The ultimate 1st world problem...

Couple of things you need to know to factor into your advice:

  • I am not gifted at the art of home decor.  At all.
  • I hate pintrest because it won't let me look at things without signing up and I don't want to be taken hostage my yet another social media thing I don't understand.
  • In all other areas of my life I abhor clutter to such a degree I can't even tell you and will throw things out with merry abandon if not stopped, because I consider the lack of clutter to be a gift for the family*.

However - I'm a mom, a wife, and a sister....and you know what that means...

Stuffed animals, tchotchke, keepsakes given to me by people who love me and really know me.  I love these things and don't want to pack them away (think Ma Ingalls china shepherdess x eleventy) but I don't really have a place for them so they are kind of scattered throughout the house on various flat surfaces and I've never been happy with that because it's so disjointed.

For example - atop the piano I have a collection of framed pics of my kids over the years in various frames which makes me happy.  Sticking a couple of figurines in there because I have no place to put them isn't optimal.

(One would ask why we have a piano that no one has played ever...and I've now forced two different husbands to move a total of 8 times...but one won't ask that, will one?)

As dated as it would be** if it were all a cohesive collection (i.e. all Hummels or Precious Moments) I'd buy one of those curio cabinets with the glass front.  But I have such an odd assortment of things I don't think that would work - do people put disparate items in those?  I've never seen that.

For reference this is stuff like:

  • A nurse figurine we bought my mom for her graduation from nursing school when i was little
  • Precious Moments stuff from when we were married and the birth of my kids
  • Hummels from my mom/grandma
  • Hello Kitty swavorski line which my family has now decided I collect
  • Various figurines of Mary and angels mostly crystal and china
  • an inlaid music box my sister got each of us when Mom died - we all have the same in a different color and it plays a hymn she loves
  • A tiny framed Ace Frehely guitar pick caught in concert by a friend.
  • KISS figurines and ceramic display cups
  • a couple of decorative tea cups with a butterfly motif
  • several tiaras (less than 20)

That kind of thing.

Not to mention the stuffed animals.  I don't know how to display stuffed animals as an adult but the kids and husband keep buying them for me and I do think they are cute...so now I keep a couple of the smaller ones on my dresser and the big one on the bed because there is no where else to put her...and the rest in a box which I rotate out every now and again.

Is there a whimsical way to stick all of them on a shelf in the family room so they would be up and out of the way, but their cuteness not hidden in a box?

I am great at cleaning and organizing stuff like closets, pantries, storage etc....I wish I could trade one day of top to bottom house cleaning with someone good at this kind of thing to come to my house and just do this kind of thing for me.  And while they're at it move my furniture where it would look best, since I think I got that all wrong, too.

*(No, I don't know what happened to the two HUGE boxes of VHS tapes my husband insisted on moving even though we no longer have a VCR.  I'd have tossed the DVDs too if I could have gotten away with it.)

**(and I don't care - I still have and love a china cabinet and google tells me that style has been passe for years.  Well, google ins't coming to dinner so google can shove it.)

I don't hate this kind of thing but there is a reason they only show them displayed with larger and tastefully coordinated objects...I don't want to spend any money if I'll hate how they look with all different kids of smaller things in there.

Maybe a one of the cabinets with the glass front for the stuffed animals...I'll position them as if they are trying to break out and one of them can be holding up a little sign saying "help me - the mean lady locked us in and took the key!"

Coupla thoughts -- first, it seems like it might be a good idea to stop the incoming flow of stuff that needs display -- maybe explain to your family that you have enough/are decluttering?  One way to do that gently is to direct them to something ELSE that you would like, when it comes time for them to get you something -- so maybe say you're now into Hello Kitty gummies, or whatever (something consumable that won't take up display space!) or gift cards towards getting rid of your mortgage, or whatever actually fits your life.  It took me years but I was eventually able to convince my mom that just because I once told her "I like snowflakes" did not mean that I wanted EVERY.POSSIBLE.ITEM that could be made with a snowflake decoration or motif...

Second thought is a trick I learned while sharing a 400-square-foot cabin with a partner -- high shelves, maybe 12-18" from the ceiling -- great for extra storage -- both "hidden away" and "accessible" at the same time.  For a room where "decor" (o man I really wanted to write "decore" a la Erika Shupe!) doesn't matter, like perhaps a laundry room or office, those high shelves can hold boxes of stuff, essentially extra closet space.  For a "decorated" room (please note that I don't have this concept in my life, so please pardon any faux pas in referencing it) it would be great for display items that are big enough to be seen from across the room.

Of course there is the dusting, etc., to deal with if "stuff" is put in the line of sight but out of easy reach, but that's a different topic.  I'm assuming you really want these things and thus are willing to dust or whatever as needed -- otherwise I would refer back to my first thought above and encourage actual decluttering as in getting rid of stuff.  Take pictures of everything -- pictures don't take up much space, even if you print them out and put them into a physical scrapbook or photo album -- and then declutter the actual items -- sell the things that have collectible value, give to other family members, whatever.

