Upcoming Horror Movies - 2016

This is looking like a good year for horror flicks, per this handy guide that just came up on my Facebook newsfeed: http://www.blumhouse.com/2016/01/04/blumhouse-coms-10-most-anticipated-horror-movies-of-2016/.

The most promising ones for me are:

The Boy -- You can rarely go wrong with some Uncanny Valley shizz, and this mannequin certainly fills the bill. If that's not enough to interest you, there's also Lauren Cohen of The Walking Dead fame.

Pride and Prejudice and Zombies -- On the one hand, I want to say, "Isn't the zombie fad about played out for this cycle?" Zombies were hugely en vogue after the initial George Romero popularizing of the genre in the 70s and 80s, and with the various rip-offs like the Return of the Living Dead series. Then there was a bit of a lull and then the resurgence in the last 10 or so years.

On the other hand, I have to admit that I do love me some zombies (the original Romero Night of the Living Dead was one of my earliest forays into horror and got me hooked on the genre), as well as a good mash-up. Plus, this just looks like it could be a ripping good, campy, fun time. And check out these bomb-ass Regency-era ass-kicking wimmenz in the trailer (at about 1:00), and I love the quotes:

"My daughters are trained for battle, sir...*not* for the kitchen." (Ha! Take *that* Doug Phillips (who is a tool) and Botkinettes! It would be cool to have this twist on their next be-costumed spectacle.)

and

"A woman must have a thorough knowledge of singing, dancing, and the art of war.":

[Ooops. I didn't know it would be this big.  That'swhatshesaid]

The Witch -- If you've seen the trailer for this...'nuff said. Looks absolutely terrifying. Here's the trailer for your viewing pleasure if you haven't seen it or know nothing about this film. Word to the wise: Don't watch it right before you go to bed: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iQXmlf3Sefg

(That creepy ass goat, though...)

Green Room -- Sir Patrick Stewart? Say. No. More.

Spoiler

Green-Room-1200x800.thumb.jpg.03d3569780

The Conjuring 2 -- Part 1 had some genuinely creepy moments, so hopefully this one will follow suit. Admittedly, though, Part 1 did have its problems in, e.g., its treatment of witchcraft.

Lights Out -- I've watched the short several times, and it is absolutely, skin-crawlingly terrifying. I'm really looking forward to this one. If you haven't caught it, here's a link to the short: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FUQhNGEu2KA

This is another one you probably don't want to watch close to bedtime, if you are at all susceptible to this kind of thing.

Happy horror!

I'm so excited about movies that came out in lateish 2015 and are coming in 2016.  The last few years horror has been nothing more than soft core snuff films, IMO (hostel, saw, turistas, etc).

It looks like there are some good old scary movies coming out or recently came out.  We don't go to the theater very often usually, but 2016 looks like that may change a little bit.

I'm waiting for, I think it's called, The Visit to come out on one of the movie channels or on demand.   I know it's M. Night Shamalamadingdong, so it will either be pretty good or suck hardcore.   I still want to see it though.

I've heard The Visit is extremely predictable and the horror parts are like a comedy and the comedy parts are more like horror. The review I watched said that they think the reason people have received it well is because they have such low expectations for M. Night. That's probably true.

I generally love the found footage genre because imo some of the most effective horror movies of the last 15 years or so have been from that genre. Examples would include REC, V/C/R 1 and 2, Noroi and a lot of people would probably cite The Blair Witch Project and Paranormal Activity, although I am ambivalent about TBWP except for the last 15 minutes and I just don't think Paranormal Activity was effective as a horror film.
It also produces some of the worst horror movies, like Chernobyl Diaries, the remake of REC, V/H/S: Viral ect. So, they're usually entertaining whether they're good or bad, at least.

I've seen some horror movies over the last year that I liked, but I just don't find movies frightening/disturbing any more. I wish I did. Everyone said how amazing The Conjuring was and I honestly didn't find a single moment of it scary or disturbing. I'm not really big on the demon/possession genre, but I went into it really wanting to like it.

I'm tired of torture porn too, but there's definitely been a trend in horror to show less. People are beginning to remember that sometimes leaving things to the imagination is far more horrifying than showing every explicit detail. Some good horror is very graphic (such as Audition), but there's a clear line between graphic horror and torture porn.

