Sacred Tradition and Shiny Things
My dad wasn't the warm and fuzzy type but he loved us so much and really hated to see us unhappy. But lacking the tools to talk about feelings he took a four pronged approach whenever I was upset.
- Issue a directive on what I needed to do to fix the problem if he couldn't do it for me.
- Blame the source of my unhappiness for being an idiot
- Take me out to eat
- Buy me something shiny
Some people need more depth in their parenting, but this totally worked for me at every age. I lost my parents in my mid-twenties and the eternal child in me still really wishes someone had my back like that again. I know it's not healthy and yes I'm glad I'm competent and autonomous enough to solve my own problems...but sometimes I just don't want to.
Well, I've been going through some shit lately at work - nothing serious but enough to weigh on me and I haven't gone into detail with anyone about it because I'm handling it and I'm fine. Stressed, but fine.
One of my very intuitive sisters along with my brother in law kidnapped me today (along with Mr. Buffy) and took us out for prime rib and lobster, validated how much the people making me miserable suck, and gave me this...
shiny!
Sometimes people who love you know what you need, even when you don't know you need it.
