatar.  See change avatar FAQ for instructions.

How do I mark forums read?

At the top of each forum page there is the option to Mark Forum Read.  Click it.  It's that easy.

How do I report a post?  What should be reported?

How:  In all content (posts, status updates, blogs, etc.) you should use the report post link for anything which needs to be brought to the attention of the mods.  It goes without saying that on a forum with this much traffic it's completely unrealistic to expect the mods to read every post; hitting the report post link will send them a notification so they can deal with the situation.  Clicking that link will give you an optional field to send a message with your report, but that's not required.

What:  Free Jinger is a largely self-policing community, which is why it's important that everyone does their part to make sure the few rules we do have are being followed.  That means reporting when you see someone violating a rule or ToU such as doxing, opining on sexuality of minors or adult children still living at home, speculating on unnamed victims, hate speech, etc.

If a violation has been made and not yet addressed by a mod or admin then report it - it's better to get multiple reports than for everyone to assume someone else reported it and for this stuff to go unchecked.  If you aren't sure whether something is a violation or not then report it and let the mods make the call.

You can also use the reporting function to alert mods to threads they may wish to know about due to quickly escalating contentiousness as an FYI.

The reporting feature is not to tell on people who disagree with you, thread drift on a topic which bores you, swearing, or people speaking in a harsher manner than you'd like while clearly within the bounds of FJ culture.  Communication on FJ is generally pretty direct and not everyone will love that.

There wouldn't be enough time in the day to deal with reports if every disagreement or critique that wasn't delivered with a back-rub and a gentle kiss on the head were reported to the mods.  And FJ wouldn't be able to function without self-policing members and reports when warranted, so use your judgement.

What are tags? Why use tags?  Where can I tag?  How do I tag?

What:  Tags are a method of linking content to specific topics/individuals.

Why:  So you and others can pull up links to similar content by simply clicking on the tag.

Where:  When creating a blog entry, topic in a forum, or event you can insert tags.

How:  Clicking the +Tag in the Tag field will pull up a list of tag choices.  You can select one or multiple tags.  After a tag is selected you can opt to "insert prefix" which will put the tag before your content title (the default is none in regards to prefix.)

If you have a suggestion for additional tags you'd like to see please PM a member of the tech team.

How do I use spoilers when I post?

In the edit box highlight the text, image, other content you want hidden in a spoiler and click the eye icon in the toolbar.

In your posts readers will click on "show hidden content" to...show the hidden content.

Hidden content will be visible to all readers, including non-members.

How do I cancel a post?

If you started a started a post and wish to cancel without posting click the "Clear everything in editor - cannot be undone!" icon on the far right hand site of your post editor tool bar.

This will empty your content without posting.

How do I mention another user?

If you mention another member in a post in the following format @ExactUserName they will receive a notification*.  They will not receive a notification if they are mentioned without the above formatting or if the username  is shortened/abbreviated.

Typing their name in the above format will pull up an autofill field of usernames.  You can select from there (clicking on the name of the user you wish you mention), or type it yourself and if the link is correct a little window with their username/profile pic will pop-up.

If you mention another user in a forum to which they don't have access (I.e. A mention of a poster with less than 75 posts  in AYTFJ) they will not receive a notification.

*If they have elected to receive  notifications for  this feature.

How do I update/maintain my blog?

Site header > Create > Blog Entry

Enter title (required) > select any tags (optional) > create entry/upload attachments > Submit Entry

To edit go to entry > Entry Actions > Edit

To lock entry > Entry Actions > Edit (the message "this entry is locked for further comments" will show in comment section.)

How can I start a blog on Free Jinger?

·       Site header > Create > Blog

·       In the message box enter the name of your blog and a brief description > Create

·       Optional:  Add a photo to your blog header via the photo dropdown in upper right hand corner > upload photo (should add optimal size) You can go back to the drop down to reposition he photo within the field and change by removing and uploading a new photo, when desired.

What are the rules for blogging on Free Jinger?

Members can create their own blog on FJ.  Rules are the same for blogs/blog comments as for all posts on FJ.  No hate speech, no doxing,  no speculation on unnamed victims, no discussion of the sexual orientation of minors or adult children still living at home with their parents/families, self-promotion/spam, etc.  Please see ToU/Rules.