These days I mostly look to indies to get my horror fill. There's a film called Sociopathia that I'm looking forward to.

I adore the zombie genre, but I can't get into Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, despite having read Pride and Prejudice, and also Pride and Prejudice and Zombies (although I read that when it first came out so I don't remember it that well). I don't think the genre is played out, but I do think that for a zombie film to be good these days it either has to go back to basics or have a different take that makes it unique.

Lights Out was interesting, it was well done for such a low budget short. Speaking of indie horror films, there's a horror-comedy you can watch on youtube called 100 Bloody Acres that is a very fun Aussie take on the slasher genre: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xyJZnABv0a8

I don't like the shaky camera effect in TBWP so I've never watched the whole thing.  Somehow I managed to watch the entire 2nd one though.  I wasn't overly impressed.

Paranormal Activity is SO FUCKING BORING.   Watching people sleep for 1/2 the movie for the couple moments where they move around while asleep.  YAWN.    I did like the ending of the first one though.

I haven't seen REC or V/H/S, but I've heard they were good.  IIRC, Quarentine is a remake of one of those.   I caught that when it was on some cable channel (so it was probably edited for all audiences type of thing).   I thought it was...ok.  I haven't had the desire to watch it on a movie channel to see if it's better without commercials.

I heard so many great things about It Follows, so I actually paid to watch it on amazon when it first was released to digital and it was SO disappointing, IMO.

I have liked some of M Night's stuff even though it's predictable, so I will give the Visit a go once it hits HBO/Showtime/etc.

Have you seen The babadook @Vex  That one is highly rated and I thought it was pretty good.  I also watched Creep (there are several movies by that name, but the one I watched was the "found footage" one where a photographer agrees to take pictures for a guy for a day) and thought it was pretty good.

I have never read Pride and Prejudice so I'm not sure how I feel about P&P vs Zombies.   I'll watch it when it hits the movie channels, I'm sure.    I sorta liked Abraham Lincoln vs Vampires.

I am a big fan of cheesy horror movies, as well.   I love 8-legged freaks, for example.

I've tried to watch Creep, but I've had issues with the download so I haven't gotten around to it. I'm looking forward to seeing it, though. I've heard really good things about The Babadook and I really should watch it.

It sounds like we have fairly similar opinions on a lot of films. I thought Paranormal Activity was SO boring and I was disappointed by It Follows. Hell, Robert Englund himself was talking about it at the comic-con I went to last year and he was excited about it and to me recommendations don't come much higher than that, so when I saw it I was expecting a lot and the it was kind of like 'Oh... okay'. I know the message isn't supposed to be 'sex is bad', but it did kind of feel that way to me.

I actually enjoyed Abraham Lincoln vs Zombies a lot, I love cheesy horror - but PaPwZ just doesn't do it for me for some reason. I'll still probably watch.

I don't like shaky-cam either. I have a pretty decent tolerance for it, but some films (like Cloverfield) are unwatchable for me because of it. Quarantine was terrible and nowhere near as good as the original, like so many western remakes of horror from countries where English isn't the first language. God forbid we read subtitles and all that.

I have heard mixed reviews on The Visit. I'll probably still see it, though, because I pretty much watch every big-name horror flick (and a lot of B - Z level ones, too, LOL!) that come out. :)

I love me some found footage flicks. I agree, though, that the re-makes of the REC movies were pretty much shite. As you mention above, there's no real need. It seems like it's just to make things "American" or to avoid having to read subtitles.

So, for example, while I love Chloe Grace Mortez as an actress, there was absofuckinglutely *zero* need to re-make Let the Right One In. It was damned near a shot-for-shot of the Swedish version, so didn't bring anything interpretively unique to the table.

I've been scared to watch Audition, because I've heard it's really gory. Maybe I'll have to get over that and take the plunge. Usually J-horror is quite a bit less graphic (like with the Ringu and Ju-On series).

I did enjoy Paranormal Activity 2 and 3 (I haven't seen 1 yet), and even liked The Marked Ones, mostly because I get so damned sick of everything in movies being All White, All Affluent, All the Time. For example, the affluent white people in their huge ass houses 24/7, so the fact that The Marked Ones followed lower socio-economic Latinos in a downmarket Los Angeles area was quite appealing to me.