Wow, did not mean for this to be such an essay!  Can you tell it's my focus at the moment as well?  :my_tongue:

I think a glass front cabinet would work, I personally wouldn't mind a variety of things in one in my own house. I might group like items together on the same shelves or something like that. It would keep everything on display but still kind of "put away".

Shelves are definitely a good idea too!

@church_of_dog something in what you posted rattled around in my brain about my own issue (ceramics) and shot out with - hey you have that space above the cabinets in the kitchen.  As in the cabinets in the apartment stop and are empty on top all the way to the ceiling.  I could use that for some of the boxed items for display (which would then keep it out of the cat crawl/knock off zone),  Granted this means I have to sort through it now.

I used to have that - but our cabinets go all the way to the ceilings now.  Which I've learned to love as we have high ceilings so I have tons of storage for stuff I don't use that often and not having to dust up there is awesome.

Yes, part of my favoring the high shelves is also the no-cat zone, for breakables in particular.  Although I have also envisioned making a kitty corridor up there that is designed just for them!  I guess I'll have to pick one or the other, though, lol

I think most of those items would be fine grouped together in a cabinet, as long as you maintain symmetry!  A stuffed animal to the left on this shelf, alongside a couple of figurines and maybe a few books (which you could stand something on), and then another stuffed guy on the right on a lower shelf, alongside a Hello Kitty thingy and maybe a couple of books standing upright here. Perhaps there would be room for a few family photos placed here and there in a balanced manner.  I guess you might have to purge a bit but, overall it would work because it would be your Cohesive Cabinet of Things You Don't Need/Have Been Gifted.

I hope you aren't too blown away by my obvious expertise in this area.

This is my mum's. Waaay too cluttered imho (I have offered help, in the past I even acted on it, but she starts screaming every time I say it). I doesn't look too bad though.  It's mainly china but there are other things mixed.

You can get all kinds of glass front cabinets from IKEA.  Most of their stuff is fairly inexpensive, and if you hated it you could re-purpose it or sell it.  Also maybe look into their Expedit line.  You could put similar things in each cube so they would be grouped together.  They come in all different sizes. I'm not great at this sort of thing either, but that's probably what I would do.  Good luck!

OMG, @laPapessaGiovanna, your mother's china cabinet is an identical twin of the one my grandmother had.  It must be a Southern European homemaker thing. :)  You display your good china, silver, and tchotchkes where EVERYONE can see them.

 and heaven forbids that you use  something that's stored there for serving coffee/tea/whatever every day!  Things inside there must be used twice a year at most!

It's also possible Joy was there and requested not to be photographed.

That was a dreadfully extreme reaction and yes therapy needing or she's among the 1 percent of most selfish people on earth.  Joy has PPD and is getting therapy.  I can see where she mighht not go to the funeral, but support Jill in other ways.

"Very thoughtful and intentional updates".  That's a load of bullshit.  She wanted her kitchen redone and they were willing to spend six months in a rental to have it just like Braggie wanted it.  If she'd really put thought into it, she would have arranged the kitchen so that it was more child-friendly.  She could have actually had the kitchen designed so it would be easier to prep for meals and clean up afterwards.  I see nothing like that.  It's just new knobs, distressed painting, and old furniture.   (That distressed green door is making me nuts.)  Where are the pull-outs for pan storage?  What about, you know, rounding the damn corners so your little boys aren't always cracking their skulls on the corners as they skid around the kitchen?  What about comfortable seating?  What about a pantry that's closer to the kitchen counter?  What about making the daily dinnerware easier to put away and not using shelves in the kitchen to display your mismatched bowls and cups?  And why is there a bandanna hanging right near a stove burner?

Didn't she call them "twinbies" as a portmanteau for twin babies? Those are not babies anymore and haven't been for a while. I'm probably just being BEC about this but I do wonder if they'll be babied for as long as Janessa Rodrigues is.

Yes, they will.  The girls are twinsies and the boys are twinbies.  Abbie thinks that's cute.  She mentioned in a story yesterday that she had to clean some poopy diapers so the boys are nearly four and she still isn't toilet training them.  They will stay babies for a couple more years.

More proof she has a shopping problem. She sells stuff all the time. Therefore you don’t notice how much she constantly buys.

More lies d from Braggie. She constantly complained about her concrete counter top because it was always chipping. She also complained about the paint on the cabinets chipping as well. She has been wanting to redo The Whole kitchen for awhile and a total gut job was not necessary at all. She lies as much as she breathes.

I have to add she got two new dishwashers, a new giant fridge and a new $12,000 stove/oven. I’m sure they weren’t broken by the “flood.”