As with accounts and posts FJ Blogs are forever.  Blogs, blog posts, comments, etc. will not be deleted.  As with the other content, if there is an extraordinary circumstance you can contact an admin to discuss archiving the specific content, but there needs to be a clear and compelling reason for this to be considered (real life security issues, etc.)

One blog per member.  If you have a compelling reason you need more please contact Curious.

You can blog about any topic as long as it doesn't violate the rules or ToU.

Only FJ members have access to leave blog comments.

Members on restricted status cannot start a new blog, but may maintain their current blog.  When on restricted status moderation applies to blog entries and comments as it does to the rest of the site.

Why does my profile pic look stretched/weird/wrong?

Profile pictures should be 300 pixels high.  Width depends on your browser size so a picture will stretch to fill the space.  If you shrink your browser you can see how this works.

Curious uses a profile pic that is 2000px300px so that the entire image shows.  You can look at her profile to get an idea what this looks like.

Really you just need to play around with a picture until you find one that looks good to you or resize one that is big enough to cover your screen size when maximized.

·         When a cover photo is uploaded it may need to be respositioned so the desired part of the pic is centered in the window.

·         Select "resposition" from the drop down menu (upper right of the cover photo field)

·         Drag the pic to the desired position

Yes.  You can find total member numbers, most online, and the newest member at the bottom of the home page just above the Who's Online list.

I've been lurking forever, why can't I start a thread?

Members can start threads once they have passed the 75 post threshold.  Lurking is a great way to get to know a forum, but there are always nuances of any community that you won't really get until you begin to participate.  It's a way for new members to settle in and acclimate and hopefully get a feel for what kind of topic warrants a new post before creating them.

New members can start threads right away in the SOTDRT forum.  Mods csn them move them to the relevant forum.

AYTFJ - I heard there are forums on the board I can't access in my menu - why are you limiting my access?

Yes, there are some forums on the board which aren't visible to some people (and are never visible to non-members or members who aren't logged in.)

Are You There Free Jinger, It's Me Margaret aka AYTFJ:  This is a forum for all members who have at least 75 posts.   Content here is not submitted to search engines, but it is still the responsibility of every poster to remember that the internet is forever and amassing 75 posts isn't a high bar to clear.  Site rules prohibit copy/paste and direct quoting of posted from restricted forums.

Please remember that this is the internet and it's not rational to have an expectation of privacy on a forum with 10k + members just because the newest of which (and non-members) cannot view the content.

Other forums:  There are technical and administrative forums to which members get on a need to access basis based on their roles in admin, tech, helpmeets, etc.

*Active = logging in.  Not everyone posts a lot and so this rule was changed slightly for the quieter members of the FJ community.

Why is my email visible in my profile?

Your email is visible only to admins and yourself.  Other members can't see your email on your profile.

What are the Prayer Closet and Journey to the Heart?

Members are typically given warnings first* but it can sometimes become necessary to restrict a member's status in order to prevent repeated violations of the rules or ToU.  The two types of restricted status are the Prayer Closet (PC) and Journey to the Heart (JTTH).   Usernames if members in both groups are gray.

The Prayer Closet:  Posts made by members in the prayer closet will go into moderation and post once approved by a mod.  All posts which aren't in violation of the rules/ToU are approved as this isn't used to censor opinion.  Once approved they will post in the order in which they were originally submitted and not when they were approved.  All submitted content is moderation so including blog entries and status feeds.

Journey to the Heart:  For those who cannot follow the rules for the PC there are are additional restrictions:  cannot change avatar or location, PM other members (except for admin), start a thread, start a blog, or access AYTFJ.

When a user is on restricted status a thread will be created for them in which is accessible for only by the restricted user and admin for the purpose of discussing their situation, should they chose.  This thread is unmoderated.

There is no prescribed time limit for restricted status.  Regular member status will be restored once the situation has been resolved to the satisfaction of admin.

*whether or not to issue a warning is at the discretion of the admin.

Why can't I delete my post?

As it clearly states in the rules:

  Quote

Please remember that the internet is forever, and that includes FJ.

Posters are strongly encourages to think about what they post before submitting because posts are not deleted.  In exceptional circumstances it's possible to have posts archived and taken offline; please contact an admin regarding such requests.