I've heard with V/H/S it's hit or miss. I've steered clear for now just because I've heard there's a lot of gratuitous nudity and gore, which I'm getting tired of as hallmarks of the horror genre (especially the nudity--I'm not a prude, but usually there's just no real narrative reason for their to be tits and ass everything you turn around--and very rarely any of the male variety).

I might be willing to watch it and fast forward to the good segments (I've heard the Ti West and a couple others are pretty good).

And speaking of Ti West, I *really* enjoyed The House of the Devil and The Innkeepers. There was a sequence in The Innkeepers, in particular, that creed the crap out of my 16-year-old daughter.

If you guys like cheesy horror flicks, try Cockneys Vs. Zombies (*hilarious*), and Grabbers.

My friend watch The Visit and said it was AWFUL :(   I will probably still watch it, but I'm going to wait for it on free on demand rather than pay to see it now, as a result.

I will watch almost any horror film that isn't the murder porn/soft core snuff type.  I wish places that stream would offer the first one in a series if they are going to offer then 2nd, 3rd, etc.    A lot of times I want to watch something, but haven't seen the first one yet and I don't want to try watching the sequels without watching the first one.  Sometimes it doesn't really matter, but sometimes it's integral.

Like with Insidious (one of my favorites), you can watch the 3rd one without watching the first 2, but you can't watch 2 without watching 1.

I know a lot of people didn't like the Conjuring, but I really did.  I suppose that might be, in part, because I like many of the actors/actresses in it.   I'm really looking forward to the Conjuring 2.

I admit I don't like subtitles, but that is because I'm usually doing something else what watching movies and also because my eyesight is bad even with my glasses, so it's easy for me to miss something important when trying to read subtitles.

I have watched Ju-on, but I've seen the Grudge a ton of times, so I knew what was generally going on.  If I missed a bit of text it didn't effect the film for me.

Some of my favorite movies are the ones they show on Syfy.  Ice Spiders is a particular favorite.  Any kind of cheesy movie  like that.  Camel Spiders, Dinocroc, Sharktopus, Sharktopus vs whoever.   My favorite weekends are when they show a whole mess of those all day.

@Curious: Oh, man--those SyFy Original Pictures are comedy *gold*! I'll have to check out Ice Spiders, and we still haven't gotten around to watching Sharknado.

I love when Syfy does a whole day (or better yet weekend) of those movies.  Ice Spiders is one of my favorites.   Sharknado was pretty good as far as those movies go.  If you haven't see Big Ass Spider, I recommend that one, as well.

I think Joy is one of the siblings that was critical of Jill when she pulled away from the family the way she did, and they may not have much of a relationship right now. Don’t see any interaction on social media, though I know we don’t see everything. That would be a shame if that was the case, especially since Jill was there for Joy when Joy lost Annabelle.

Joy commented on the IG post. Saying she was heartbroken for them or similar. She comments occasionally, the usual “ how cute” about a kid pic or whatever.  All the married daughters seem supportive of each other.  I don’t think we can really judge off social media interaction, or even photos together. They are all busy, with lots of small children, and most of the events we get photos of are crowded with not everyone present necessarily in the picture. They may text or send each other funny memes or get together for coffee and we know nothing about it.

In Chelsea's Easter pictures George is wearing an outfit that I literally have never seen ever. It almost looks like weird plus fours. She is slowly inching him into pants I guess. Is Pentecostal fashion very big and blousy like what the older girls wear? It looks like the shape would be comfortable but the fabrics wouldn't be. I guess if you are aiming for a potato sack shape you need to add as much lace and ruffles and florals as possible to make sure that people know it is clothing.

There's no way her kids are magically not bed wetters. They've probably just learned she doesn't give a shit so they grab an older sibling or their grandmother for help. No doubt Braggie has no clue what's going on with her kids over the course of a day. She's an aggressively incompetent parent.

Braggie strikes me as the type of parent who has this idea in her head of what her children do over the course of the day while her older children and her mother would be standing there wondering what strangers she's talking about.

I saw on Reddit that Joe and Kendra are not invited though.

Also, kudos to them for doing a childfree wedding (except for their direct nieces/nephews)

Just because you've known someone for a long time, doesn't mean you like them.

It was mostly in response to the "I know that the intertwining isn't news, but it still fascinates me," comment.
